Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection..1) Khaki battle dress trousers in wool fabric with pleated front. Waistband and pockets lined with light khaki cotton drill fabric. Wide waistband secured with three brown bakelite buttons Inside the waistband are six brown bakelite buttons used to secure braces. On each outer side of the waistband are two tabs with metal fasteners used to adjust the waistband. Extra buttons are sewn onto the outside of the waistband. A zipper fly is on the front of the trousers. Pockets consist of two hip with button down flaps, two lined side and one left leg cargo with button down flap. A light khaki heel protector is sewn into the hem of each trouser leg. .2) Set khaki elastic and leather braces are attached to the trousers via khaki coloured leather button attachments..1) On white calico manufacturer's label - stamped in black ink: 'YF 34". The Greek Commemorative War Medal was instituted by Royal Decree on 19.8.1947. It was awarded for service from the outbreak of war in Greece 1940 to the fall of Crete in 1941. It was also awarded to allied foreign troops who saw service as per the areas covered on the reverse of the medal. This medal was awarded to Alan Kenneth NAISMITH DCM, VX4838, 2/7th Bn. Refer Cat No 1421 for his service details.The medal itself is gilded bronze. The front of the medal in the centre is a relief of King George II of Greece. Around the outside is a laurel wreath joined at the top by a crown. The ribbon is attached by a ring suspender.The ribbon has a centre light blue stripe with a dark blue stripe each side. on the edges of the ribbon is a thin light blue stripe. The rear of the ribbon has a pin clasp The rear of the medal has a thin raised edge on the outside of the medal. The inscription in the centre is raised. The wording is in Greek except for the date. When I lobbed back I found them all pasted in these albums by my young brother Billy. He was only a kid then! Nowadays he is serving up North. Went away with the original 9th Battn. Was in the Blitz on England and served in Libya, Tobruk, Greece, Crete and Palestine and was twice knocked. It's not long since the last upheaval 1914-18 and I wonder if these boys think as we did. This jacket appears to be part of the uniform, connected to Warrnambool through its sleeve labels, and to the sea, through its anchor and chain buttons. It may have been worn in the merchant navy by a senior seaman, due to the good quality of fabric and the double-breasted design, or to life saving at sea, such as a member of the Life Saving Rescue Crew, or even a Harbour Master. This jacket has been used for display on the ketch 'Reginald M', built in 1922 in South Australia and spending the final years of its life at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from 1975-2016. The vessel spent much of its working life as a coastal trader along the south-eastern coast of Australia.This maritime jacket is significant for its connection with Warrnambool and to maritime service. Its high quality wool suggests that it was made for a senior ranking person. This jacket could have been used by a seaman in the merchant navy, which provided the essential service of transportation of goods and passengers between the ports of south-eastern Australia, including the Port of Warrnambool.Uniform jacket or coat, maritime. Heavy duty navy-coloured woollen jacket lined with light-weight woollen lining coloured blue with thin white stripe. Double-breasted front with eight buttons with the motif of anchor and chain. This lamp was the light source for the projector which was operated at Dunkeld and the wider district during the 1920's and 30's. The company which operated it was called Royal Pictures and showede their films in district halls. Owned by Claude Taylor and Reuben Schache. The projector was hand operated. Films were also shown outside on a large screen outside the Royal Mail Hotel.Metal carbon arc lamp. 6 Adjustor screws to adjust the rods to strike and hold the carbon arc. These rods allow adjustment and totation of the carbon rods which hold the arc. Brass feferrules are used for fine adjustments. Hand wheels are insulated to protect the operator. These type of tobacco pouches were used mostly by the outdoor/outback type of male. They were a product of an earlier period in time when males in the outback were considered "red back" adventurers. This pouch is more of a statement than a useful tobacco pouch. It comes from a younger time in bush folk law when the outback appearances was in fashion and before the "new age" male emerged(circa early 1900s).This tobacco pouch was admired in the outback scene and spoke of adventure and "the wild". It was a time when travel in the outback was, in the top end of Australia especially, considered unsafe and "frontier" type adventure filled environment. It was a time when colloquially speaking 'men were men', in other words tough and resourceful, and could tackle anything. This attitude was more so in isolated country areas such as in the Kiewa Valley before "the sensitive new age" male evolved. The pouch presents the early presentation of the outback male as rugged, independent and resourceful. The Kiewa Valley and the tobacco fields, especially during the construction stages of the Hydro Electricity Scheme, was the right environment for such a display.This tobacco pouch is the bottom or main containment pouch for rubbed tobacco leaf to be smoked either as "roll your own" cigarettes or in a pipe. The pouch is of crocodile skin and is light brown on one side and darker brown on the other. The pocket is fashioned with the top section curved to allow fingers to remove the top cover, see KVHS 0059(2). The pocket has fine, but strong stitching holding the bottom and sides together. It is made of relatively medium thick hide and the crocodile markings are both outside and inside. The period when kerosene was extensively used for indoor lighting was before electrical reticulation was installed in rural areas. In remote areas this was up to the mid 1900's. The kerosene lantern however was still in use, for camping and outdoor activities, well beyond this period and was eventually replaced by LPG and battery powered lighting. The transition phase to "modern" outdoor and domestic lighting lingered on the rural areas where the electrical reticulation suffered from reliable constant supply.In the Kiewa Valley, being a rural region, had reliable electrical domestic and farm supply only after the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme had been fully operational. The supply was relative to how close the homestead was to the major electricity substation. This kerosene lamp was in use during the period when it was the only reliable source of domestic night time lighting. The strength of refractive light produced by this lantern/lamp hinged upon the size of the lamp(wick and glass bowl). The small size of this lamp suggests that it was for use in a small room(children's bedroom) or as providing a light for a safe walk to the outside ablutions (toilet) area. This small kerosene lamp has an enclosed "cup" body which would have contained the kerosene fuel. The top wick holder, made from brass, has an extended enclosed spout which raises the wick approximately 20mm from the bottom of the holder. The wick holder screws into the the top of the kerosene reservoir bowl and has a wick adjustment screw (light control) at one side. The small white glass light reflector bulb nestles securely onto the wick holder and is kept snug by snap designed extending "fingers". The section between the bottom of the refractive glass "light" bowl and the top of the kerosene bowl has perforations to allow air passage to feed directly to the wick.The light refracting bulb is open at the top to allow heat and smoke from the burning wick to escape upwards.On the wick control screw "CWB BRITISH MADE"kerosene reading lamp, domestic lighting, bedside light -

Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School commenced in 1953 as the need for a secondary school grew with the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. It became the Mt Beauty High School in 1964. The blazer was worn as part of the winter uniform.Historical: Education in Mt Beauty commenced relatively late so there was less of a tradition. The decision to adopt a uniform is of interest to compare with other schools and the times.Pure wool dark green flannel pocket cut out from a Mt Beauty High School blazer. Emblem is machine stitched and has a yellow wattle decoration outside a yellow frame. Across the top of the frame in yellow 'High School", across the bottom of the frame "Mount Beauty", the 2 sides of the frame are hollow. Inside the frame is a stitched picture with a light blue sky, royal blue mountains with white peaks and a white curved path leads towards the mountains with light green 'paddocks' either side. These type of gaiters were used by soldiers who would have been attached to the Light Horse Regiments. No other men other than soldiers in the Light Horse Regiments wore these gaiters as they were part of their uniform and added protection of their lower legs when riding their horses. All levels for AIF people wore these gaiter from Privates to Officers. There seems to be several types of gaiters which were lace ups or had straps over the outside of the gaiters or some were just done up with the buckles at the top. It is unknown it the ones we have would have had straps on the outside or if this was a choice of the wearer. Towards the end of WWI many of the light horse regiments combined with each other as their numbers became less and eventually with the advancement of military weapons the use of horses in war battles become less and were not needed in consequent world wars. These gaiters are historical significant to world war one and the light horse regiments especially the 4th and 13th Regiments. Men from the the Kiewa Valley went off to war and fought with the these regiments. Henry Higginson fought with both the 4th and 13th LHR in France. Sydney Stewart fought with the 4th LHR in France and was killed in France aged 20 years of age. A few of the young men that left from Tawonga in the Kiewa Valley went into the Light Horse Regiments as they were farmers that had experience with horse. Even though the AIF said they just did not automatically put country men into the LHR . Despite not having provenance of these gaiters the fact that men from Tawonga were in the light horse regiments, and only men from the LHR wore these gaiters it would be safe to say they would have been from some one in the local area that fought in WWI who owned these. Therefore they are representative of gaiters from the LHR and have excellent interpretive capacity as KVHS have a photo of Henry Higginson wearing his uniform which clearly shows his gaiters similar to these ones.One pair of brown leather gaiters with buckle at top. This photograph of the Orbost Municipal Band was taken outside the Orbost Youth Centre in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. This was to happen a number of times, the last time being in 1961 and continuing through to the late 1970's. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Small black and white photograph of the torsos of two men dressed in light suits.
