As early as 1947 there was a request to have a swimming pool in the White Hills Botanic Gardens, and while the proposal was rejected by Council for many years, continued lobbying from the local community eventually saw it approved. The land had originally been reserved for botanic garden purposes only and it was required to be re-reserved for botanic and recreation purposes, to allow a different use. The gardens, in which the pool is situated, is one of the earliest botanic gardens in regional Victoria.Thelma Randles Collection. The Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade which was inaugurated on the 28th February 1851. This presentation photo collage was produced in 1887 by the members of the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade to honor their leader, Superintendent Lawrence Worthington (shown in the large center oval), as a farewell gift before his departure for England in 1887. Lawrence Worthington served as a Captain of the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade before being elevated to the higher rank of Superintendent. The composite image features individual oval portraits of the brigade's active volunteer members at that time, framed around a central image of their manual hose reel cart. The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. Taken in Beechworth, this photograph depicts the business of Camp Street looking towards the Ovens and Murray Benevolent Asylum. In the foreground of right hand side; there are row of buildings, on the left hand side; there are a two standing figures. The Ovens Benevolent Asylum (or the Ovens and Murray Hospital for the Aged) was constructed in 1862 on an elevated site overlooking the township of Beechworth. This Asylum was built in response to boom in population due to the discovery of Gold in Beechworth in 1852. This period also saw the development of additional administration buildings such as; the Court house, the Town Hall, and offices. The original Benevolent Asylum building was designed in an unusual Flemish Gothic Revival style. The single storey building is of red brick on a dressed granite base, and the main facade is dominated by four curved, Flemish gable ends, those at the extremities being added to the original central section in 1867. This facade incorporates paired windows of pointed Gothic form and dark brick diaperwork patterning. The adjacent J. A. Wallace Wing of 1899 was designed by Donald Fiddes as a separate building. Also constructed of red brick, Fiddes adopted a conservative approach, designing a simple domestic scale building with central projecting gable porch and flanking bull nosed verandahs. The Benevolent Asylum was renamed the Ovens Benevolent Home in 1935 and The Ovens and Murray Home in 1954. Many buildings have been added to this site, particularly since the 1960s, including a poorly sited addition to the front of the original building. Extensive internal renovations have also been made to the original buildings. This black and white photograph shows the front view of the Ovens Benevolent Home with one person sitting on a bench seat against the nearest part of the building and another person walking on the grass. This photo is estimated to have been taken in the early 1900’s when the Ovens Benevolent home would have still been fairly contemporary. According to Woods (p. 121) in the 1860’s the government spent considerable sums to establish several public buildings such as the Benevolent Asylum, the Hospital and Insane Asylum to support those in need of care in the area directly after the Indigo gold rush which had left Beechworth, a fairly remote regional and newly formed township (Gold was first discovered in Beechworth in 1852) with a number of infirm and destitute people in its wake and which due to the support and establishment of these facilities ‘made Beechworth a significant social welfare centre in Victoria’ (Woods, p. 121). Originally named the Benevolent Asylum, the building was renamed as The Ovens Benevolent Asylum in 1935 and again to The Ovens and Murray Home in 1954. It shows the civic, social welfare development that took place in the town after the peak of the gold rush which helps to establish the character of the community being built at the time and their cultural values at play. Wilson, G.H.M. Paine The following is an excerpt from the Williamstown Chronicle Friday 25 December 1891 on the disbanding of the WVFB. THE OLD FIRE BRIGADE A meeting of the late Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Mechanics Institute last Friday evening for the purpose of winding up the brigade and to receive the secretary's report. Mr L. Worthington occupied the chair, and every member present. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The chairman then called on the secretary to read the report, which was received and adopted; the receipts L141 18s 4d included a balance on hand from last year of L35 4s 6d; the expenditure, L67 9s 4d, leaving a balance of L74 9s 5d in hand. It was resolved that this amount should be divided amongst the 16 members, each receiving Is 6 3/4d for every month he had been a member up to the time the brigade was disbanded by the New Fire Board. A vote of thanks was passed to Superintendent Worthington for the kind and forbearing manner he had acted towards the members during the 9 years and 10 months he had been superintendent, and that a letter be sent expressing the deep gratitude the members had towards him. Mr Worthington has always been held in high esteem by his boys, for when leaving for the old country some years ago they would not let him go away without wishing him bon voyage and a safe return to them; they have also shown their esteem to their superintendent on other occasions. A vote of thanks was also recorded to Mr W. A. Hall, hon. sec. for the valuable services rendered to the brigade during his 8 years of service. Mr Worthington also eulogized the assistance he had received from Mr Hall; Captain Murdoch, Lieutenant Wilson and Hose officer Godwin also coming in for their share of thanks. Mr Worthington, before declaring the brigade disbanded, invited the members to the Morning Star Hotel to partake with him in a convival glass. Peculiar to remark the first meeting was held in the hotel mentioned 11 years ago. After spending a pleasant half hour, during which several toasts were proposed, the superintendent declared the brigade disbanded and that the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was a thing of the past. A photo of the finale of the 1953 demonstration. There is a large portrait of the Queen and her coat of arms above the stage with a Legacy torch suspended high above it. Junior legatees on stage in many different costumes, including beef eaters, soldiers, and in naval uniforms. Flag bearers hold Australian, UK, and Welsh flags. Some of the children hold musical instruments. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Names on the back of the photo could be those who ordered reprints.
