Mr Herbert Keck began planting his orchard c. 1886 and by 1902 had 33 acres under orchard and nursery stock. His endeavour was seen as a model orchard producing abundant crops. Allwood at Hurstbridge was named and first settled in 1837 by the Haley family. A house was built of one round of vertical slabs (red gum). Later it was the Hurst family home where Henry Hurst was shot by Burke the Bushranger on 4 October 1886. George Gray took over the property and the original home was eventually demolished. Gray, a fruit grower established an orchard and Allwood Nurseries which became a very successful business growing and exporting. This is probably around the time when this photo was taken where rows of fruit trees can be seen in the foreground. A house and associated buildings, possibly part of the nursery are behind. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Soft cover book of 40 pages with spiral wire spine. Compilation of images and descriptive timeline of the geology, geography and European settlement history of Canterbury Road.Soon after beginning at Burke Road Camberwell, Canterbury Road moves into the gentle hills of Canterbury, then on to Surrey Hills, Box Hill and Forest Hill. Further along past these three "hills" come three "monts" - Vermont, Heathmont and at its other end, Montrose, by then in the foothills of the Dandenongs. Grand homes and churches at one end, major and minor shopping centres along the 25km, factories now where farms were, big box stores, fast food outlets, train stations, resrvoir, traffic, residential stretches, modern apartment blocks, parklands, child-minding centres, sporting ovals, a sewage farm, hotels, quarries, commercial developments, plant nurseries, a golf course, bridges, memorials, Asian food shops, telecommunication towers, bushland, creeks, crossroads, traffic lights, mansions, orchards, swamps ... Delaneys Road, renamed Canterbury Road after a 19th century Victorian Governor, is a fascinating study in land use and history as suburban Melbourne has continually diversified and pushed outwards. Compiled by Heathmont History Group, Rita James, Les Prato, Betty Colbert, Jeff Leipold, Gerry Robinson (convenor).

George Knight was born in London in 1831. He qualified as an architect and practised as a civil engineer before coming to Australia with a younger brother in 1854. He was appointed Government Engineer shortly after arriving in Victoria, and supervised the construction of a railway line to Williamstown and the Sunbury section of the main railway line to Bendigo. Subsequently, he established a vineyard at Sunbury but soon sold it and moved to Bendigo, where he held the position of City Surveyor until retiring in 1886. During that period, he established nurseries, vineyards and orchards on four different sites in and around Bendigo, trading as the Knight Brothers. The Rosenberg nursery at Back Creek was established on former gold diggings - only after turning over the whole site to unearth the fertile soil and bury the clay and gravel that the miners had brought to the surface. One of the noteworthy plants at the nursery was a rose 'bush' measuring 19 metres long, 13 metres wide and 4 metres high. Another was the 'Grand Centennial' grape vine, bred from a Waltham cross, that yielded grapes measuring 35 mm long and 28 mm in diameter. It won a silver medal for the 'newest and finest grape variety raised in the colony' at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1895.Four page photocopied document, includes letter from Australian Orchid Foundation (16/10/2003) addressed to the Bendigo Historical Society re George William Knight, seeking a copy of a portrait of Knight; one page article on Knight and his role as a pioneer of orchid growing in Australia (by Gerald McCraith, AM) and a two page article titled 'George W.
