This flag is one of four in the Missions to Seamen flag collection. The flags were part of the original furnishings of the St Nicholas' Mission to Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria, which was operated by the Missions to Seamen organisation. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN: - The Missions to Seamen was an Anglican charity in Great Britain that has served the world's seafarers since 1856. Its symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today, there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the organisation began in Williamstown in 1857 as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’ in an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In 2000, the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres, such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943, a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seamen Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, and the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and resembles the Williamstown chapel. This collection of four flags is significant to the history of The Missions to Seamen organisation and the evolution of its name, flag and symbols. The flag represents the organisation and community care for the families of those who lost their lives at sea, and the support of seamen and mariners all over the world. This flag is historically significant for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for seafarers’ physical, social, and spiritual needs. The organisation originated in Bristol, England, when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The flag is also significant for its connection with the St Nicholas Missions to Seamen's chapel, Williamstown, as the original building is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The lapel badge was worn to signify membership of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. This badge was issued to honorary workers. In the earliest days this status indicated the member as a 1 guinea subscriber to The Harbour Light Guild. "Worker" members subscribed just a shilling but were required to contribute time at the Mission with hosting and facility maintenance. The form of logo indicates this badge as possibly dating back to the 1930s. Donated by Rosalea GreenwoodThe Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was instrumental in securing funds to construct the current building at 717 Flinders Street. They were also dedicated volunteers who organised many social functions and events to offer visiting seafarers an opportunity to relax, have fun and socialise away from the ship. The LHLG which became known as the harbour Lights Guild after WW2 amalgamated with the Flying Angels in the 1960s, therefore these badges are primarily of historical interest. This scrapbook holds numerous newspaper clippings recording events, functions and visits to the Seamen's Mission starting in 1896 through to 1902, although a few documents date from 1895. These dates coincide with the commencement of Mr WHC Darvall's various terms of office with the Mission from the mid 1890s. Mr Darvall's involvement with the Mission possibly stems from his arrival in Victoria in 1853 part working his passage from England as a purser on the migrant ship Asia. Original owner Nora O’Connor the donor’s adopted aunt migrated to Canada during WW2 and also worked as volunteer at the Vancouver Mission to Seamen where she met her husband Edward O’Connor who later migrated to Australia.This object is part of a sample materials that are associated to the wooden platter (Reg:601) and are about another branch of the international networks of the Mission to Seamen. In January 1929, two parties were organised in the honour of the Wellers as they left Melbourne. Reverend Weller had been appointed assistant superintendent to the headquarters of the Missions to Seamen in London. They boarded the Osterley on the 22 January. Unfortunately Mrs Weller died in 1934. Many ladies on the photograph are yet to be identified. The inside pages of this pamphlet list the many donors and subscribers who initially supported the Victorian Mission to Seamen whose first chapel was based on a floating Hulk named the Emily. The most generous 1857 donors at 20 guineas Dove and Oswald, ship owners, (also the name of the Heritage floating dock at Williamstown). The point of this pamphlet published in 1957 appears to be a reminder of longstanding support and as part of an appeal to new donors to assist with increased costs. It also compairs the donations betwwen 1857, 50 years later in 1907, and in 1957 the year of Centenary.
