The old Loco shed was built in 1864, as part of Echuca's rail extension, to service both passengers and goods but mainly wool, from the Riverina to Melbourne.The coming of the railway had a significant impact on Echuca and the transportation of produce, people and goods between Melbourne and the Riverina. The extension of the rail line from Bendigo began in 1862 and the final rail was laid in 1864. The Echuca line went into service immediately. The trains average speed was 20-25miles/hour double the pace of the Cobb & Co coaches. P.S Rodney with barges Horace & Nelson laden with wool bales bought into the Port to be unloaded onto rail trucks to go to markets in Melbourne. c.1890 Paddlesteamers travelled the river systems to bring wool from out- lying properties into the Port of Echuca to be transported by rail to Melbourne. Metal stencils were predominately used in the late 1800s to mark wool bales with sheep station identifiers. This stencil is a good example of the types of hand-marking that took place in the industrial landscape of Echuca, where bales were transported from nearby stations to places around Australia using the barge system that the Port has captured in its exhibition precinct to date.This item is in excellent condition and adds to the interpretative capacity of the Port Echuca collection. The log winch is a rare and unusual item of considerable interest in the context of the Echuca and Murray River Red Gum industry The winch is of historical significance for its association with the Evans Sawmill from early to mid-twentieth century, It helps demonstrate the role of the industry in the exploitation of the Murray River red gum timber, the process of converting the forests to a saleable commodity and the relationship between the industry the river Echuca township and the transport facilities of the wharf, paddlesteamers and the railway,The log winch is a rare and unusual item of considerable interest in the context of the Echuca and Murray River Red Gum industry, and the transport industry of Victoria,The structure is composed of red gum timber with four main posts with diagonal braces supporting a cog system and winch cable on the drive shaft at the top of the structure There is a platform on one side of the structure to enable the operator to reach the operating levers. There was also a rod control to regulate the winch engine and boiler.

This photograph shows three men opening a lock, manually using a lock capstan. The men are fit and strong. The river behind them appears to be very high. Not sure what the era is, but is obviously before looks were mechanised. There are 3 horses hitched to a wagon and behind there looks like a large consignment of wool bales. There appears to be women at the side of the punt (1 with an umbrella up). There was a painting of this scene by J. C. Armytage around 1857.This is a very good example of the cargo, people, produce and animals, that were using the punt to cross the Murray river in the late 1800s. This is a photograph of three men in a heavily laden boat. The boat is tied up to a stick inserted into the bank. There is a black cocker spaniel dog also in the boat. The man in the middle back is believed to be John Trestrail Freeman. The card has been addressed to his wife. Dolly Freeman née Dolly Dean. The other two men , Bot and Paddy cannot be identified. The men are obviously travelling up the river. There is a motor on the back of the boat. The luggage includes a Gladstone bag, suit cases and boxes, indicating they have been travelling a long distance.This photograph is significant because it shows the type of transport available in the 1920's. Also it shows the conditions the three men travelled in. The boat was small, heavily laden with a simple motor. River traffic in 1920 would have been sparse. The iron bridge was completed in 1878 and was used by the Deniliquin and Moama Railway company for goods trains only - it was another year before passengers were included in the transport service. On 4 March 1879 citizens of Echuca and Moama stormed the bridge, opened the gates and declared it open for their use.At the turn of the century the railway line carried produce from southern New South Wales & the Riverina to Melbourne, with goods trains being a very important mode to transport. When the bridge was being constructed, six workmen were killed and another maimed when a pile on the Moama bank collapsed. After the storming of the bridge by local people in March 1879 it was declared open for use of local residents traveling between the towns of Echuca and Moama. The barge 'Ada' was built in Echuca in 1899. It was 33 metres in length and 6.9 metres wide and was made from timber and iron. It's design was unique as it was half-timber, and half-iron- the iron featured above the water line to prevent the wool bales from getting wet. The 'Ada' was used to carry wool from sheep stations on the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers down to Echuca Wharf for distribution around the world. The Permewan Wright, Murray Shipping Company, owned the 'Ada' and in the1930s the barge was sold to the Evans family who used it to transport timber to it's Echuca sawmill. The 'Ada' was purchased by the Port of Echuca in 1974 and is seen here on the Moama slipway undergoing restoration for Port of Echuca in 1979 to 1980. The remains of the 'Ada' still lie on the banks of the Moama slipway but it has fallen into near complete disrepair.The barge 'Ada' is very significant due to the uniqueness of her design. The hull is timber, up to the water line, then iron from the water line up to protect the bales of wool bales that it transports from water damage. The P.S Pevensey, within the Port of Echuca collection, has the same design feature.The barge 'Ada' in dry dock, on a slipway with a 4 knot marine sign is next to it. The P.S Pevensey was built in 1910 in Moama by the Permewan Wright Co. Initially she was a barge, called the Mascotte, but by May 1911 she had been converted into the P.S.Pevensey. Initially the P.S.Pevensey was used as for transporting wool from the Murrumbidgee River Stations. In 1932 the P.S Pevensey carried the largest load of wool ever from the Murrumbidgee River. This record was 2600 bales of wool. She was destroyed by fire at Koraleigh Landing later in 1932, but was soon rebuilt.By 1939 she was running a regular service between Morgan and Mildura. By 1958 it was reported that she was moored above Renmark and not working. In 1967 she was sunk by vandals. In 1968 she was bought by Bill and Norm Collins. They refloated her, restored her and moored her at Mildura. The City of Echuca bought the P.S. Pevensey from the Collins Family in 1973, for $20,000. The P.S. Pevensey came to Echuca Wharf in July 1973 along with Kevin Hutchinson OA., a shipwright who stayed with the P.S. Pevensey for the rest of his life. The P.S Pevensey currently works as a Tourist paddle steamer taking cruises from the Echuca Wharf every day. (Ref. Parsons, R. "Ships of the Inland Rivers. P. 116.)This photograph is significant because it shows the wharf in 1973, being converted into a Tourist precinct. The roof of the cargo shed is being repaired. The P.S Pevensey is tied up to the wharf and looks as if it needs more repairs. The buildings in the background are still used as business venues. The Shamrock Hotel can be seen in High Street. The five span masonry arch bridge over Blind Creek was one of the major constructions on the Melbourne to Echuca Railway. It was one of the first masonry rail bridges built in Victoria. The bridge constructed from bluestone, brick and iron over the Jacksons Creek at Sunbury is an important structure on the Melbourne-Echuca rail line. The foundation stone for the bridge was laid on 13 January 1859 and the bridge opened in July 1861. Permewan Wright & Co Ltd were one of the biggest shipping agents on the Murray in the 2nd half of the 19th century. They were a cartage company established in 1856 in Geelong, who opened one of its twenty Victorian branches at Echuca in 1875. The Ada is a barge made of a composite of wood and iron. it was built at Echuca in 1899 to carry wool and cargo from station properties on the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers to the Port of Echuca . It was towed along the river by paddle steamers, mainly The PS Pevensey. The Ada could carry 350 tons of cargo and was originally owned by The Permewan and Wright, Murray Shipping Co. In the late 1930s she was bought by the Evans Brothers' Red Gum Sawmill. Two bulkheads were removed to enable the logs, to be placed inside and transported to the mills. Road transport overtook the use of the river barges, and The Ada was left abandoned on the banks of the Murray River opposite the sawmill until it was purchased by the Port of Echuca in 1974 and refloated in 1979.A barge with a composite hull of steel and timber which was built in 1898ADA signage on port and starboard bow

The train crash pictured in the photograph occurred at Sunbury between the station and the Station Street level crossing on 6th February 1952 at around 10pm. The goods train, pulled by a green locomotive, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C,Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P. J. McWhirter, the guard in the other train was injured.Over the years there have been a number of train smashes in the vicinity of Sunbury Station. It transports from the river town of Echuca and then on to Bendigo and Melbourne. The D26 is an authentic outrigger logging barge - one of four that were towed by P.S. Adelaide for 80 years of its working life. In March 1987 Council purchased the barge from Deakin Shire in South Australia for $15,000. However, its restoration was put on hold until the crew had completed work on the P.S. Enterprise, eventually beginning in 1988 using local red gum. The barge was relaunched at Echuca East on Australia Day, 1990. The D26 remains at the Port of Echuca and on special occasions can be seen being towed by the P.S. Adelaide for demonstrations. The restored D26 outrigger barge is an example of early 20th century boat building technology developed for transporting reg gum logs downstream along the Murray River, often from the Barmah Forest to the Murray River Sawmills at Echuca. It shows the resourcefulness and manual transport techniques for a timber that does not float and had to be chained to the outrigging logs laying perpendicular to the hull. These outrigger barges could be let go to float with the current downstream with a bargeman onboard. Often there was no tiller or helm, but a chain was tied to the ballast at the back to keep the barge in the centre of the river channel. This allowed the Murray River Sawmills built 4 barges to go behind the PS Adelaide, the A11, the B22, the C24 and the D26.
