The local photograph shows the original footbridge across the Merri River near its mouth, the Viaduct road and the Warrnambool Breakwater with the Titan crane on it. The breakwater's construction was completed in 1890, the year this photograph was taken. The Viaduct has since been filled in to prevent water from passing through the pylons, and the footbridge has been replaced. The postcard has a personal message written on the back to a Dr Scott from May. The photograph is locally significant for recording the completion of the Warrnambool Breakwater, for showing the original design of the Viaduct and for a clear view of the original footbridge across the Merri River. It is also of significance for being used by a female to send a greeting from Warrnambool to a doctor. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. This book contains poems written by Lindsay Russell. This was the pen name of Ethel Stonehouse (1883-1964) who was born in Nhill, Victoria and published verse, short stories and novels. She gained a national reputation for her novels, many of which were controversial at the time, dealing with rebellious women and they were often critical of some aspects of the Catholic Church. Her first novel, ‘Smouldering Fires’ sold 100,000 copies in Australia alone. In 1914 Ethel Stonehouse married Dr John Scott and came to live in Mortlake, Victoria. ‘The Caravan of Dreams’ was her last publication. This book is of considerable significance as a book of original poems by Lindsay Russell, an Australian author who lived in the local area (Mortlake). The book was printed at the Terang Express newspaper office in 1923. This is a soft cover book of 32 pages. It has a dark blue cover with a border at the top and bottom of the front cover and black printing. The ornate borders are repeated throughout the pages. The book contains 28 poems. This is an Irish-Australian novel written in 1922 by Doctor Gerald Baldwin (c.1868-1942). New Zealand born Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool from about 1900 to 1915. He took over the medical practice and small private hospital of Dr Thomas Scott in Banyan Street, Warrnambool. In 1915 he disposed of the hospital to Sister Ingpen who renamed it ‘Alveston’. Dr Baldwin then practised in Richmond, Melbourne. He wrote novels and plays, with his best-known work being the novel, ‘In Racing Silk’. As well as the novel, ‘Grey Town’, the Historical Society has an original program of a performance in 1914 by the Warrnambool Dramatic Society when Dr Baldwin was in Warrnambool. The program featured a play written by Dr Baldwin, ‘Father O’Flynn’, set partly in Dublin. This book is important because it is a novel written by a local doctor, Gerald Baldwin . He had considerable success with his writings in the early part of the 20th century.This is a hard cover book of 262 pages. It has a red cover with gold and black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The colouring on the spine is very much faded. This is a novel written by Ethel Patricia Stonehouse under the name of Lindsay Russell. She was born in Nhill in 1883 and was educated at Charlton State School. From 1894 on she wrote verse and short stories and worked as a journalist in Melbourne. She published her first novel in Melbourne in 1912 and lived for a time in London where she met Dr John Scott whom she married in 1914. After the First World War she came to live at Mortlake and her novel writing ceased. Most of her novels are about women rebelling –against Catholicism, Calvinism, the English class system and the restraints of marriage. Her railings against the Catholic Church and the oppression of women caused her to be a controversial figure, especially in Mortlake, but she was a popular novelist with one of her books, ‘Smouldering Fires’, selling over 100,000 copies in Australia alone. She died in 1964. No details on the inscription or the recipient of the book, ‘Isie’ have been found. The name, ‘Glasgow’ suggests that the book at some stage was connected with the Glasgow family of Wangoom. They were important local dairy farmers and cheese makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This book is of great interest because it was written by an Australian woman and one who lived for many years in Mortlake, a town close to Warrnambool. The connection with the Glasgow family is also of interest. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages. The book has a dark blue cover with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and some gold scroll work on the front cover. The book has a Prologue and 22 chapters and contains advertisements at the front and the back of the book for other books published by Ward, Lock & Co. There is a black and white illustration at the front of the book with a piece of tissue paper covering it. The page at the front of the book that contains an inscription is detached. The inscription and another annotation are written in black ink. The original inscription in this Bible is interesting but no information has been found on Mary MacLeod or Hazel O’Moore-Skelly except to note that Eleanor Hazel Cameron, nee O’Moore-Skelly, (1914 -1989) is buried in the Allambie Park Cemetery, Albany. The Bible was given to Berenice Angus by Sister Ingpen of Warrnambool. The accompanying note that indicated that it came from Sister Ingpen is now missing. The later inscriptions indicate that Berenice Angus had this Bible in the early 1950s at her school in Geelong, ‘The Hermitage’. Sister Amy Ingpen (1878- 1965) was an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. She trained as a nurse and was said to be the first Victorian country nurse to qualify for the Midwifery Certificate. She initially assisted Dr Thomas Scott and later Doctor Gerald Baldwin at the ‘Alveston’ Private Hospital (corner Darling and Banyan Streets, Warrnambool). She then took sole control of the private hospital and ran this hospital for a great number of years, providing expert care for midwifery, surgical and medical cases. Berenice Angus (Berry McDade) is the daughter of Dr Roy and Gladys Angus. Dr Angus (1901-1970) came to Warrnambool in 1939 and practised at ‘Birchwood’ in Koroit Street and in later years as an ophthalmologist. This book is of interest because of its connection with Sister Ingpen, a prominent nurse in 20th century Warrnambool and the Angus family of Warrnambool. This is a black soft leather- covered Bible of 1208 pages. The cover extends over the edges of the pages. It has gold lettering on the spine and gold edging on the pages. The inside covers are black. The book has been silk bound but is now partly detached from inside the spine. Some pages are loose and have been mended with glue. Some of the pages have ink staining and the cover is worn with the top and bottom of the spine cover broken and torn. This book contains poems written by Richard Lawson and Emile Louis Meyrat when they were fellow teachers at the Warrnambool College/Academy early in the 20th century. Dr Richard Lawson (1875-1971) was born in Warrnambool, the fifth child of Thomas and Susan Lawson (shopkeepers in Timor Street). He attended primary schools in Warrnambool and Cobden and then went to Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School where he won a scholarship to attend Melbourne University. In 1899 he returned to Warrnambool and in partnership with William Oakley ran a school, the Warrnambool Academy. They were firstly established in Koroit Street and then at ‘Upton’ in Canterbury Road. They bought out the school formed by the amalgamation of Scott’s School and Stanley’s Grammar (Warrnambool College) and the school was then known as the Warrnambool College/Academy. This school closed in 1911 and Lawson became a teacher at the Warrnambool High School. He later became a lecturer at Melbourne Teachers’ College and gained a Doctorate with a thesis on literary translations. With James Elijah Lawson produced four volumes of ‘The National Grammar’ and two English Literature text books. In 1924 he became Professor of Education at the University of Otago, New Zealand. While in Warrnambool Lawson was an active sportsman, enjoying games of tennis and cricket. Emile Louis Meyrat, a South Australia born about 1880, was educated at Way College and was a teacher at Lawson’s school. He and his wife, Annie Hawkins, had a daughter, Pauline Marie Louise, born in Hawthorn in 1909, but the couple divorced in 1914. In 1912, Meyrat was in Switzerland and published a poem called ‘Eurydicean’. Meyrat dedicated his poems in ‘Poems By Two Friends’ to his father’s memory. The date of the book, ‘Poems By Two Friends’ is printed in the Preface of the book – ‘May 20, 1909, Warrnambool College’. This book is of great significance as it is an original copy of the poems produced by two people, Emile Louis Meyrat and Richard Lawson, teachers at the Warrnambool College/Academy in 1909. This school is important in the history of education in Warrnambool and Richard Lawson is a key figure in this history. He also later had a distinguished career in education in both Australia and New Zealand. This book is rare and one of the few early 20th century books surviving that was written by local Warrnambool people and produced in Warrnambool. It is also of literary interest as an example of the type of poems produced by well-educated people early in the 20th century – classical and florid in style. This is a soft cover book of 100 pages. The cover is dark green with the title of the book in green print inside an ornamental pattern of lines. There is a Latin quotation inside the front page and some of the poems have French or Latin sub-titles. The book has an Index listing the 61 poems and a Preface. The book is bound with staples, glue and some stitching using string. This is a car picnic set made by the English firm of G. W. Scott and Sons who were producers of wickerwork crafts, basketry and luxury leather goods. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. The picnic set belonged to Dr Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) who was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at Melbourne University. He commenced a practice in Warrnambool in 1906 and was the Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’ at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in Warrnambool community affairs (Foundation President of Warrnmbool Rotary Club, a member of the local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee). Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, golf and bowls. He also had a motor car and this picnic set would have been used for family picnics. This picnic set is of considerable significance because: 1. It is a good example of the luxury picnic sets owned by more affluent people in the 1930s and 40s. 2. It has important local provenance as it belonged to Horace Holmes, a doctor associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This container still has some loose tea leaves inside 4. four china cups 5. two circular china dishes for jam and butter 6. four china saucers 7. one glass bottle with a silver top 8. one metal phial, silver-coloured 9. one amber-coloured glass bottle (probably not an original) 10. four nickel silver spoons 11. three metal forks 12. three white enamel plates, blue edged Numbers 10,11 and 12 are held in place by leather straps on the inside of the lid of the box 13. two loose metal straps 14. one metal kettle with a handle with cane strapping, a brass lid, a brass spout with an end chain and a metal inscription 15. Dr Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981) studied at Geelong College (1919-1922) and then Melbourne University (1929-1937). He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and served as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine. This programme belonged to Dr Ian 'Spud' MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981). It is dated 8 May 1926 and relates to a celebration dinner for a rowing regatta - when Dr Murphy was a young man. He had been the cox of two Premier rowing teams in 1921 and 1922 and also later when he was at Melbourne University. Dr Murphy retired to Clematis in 1947 intending to breed turkeys but instead responded to the community need for a GP and worked for 34 years seven days a week without assistance providing medical services throughout the district. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for his service to the health of the community.Dr Murphy was Emerald's first and much-loved GP. His work for the community over 34 years was of immense benefit to Emerald and surrounding districts. Research by O.D.H.S. suggests that the 'Oliver' who received this wallet from 'John' is likely Oliver George Scott but the identity of 'Jack' or 'John' is unknown. Oliver G Scott was born 19/2/1880, enlisted 13/9/15 after examination by Dr Kerr of Orbost, returned 7/5/19, died 3/8/1920, buried in Bairnsdale. His name is on the Orbost Roll of Honour. He was one of four Scott brothers who enlisted with three of the four dying in action. The Scott family lived at Ensay. A fifth son John was not accepted on medical grounds. Prior to enlisting, Oliver is described as a sawmiller and a single man. This is a personal item with high significance because it was owned by a man who enlisted from Orbost for World War I. Fergusson for the Murrumbeena United Church to accompany Item 2. 2/Four original copies plus a photocopy of ‘St. Giles Presbyterian Church Murrumbeena (An Outline of Sixty-five Years of Progress) 1890-1955’. The largest gold mine in the area originated from a find in 1862. The mine was closed January 20, 1915 when a fire destroyed nearly all the above ground plant. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then /​ Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p75 Beneath Mine Hill, as locals call it, runs a network of tunnels once of central importance to the fledgling township of Diamond Creek. These are relics of gold mines, which transformed early Diamond Creek.1 The tiny settlement of about 20 families soared to more than 200 because of gold. For around 50 years, from 1862, gold mining was Diamond Creek’s major source of employment. On September 7, 1854 The Argus newspaper reported a find of a four pound (1.8kg) gold nugget in Nillumbik (an early name for Diamond Creek). Exactly where, is not known.2 The largest mine in the district, the Diamond Creek Gold Mine, apparently originated from a find in 1862. It is said Joe and Dave Wilson were visiting former tailor then cook, Charles Orme, at the southern end of Fraser Street. Sitting on a stump outside the front gate on land belonging to Dr A. E. Phipps the Wilsons found a vein of gold-bearing quartz, which led to the discovery of four quartz reefs varying in width to eight inches (20cm), running north and south. A reef found at the foot of the hill opposite Challenger Street became the Union Mine. This reef was traced south to Allendale Road where a small mine began operations.3 Other smaller mines later operated as well. Dr Phipps immediately began to mine and also built the Diamond Reef Hotel as a boarding house for miners. But Charles Orme, who owned the land alongside, leased his mine to Dr Phipps probably because of insufficient funds and business skills. By mid 1865 the mine had produced 2530 ounces of gold – a 100% profit on the original outlay. Of course there were problems. When the local dam dried up a Blake pump was installed to draw water from the creek. The Union Mine operated under the Diamond Creek Gold Mine management except when disputes sometimes resulted in separate management. However disagreements had to be resolved as the Union Mine depended on Diamond Creek Gold Mine pumps to remove underground water from common reefs. In 1912 the main shaft of about 380 yards (350m) employed 200 men recovering an average of 5000 ounces (141.7kg) of gold a year. But not everyone did well out of gold. Records of failed mining companies in the Victorian Public Record Office, reveal that owner Dr Phipps leased his Right to others. Companies came and went over the next 40 years, most sponsored by Melbourne businessmen who sold shares to gullible locals and then became insolvent. Although there were some good profits, financial returns were haphazard until 1905. Some local residents, who were share holders in short- term companies, became well-known names in modern Diamond Creek such as Scott, Haley, Butler, Alder, Ryan, Wadeson, Reeves, Alston, Paul and Edwards. Gold mining was brought to a disastrous end on January 20, 1915 at 3 pm, when fire destroyed nearly all the above-ground plant. Fortunately no lives were lost. But reopening the mine was almost impossible because of the increasing depth of water in the main shaft. The closed mine destroyed the livelihood of 200 families and the debris took many years to clear.4 In 1946 the Diamond Creek Gold Mine was reopened by the Golden Hind Mining Company, but money ran out before the 600 feet (182.8m) or so of water could be removed. Gold remains in the mine but enormous capital would be needed to buy the land, equipment and to remove the water. Today 12 known sealed shafts along the ridge of the hills on private property extend west for around one kilometre from the corner of Fraser and Haley Streets, crossing Norma and Fyffe to Dering Streets. As recently as 1987, heavy rains revealed a former Union Mine shaft in the Georgiadis family Fyffe Street back yard.5 Allendale Mine, south of Allendale Road, is still open and one of the Union Mine’s main drives (horizontal excavation) remains unsealed, on the Creek Reserve.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century.
