These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, show the abandoned Stevens Farmhouse at 446–448 Main Road West, St Albans. The Stevens Farmhouse in St Albans was one of the earliest European farming properties in the district, dating from the 1870s–1880s, and is historically tied to the Stevens family, early settlers who farmed land north of Main Road East before suburban subdivision transformed the area. Today the old farmhouse has been demolished and the farm turned into residential housing.6943.01 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.02 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.03 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.04 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.05 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.06 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.07 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.08 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.09 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.10 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.11 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPG 6943.12 - Stevens Farmhouse 446 - 448 Main Road West St. Albans 1999 Photograph (Advocate 691).JPGmain road west, st. albans

Edward Augustus Atkyns was born in Wiltshire, England in 1840. His family emigrated to Australia in 1852. As a young man he was a keen cricketer and played at the first cricket ground in the district, located between Barkers Road and Hawthorn Grove, on the site of the future Barker railway station. Atkyns was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1861, initially working in his father’s practice. He sat as a local magistrate in both Kew and Hawthorn and acted as solicitor for several shire councils. Elected to the Hawthorn Borough Council in 1863 at the age of 23, he served in that municipality as mayor in 1866-67. By 1877, he had moved to Kew where he lived at Neama in Studley Park Road, a property later incorporated into the St Paul’s School for the Blind.Rare colour photograph of what was once a significant house in Kew.Original colour positive photograph (Kodak print) of the main house of 'Neama', colloquially known as the 'farmhouse'. The Matthews Hill area forms part of the Grand Junction Estate and Matthews Hill Precinct, one of Sunshine’s earliest residential subdivisions. - The Grand Junction Estate was first subdivided in 1886. - The southern half of what is now Matthews Hill was subdivided between 1911 and 1925. - This makes the precinct one of Sunshine’s earliest planned residential neighbourhoods, predating much of the interwar suburban expansion. The precinct stretches between Dickson Street and Matthews Street, bounded by Kingaroy Road, McKay Street, Servante Street, and the railway line. This is the original Matthew's Hill farmhouse. It was located on the North East corner of Derby Road (Now Mattrews Street) and Cornwall Road Sunshine. This is one of a few photographs of the original farmhouses in Sunshine. Rim locks were commonly used on domestic buildings throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This example formed part of the fabric of the Ziebell's Farmhouse, one of the earliest surviving German settler homes in Victoria, and provides insight into the construction methods and everyday domestic life of the Ziebell family.Painted metal rim lock with associated metal key. The rectangular lock case retains traces of its original cream-coloured paint and exhibits wear consistent with long-term use. The lock was removed from one of the doors of Ziebell's Farmhouse and is representative of the original fittings used throughout the nineteenth-century dwelling.

Painted from Gardenia Road. The extensive farm complex on the right. (Western side of Gardenia Road). was demolished in 1972 for housing development. Buildings shown are cowshed, hay barn, engine shed and stables. Painted in the late afternoon, the lengthening shadows and lowering sky, could presage the ominous fate awaiting the farm with development. The Ziebell Farm was known as “The Pines” and sadly none of the many that proliferated there remain. Today they would be equivalent to those at the cemetery, having been planted at the same time. Provenance: John Borrack CollectionThese two paintings by acclaimed Victorian artist John Borrack, a direct descendant of the Ziebell family through his mother Augusta, hold substantial artistic, historical, and familial significance for Ziebell’s Farmhouse Museum and the broader Westgarthtown narrative. Borrack, recognised as one of Australia’s leading landscape painters, is known for his sensitive, precise and atmospheric depictions of place. His professional standing and artistic skill considerably elevate the cultural value of these works. The paintings depict Ziebell’s Farmhouse and the associated outbuildings on the opposite side of Gardenia Road, capturing the rural character of the property prior to subdivision and suburban encroachment. They function as accurate visual records of the farm’s earlier setting and the self-sufficient lifestyle. Their documentary value is amplified by Borrack’s own reflections: he explained that he made the original sketches in the 1950s and later, in the 1970s, “decided to make a positive record of what the farm looked like”, developing these paintings from those earlier drawings. One work shows the farmhouse and milking shed as seen from the cemetery: the other captures the view from the front garden toward the former vegetable garden. Their provenance deepens their significance. As works created by a Ziebell descendant who consciously sought to record his family heritage, the paintings embody intergenerational memory, personal connection, and the enduring legacy of the Ziebell family within Victoria’s cultural landscape. They enrich the museum’s interpretive capacity, offering rare artistic insight into the historic farmstead and contributing meaningfully to the preservation and understanding of Westgarthtown’s heritage. This image is one of several family group portraits taken by Stevenson and McNicoll on rural properties. This property has been identified as that of John Tilley at Parwan’s Creek. The people depicted are presumably members of the Tilley family. The dwelling has since been demolished. Tilleys Road in Maddingley is probably named for this family farm.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll. The property has been identified as that of John Tilley at Parwan’s Creek. This property has since been demolished. Presumably, the photo is of members of the Tilley family. The image shows a family group of four women and one young child. It is unclear if the child is a boy or a girl, due to the custom of clothing young male children in dresses. The women are sitting or standing in two groups. To the right stands an older woman in a starched white apron, perhaps indicating that she is the housekeeper. The group on the left is of one woman standing and two women seated, one reading a newspaper or magazine. The young child reaches out one arm to her, perhaps for reassurance. The dwelling consists of two structures, one single storeyed cottage, which is perhaps the older part, and an adjoining weatherboard house with a steeply pitched roof and a prominent chimney at the front. The cottage has a shingled verandah partially covered by corrugated iron, which also covers the roof. Trees, a climbing vine and shrubs form a rather unkempt garden. On the hill rising behind the farmhouse there can be seen animals, possibly sheep, grazing. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. COPIES CAN BE OBTAINED AT ANY TIME. Painted from the home (or front) paddock which ran south to the creek. The paddock was used for the cultivation of lucerne and maize crops in the lower regions while closer to the house where Ainwick Crescent is now situated, it was a burgeoning market garden for the cultivation of all varieties of vegetables. The large pines beyond, sheltered the farmyard on the west of Gardenia Road. That complex can be partly glimpsed on the left of the painting. This is a directly painted watercolour relying on the use of white paper and transparencies to impart a feeling of morning light. The figure is the artist's mother for whom the picture was painted.
