Louisa Mann was appointed Matron of the Alfred Hospital Melbourne in June 1912 at the age of 45. Miss Mann had trained at the Melbourne Hospital, graduating in 1903. Miss Mann had been the second choice when Laura Pratt was appointed matron in March 1912. When Miss Pratt resigned due to ill health two months later, the position of matron was offered to Miss Mann. In 1880, the Board of Management of the Alfred Hospital voted to establish a training School for nurses based on the principals laid down by Florence Nightingale. The inaugural lecture was delivered on 1st December 1880 by the Chairman of the Medical Staff, Dr Johnn Blair. In 1881, three pupils and six nurses, including the matron, Mrs. Henrietta Strong qualified for certificates of nursing competency. As part of the School of Nursing Centenary celebrations, this oration was given on Monday 27th July 1981. The oration 'Nursing in the21st century' was delivered by Professor Baroness Jean McFarlane of Llandaff. Other members of the official party were Sir Henry Winnneke [Governor of Victoria], who unveiled a memorial plaque. Mrs Hallenstein's Granddaughter Jane Helena Walters nee Shannon trainee of Alfred Hospital 1948-1951 presented the box to the nursing achieves with a hand written letter of explanation on 28/04/2011. Paper card insert is signed by Louisa Mann who was matron from 1912-1928.Item is significant as it was presented from Louisa Mann. Printout of powerpoint presentation given by Helen Hamilton, President of the Alfred Hospital Nurses League, at the Alfred Hospital August 15, 2018, under the auspices of the Alfred Hospital heritage Committee. Haldan Turriff was the first matron of the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Haldane was one of a group of nurses under the leadership of Lucy Osburn who had arrived in Sydney in 1868, following a request from Henry Parkes (at the time Colonial Secretary of NSW) to Florence Nightingale for help to improve the standard of nursing in Sydney. Two weeks after their arrival their was an assasination attemt on HRH Prince Alfred. Haldane was one of two nurses chosen to care for him. The Alfred Hosital, which opened in 1871, was named after him and Haldane Turiff became the first matron.
