W.B Withers wrote of Sutton: "In the realm of science Ballarat has become of world-wide fame through the inventions by Mr Henry Sutton, a native of the place. His skill and acquirements in electricity, telegraphy, telephony, photography and also in astronomical and microscopal studies have won for him a high position as a practical scientist, and the credit is the greater as he is a self-taught student … Mr Sutton, before he was fourteen years old, had read every book on science to be found in the library of the Ballarat Mechanics' Institute." The Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) was fortunate to have this genius appointed as the lecturer-in-charge of the new Electricity and Magnetism department from 23 April 1883. Although Henry Sutton submitted his resignation to the Council of SMB in October 1884 it was resolved that he be asked to reconsider, and Mr Sutton continued to teach at SMB until the end of 1886. He was a prominent member of the Camera Club, and many of the other SMB clubs. Sutton had an active and fertile brain, and was known for his inventions, especially his work on the telephone, telephane and carbon lamps. Sutton presented a vacuum pump, worked by water jet, for use in SMB Chemistry classes. His report of 1883 states: ‘A telephonic circuit has been laid down between the [SMB] engine-house and workshops, to be used for experimental purposes.’ Henry Sutton spent much thought on artificial flight, and made some interesting experimental studies with flying birds. The storage of electricty also attracted his attention, and, after much work and thought evolved the Sutton Secondary Battery. A paper on this battery was presented to the Royal Society, London, and was afterwards printed in the 'Transactions'. Henry Sutton is listed on the Federation University Honour Roll at https://www.federation.edu.au/curator/honour-roll/honourroll_sutton.shtmlA crude scientific instrument that measures amps, with a timber base and frame. Terminal posts and sliders contacts are positioned on top of the base, with flex attached. Henry Sutton lectured at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in Electricty and Magnestism between 1883 and 1886. In 1883 Sutton reported: ‘…The class has been unfortunately situated, by having to wait for instruments of precision ordered from England, but which have not come to hand. Broinowski was commisioned by the Department of Public Instruction in New South Wales to supply them with pictures of Australian birds which he published in 6 volumes from 1887 - 1891. Gracius Broinowski was born in Poland in 1837. To avoid conscription with the Russian army he roamed Europe in poverty,his possessions having been stolen earlier in Germany. Hearing tales of the Australian gold fields, he borderd the 'Windjammer' bound for Victoria as a deckhand. Broinowski swam ashore at Portland, Victoria in 1857 age twenty. For seven years he walked from one rural settlement to another working as a shepherd, stockman and independent farmer. In 1864 Bronoiwski married in Melbourne and found work with Hamel & Ferguson (print sellers and publishers). 'The Birds of Australia' was finalised in 1891 with 303 full page illustrations lithographed in colour with notes on over 700 species. Limited to 1000 copies the edition sold out quickly. Bronowski died in 1913 at Mosmon NSW, aged 76. He was survived by his wife, a daughter and 6 sons.Green hard cover book, black leather spine and corners. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first School of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. 22 page booklet titles 'The Ballarat School of Mines: A Statement of the Objects and Resources of the School.' The Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913 under the jurisdiction of the Ballarat School of Mines. The first Principal was Albert W. Steane. The Ballarat Ironworkers' and Polytechnic Association was at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1907 J.W. Gregory Professor of Geology at Glasgow University, Late Director of the geological Survey of Victoria and Professor of Geology at Melbourne University. W. Dickson was Secretary for Mines and Donald McLeod was the Minister of Mines. in 1894 Ernest Lidgey was the Assistant Geological Surveyor for the Victorian Department of Mines. A.W. Howitt was Secretary for Mines and Henry Foster was the Minister of Mines. Charcoal hard covered report on the Ballarat East Goldfield. Edith CURNOW (1913–2003) Ballarat | Australia Edith Gertrude Curnow undertook Industrial Art teacher training at the Ballarat Technical Art School, with a five-year Senior Technical Scholarship, between 1926 and 1931. She taught for a time before marrying compositor James Lawn in 1937. She reportedly continued to teach at the Ballarat Technical Art School as Edith Lawn. She retired in 1972 at which time she was the Lecturer in Charge of Craft Edith Lawn was a member of inaugural Ballarat School of Mines Old Girls Association, and served as first Press Correspondent. Her daughter, Valda Lawn (later D'Angri) also attended and taught at the School. One of the subjects Curnow studied was Historic Ornament. This subject spanned time and space to inform and inspire designers. Students studied the influences of history, geography, culture and climate on ornamental aesthetics, including the tools, materials and methods applied to decorative objects, interior design and architecture.Two books containing student notes and drawing relating to courses at the Ballarat techncial Art School in 1931. The Donation Book relates to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum which opened in 1872. Very few of these items are still held by Federation University. This book was discovered beneath the floor of a former Ballarat School of Mines office during renovations in 1970. It appears to have been placed there in safe storage, then forgotten for decades. Both State Library of Victoria and Monash University have a full run of all 10 volumes of Recueil de planches sur les sciences, les arts libereaux, et les arts mechaniques avec leur explication. This copy is the sixth volume, and contains 294 pages. School of Mines stamps are dated 1870. Etchings by Benard Fecit and Louis-Jacques Goussier (1722-99). Goussier was a French illustrator and encyclopedist.Large hard covered book of 294 beautifully printed plates on handmade paper. Each plate has descriptions written in French. Along with animals and natural history the images also include mining, metallurgy and mineralogy. Rebound in 1987 with green cloth and leather spine and corners. Gold lettering on the spine. Solid wooden box with rope handles was used to move library books from the Library at Ballarat School of Mines to the E J Barker Library at Mount Helen Campus. The Mount Helen Campus Library was opened in 1973. At that time it was Ballarat Institiute of Adult Education. This was the fore runner of what is now Federation University. The SMB library was in the Ballarat Gaol Building. This was demolished and the new E J Tippett Library was built on the site in 1977.Wooden book box with rope handles.Sticker with 8 on each end.
