The McCormick name in farm machinery dates back to Cyrus McCormick, who produced the first successful reaper in 1831. McCormick's company was one of the pieces that eventually became International Harvester. International renamed their new 10-20 and 15-30 tractors as McCormick-Deering in 1923. Many women in Australia sewed at home and Madame Weigel's patterns spanned nine decades, closing down in 1969. Simplicity and Butterick patterns are still made today. Simplicity was founded in 1927 in New York, Butterick is the oldest pattern company in the world, founded in 1863. One source states that Ebenezer Butterick is credited with creating the first multi-size sewing patterns in 1892. It is now been purchased by another company.15 Assorted dressmaking patterns: 11 from the 1960's and 70's, 3 vintage - Simplicity, Butterick, Style and Madame Weigel. One is a J & L Stretch Fabric Multi-Sized Family Pattern. The patterns are presented in paper packets with coloured pictures on the front depicting the items which can be made. Inside are tissue paper patterns with paper instructions. Pattern No 9196 has a yellow and white checked piece of material pinned to the front as a possible sample of the material used. The three vintage ones are Madame Weigel patterns, two for women and a child's one. Hotpoint Irons were first developed in 1903 in California. The invention was named Hotpoint, after the heating elements that converged in the iron's tip, allowing it to be used to press around buttonholes and in and around ruffles and pleats on clothing and curtains. 'Hotpoint' electric irons were first sold in Australia around 1914 and remained a popular product for many decades. From the late 1920s they were manufactured in Australia by the Australian General Electric Co. This purse is an example of what is often described as the 1930s anachronistic meeting of industrial Art Deco and the arts and crafts movement, hand crocheted silk meeting geometric frames made of the 'modern' xylonite, an early version of bakelite. The Australian Arts and Crafts movement was at this time very focused on creating a notably 'Australian' design, utilising brown earthy tones and 'natural' shapes, such as this purse's spiral drawing on straw and taffeta purses of previous decades.Circular mount purse with xylonite chain interwoven with brown crocheted chain. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. Many of the shoes, while often mass-produced, were generally constructed by skilled artisans using traditional shoe-making techniques. The shoes date from the 1890s to the 1980s. These shoes were owned, worn and donated to the collection by Dione McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. John and Emma Propert emigrated from England in 1877 and settled in New South Wales . Several of their 11 children became talented inventors, designing items ranging from kitchen utensils to coaches and later pop-up caravans. One of the most successful was Charles, who designed and built kitchenware over many decades. His earliest invention was irrigation equipment including patenting the common backyard rose sprinkler. Propert became a household name when he began making a wide range of kitchen implements for decades including flour sifters and chip cutters. By the 1970s Propert was Australia’s leading brand of kitchen and bathroom scales. By far the most successful product was a ball-driven egg beater, trademarked as the Ezy Whisk or Swift Whisk. In the days before electric beaters, the Ezy Whisk and Swift Whisk were market leaders and were exported world-wide. This item is an example of Carnival Ware glass. Carnival Ware is pressed glass to which an iridescent surface shimmer has been applied using metallic salts. The trade name of the colour is 'Marigold'. Carnival Ware was first produced in U.S.A in 1908 and production in both U.S. A. and other countries continued until the 1940s, with the 1920s being the decade when it was most popular. It was a cheaper version of a decorative item for the household as well as having a utilitarian purpose and is a collectable glass today.This vase has no known local significance but is retained as an example of an item likely to be found in many local households of the 20th century.This is an orange-coloured pressed glass vase. The grand building is Rupertswood Mansion which was the Sunbury home of the Clarke family. The foundation stone was laid29th August 1874 by Mrs. W.J. Clarke the first wife of W.J.Clarke. The property along with the Clarke family have been interwoven with Sunbury's history over the decades and remained in the Clarke family until 1922 when H.V. McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame purchased the property. The Salesian Fathers purchased it in 1927 and since that time the property has been a school. Many important events have taken place in Sunbury within the Rupertswood grounds over the years. Run as part of recruitment campaign in 1996, a decade on from the 1986 Victorian 50-day nurses strike, the longest strike in Victorian nursing history. The 1990s saw new challenges for Victorian nurses, as the state government oversaw the widespread privatisation of the public health service and industrial reforms that gave greater power to employers. This resulted in site closures and the watering down of worker rights and conditions. In the 1950s and 60s what we know as netball today was played by women and was known as basketball. No information has been found on this Warrnambool Basketball Association but it is most probable, however, that it was an early organization of men’s basketball teams. The game of basketball, founded in America, has become much more popular in Australia for both men and women in the last three or four decades with the local organization in Warrnambool known as Warrnambool Basketball Inc. and the teams Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids playing in a state-wide competition. The first three photographs of the Original Heidelberg Printing Press were probably taken circa 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The last photo was taken in 1990. The Original Heidelberg Printing Press was a single colour offset press. It was a robust and well-made lithographic printing press and was in service at the Army Svy Regt for decades. In the 1820s perforated cardboard first became available. Then, with the invention of the printing press, designs such as sentimental or religious mottos were pre-printed on the card and a Victorian craze began as it provided a simpler and cheaper method of embroidering for the masses compared to the previously far more expensive linen embroidery. Over the following decades embroidering of punched-card grew enormously in popularity and a variety of articles from Christmas decorations to birthday cards, and in this case a Neele case to celebrate Queen Victoria's golden Jubilee in 1887. The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. This is one of many items used to exhibit the skill and craftsmanship of the women in these families. These three factories clustered together and close to Albion Station provided manufacturing type of employment for several decades. All the factories have now disappeared and have been replaced by retail or service businesses. Spalding has been replaced by a Bunnings Hardware store, while the main retail outlet on the Nettlefolds site is Harvey Norman. Ironically part of the Phoenix Fireworks site is now occupied by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, as well as other small businesses including a smash repair business, and a tyre retailer.The photograph provides a historical record of some of the types of manufacturing industries that existed in Sunshine, before retail or service industries began to replace them. Many of the younger generation do not know that fireworks, screws, or some sports items were manufactured in Sunshine not so long ago, and where the factories existed.The image depicted in this photographic copy is believed to be from circa late 1920's to early 1930's, and shows the NETTLEFOLDS, SPALDING, and the PHOENIX FIREWORKS factories. These factories were located in North Sunshine on the north side of Ballarat Road near Albion Station. Nettlefolds and Spalding are on the corner of Ballarat Road and McIntyre Road, with Nettlefolds being on the west side of McIntyre Road and Spalding on the east. Phoenix Fireworks factory is composed of small huts, and is situated on the north side of Phoenix Street at the rear of the Spalding factory. The photograph also shows a row of residential houses on Garnet Street which is on the east side of the Phoenix factory. Ballarat Road is still an undivided road and on the south side is a plantation of trees that once stretched from near Albion Station to Anderson Road. June 2012 represented 50 years since the Colac to Beech Forest to Weeaproinah narrow guage railway was closed. The last goods train ran on 27 June 1962, and the last passenger excursion train on 30 June 1962. The railway was the lifeblood of the West Otways for several decades, enabling farmers and saw millers to bring into economic production the natural wealth of the region. In c.1960, when the photograph was taken on which the postcard is based, both buildings were still owned by the Victorian Government and were a functioning police station and court house. In 1900, ownership of the post office had been transferred to the new Commonwealth Government. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the police station and court house were offered for sale. They were subsequently purchased and renovated by the City of Boroondara. Saved from the ship Speke which ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The figure head of the Speke was in the shape of woman, wearing a flowing white dress with blue cuffs and collar and carrying a large bunch of daffodils. It was originally nine feet four inches long. This sculpture went missing after the event and decades later the head only was re-discovered in Mr Thompson’s garage. It was then restored by Headmaster Kevin and the senior children of Cowes State school in 1940.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights. The man in the photograph is Diogenis Cominos from the village of Lefki on Ithaca. For a number decades he was in partnership with George Paxinos in a fruit shop in Degraves Street in Melbourne's CBD, where at the time there were a variety of small businesses such as a butcher's shop, florist shop and a couple of coffee shops. Degraves Street is now renown as part of Melbourne's laneway culture and for it European style cosy cafes and coffee shops. The photo is of A.J. Lucas and his wife, Margaret (nee Wilson). Antonios J Lekatsas (Lucas) arrive in Australia in 1886 and was a founding member and of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. He was also the first president, a position he held from 1916 to 1924. He married Margaret Wilson, in 1893. Margaret was also very active in Ithacan Philanthropic Society and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary. One of the men pictured outside the South Yarra Fruit Palace is Nick Sikiotis. Located at 600 Chapel Street in South Yarra, Sikiotis established the business in 1922. He also established a shop at 345 Toorak Road, on the corner of Rockley Road which was leased to a florist. His business was one of many owned and operated by Ithacans in both the Melbourne CBD and surrounding suburbs during the first decade of the twentieth century. Caulking is a process used by shipwrights and other tradespeople to seal the gaps and cracks in boats and ships, buildings and plumbing fittings. It prevents water, air and pests from entering the through the gaps. The shipwright’s caulking box and a display of shipwright's tools are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Laurie began his career as a shipwright in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings. Laurie worked for Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for over 50 years, beginning in the early 1960s. He and a fellow shipwright inscribed their names on a wheelhouse they built in 1965; the inscription was discovered many decades later during a repair of the plumbing. Many decades later Laurie worked on the Yarra River moving barges up and down the river and was fondly given the title ‘Riverboat Man’ His interest in maritime history led him to volunteer with the Maritime Trust of Australia’s project to restore and preserve the historic WWII 1942 Corvette, the minesweeper HMAS Castlemaine, which is a sister ship to the HMAS Warrnambool J202.The shipwright’s caulking box containing caulking tools is an example of the equipment used by shipwrights in the early to mid-20th centuries. These two orange-coloured dishes are made of pressed glass to which an iridiscent surface shimmer has been added by the application of metallic salts. They are examples of Carnival Ware and the orange colour is known in the trade world as 'marigold'. Carnival Ware was first produced in 1908 as a relatively cheap version of decorative glassware in U.S.A. and this country was the main producer up to the 1940s, with the 1920s being the decade when it was most popular. Carnival Ware was also produced in other countries including Australia and the United Kingdom and is a collectable item today. These two dishes have no known local provenance and are retained as examples of vintage household items serving both a utilitarian and a decorative purpose..1 An oval shaped shallow glass dish with pressed patterns and handles at either end. The Stoney Creek dray bridge. Stoney Creek has been bridged a number of times on school road since the creek was re-routed in the early 1900s. A dray bridge was built C 1910 by local residents, which stood them in good stead for more than a decade. This bridge was replaced by a higher timber structure. David Fletcher Jones commenced his tailoring and hawking business in the 1920’s. The business expanded through the decades to become the main manufacturing employer in the city of Warrnambool. The business moved from Liebig Street around 1947 to a site in East Warrnambool which was once an old quarry. The factory which was built at “Pleasant Hill” manufactured quality clothing, initially men’s trousers, suits which expanded in later times to include ladies’ wear. A network of stores was opened throughout Australia to sell the garments. A common item linked to a significant business and personality of Warrnambool.Fletcher Jones Factory held a significant place in the economic development of the city. The donor, Brian Licence, assembled this Wool Sample Book while studying at the Gordon Institute from 1960-62. Brian studied Wool Classing and worked for a decade in this profession before moving to Melbourne which required him to change careers. The National Wool Museum accepted a donation from Brian in 2022 of several mementoes relating to his career in the wool industry. This wool sample book joins a collection of 8 others within the museum’s collection, with the oldest dating to 1870 at the time of writing in 2022. Large black bound book with ribbon for fastening containing 12 double-sided blue pages. Pages have several samples of shorn wool mounted and annotated to include information such as specific breeding, shearing faults, and geographical area. The book concludes with four pages without wool samples. Two of these pages relate to plans for a shearing shed and other industry related structures. The final two-pages relate to the anatomy of a sheep. Wool sample books were constructed by Wool Classing students at the Gordon Technical School as examples of what to look for when classing wool. The students were tasked with constructing these books with samples they retrieved themselves from several different farms and animals. The book would serve as a reference point for the wool classers throughout their years in the field, it was always on hand to refresh knowledge.
