Digital image of a photocopy of the Agreement dated 23-8-1912 between the Australian Tramway Employees Association with the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company Limited and a supplemental agreement dated 12-8-1913. The agreement was the first between the Union and the Company which had long resisted unionism. The Victorian Branch of the ATEA was formed in November 1910. The agreement was the result of an Arbitration hearing before the Commonwealth Conciliation Commission. Frank Brennan & Rundle represented the Union and Louis Waxman the Company. The agreement covers wages for all the Companies employees, working days, rostered days off, travelling time, meal breaks, rosters, Sunday work, exchange of shifts, public holiday rates, training of students, accident reports, ability to wear their union badge on their watch chains, disputes re revenue, trackmen, ropemen, the establishment of a Board of Reference, dispute resolution, breach of the agreement and expiry - 30 June 1916, the day the Company Franchise ended. The supplemental agreement - has a long introduction to the dispute regarding workers being represented on the grounds of alleged misconduct. Notes the use of the company's private (detective) staff - known as spotters. The wearing of union badges was the cause of a large General Strike by tramway men and others during 1912 in Brisbane. Compiled by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. head office, to record the various check tickets issued at Car Houses or depots from 23/12/1898 to 1914. Has an index at the front and for each car house gives a sample of the check ticket, the date of order, individual numbers, number of tickets, total numbers and advertisements on the rear. Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. Ltd Rules and Regulations by which all operational staff were to abide by. Provides separate sections of rules for Gripmen and Conductors, with Special rules for both roles, collection of fares and use of Bell Punch, transfer and check tickets, Collectors (Conductors acting as collectors on the dummy or grip car), signalmen and shunters. Printed by Sands & McDougall. Date of issue has been damaged by silverfish - Mr H A Wilcox was appointed Secretary in 1909, becoming General Manager in the Tramway Board which succeeded the private company in 1916. Rule 76, page 21 allows for the wearing of the Australian Tramway Employees Association union badge. The Union was recognised by the Company in August 1912 and the wearing of Union badges on watch chains was permitted. A possible date for the document is 1912. Brass door roller from a former Melbourne cable car trailer - numbered 2 222 - probably No. 2 end of trailer No. 222. Consists of a large cast section for attachment to the top of the door, roller wheel and axle. Cable trams commenced in 1885 and by 1891 there were 350 sets. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses. The City of Melbourne issued a License or Licence for Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) drivers (gripmen) or conductors under their Hackney Carriage by-law No. 110. The cost was 5/- or five schillings. This practice ceased during 1917. 1 - License No. 179, was issued to George A Barrett of Port Melbourne who was a tram conductor on the 16/1/1914. Photograph shows the device used to send a "telegraph" signal to the winding or engine house. They were positioned along the track and enabled the tram crew or a cable tram worker to send a signal about the cable. The crew member would set the pointer and depress the trigger. This sent the signal which was recorded on a telegraph tape, indicating the signal and the location of an incident. Installed by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co.
