Village was constructed in the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro ...Bogong Village was constructed in the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Employees of the SECV lived there before the town of Mt Beauty was constructed in the late 1940s. By 1997 the village was owned by Southern Hydro who didn't want a 'non-core service' and wished to sell it.The history of Bogong Village is that of a construction town that no longer has a use for its owner. However, it has an emotional significance for people in the area, especially those who worked and lived there. It is also a tourist attraction and includes the Outdoor School - Bogong Campus which was called the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre in 1992. Its history began in 1968 when the Victorian Education Department acquired the camp buildings and four houses from the SECV. Book - Reference S.E.C. History x4, Brown Power A Jubilee History of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, first published 1969
... when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme was first mooted...) with The Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. In 1946 Victorian government ...Although this book revolves around the supply of power(Electricity) from brown coal it does cover the period 1937 onwards when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme was first mooted. This area was believed to be far away from aerial bombardment should the coastal power stations be attacked by air in World War II(1939 -1945). After the war, post 1945, the demand for a continual power supply, not affected by seasonal coastal flooding was together with a lower cost of hydro electricity power the major incentive for the Victoria Government of the day to proceed (in the 1940s) with The Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. In 1946 Victorian government sought greater independence from the New South Wales black coal supplies. The significance of this book to the Kiewa Valley and its outlying regions is that it details why the development of an Alpine region was and now still is pocketed with a European flavour both in buildings and in town vegetation(trees and flowers). European (post World War II refugees) where attracted to these alpine areas not only for hard labouring positions but also for their technical skills and some street names offer a distinct European lineage rather than convict or of earlier English settler. The construction phase accommodation continued after completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme to become popular venues for an increasing winter tourism industry. This book has a brown hard cover encapsulated by a cream sleeve with brown and black print. On the front of the sleeve is an embossed circular motif with centre piece S.E.C. emblem and around this the words "50 YEARS OF SERVICE" and below this" STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION OF VICTORIA". The book contains 313 double sided pages of black print and black and white photographs. On front of paper sleeve "Brown Power A Jubilee History of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Cecil Edwards". On the second page, below the Title "Brown Power" there is a pasted, printed presentation certificate, with the S.E.C. emblem and these printed words " Presented by the Chairman and Commissioners to A.G. Gradually this village has developed into a major skiing resort during the Victorian winter. Many people who lived in Mt Beauty, Bogong Village or Falls Creek itself have either grown up snow skiing or spend their winters skiing. As a consequence Falls Creek developed a skiing community from this base and some skiers went onto represent Australia in skiing competitions and the Winter Olympic games due to their association with Falls Creek and or Mt Beauty. These skiis were used by Doug Mc Conville in the 1976 Winter Olympics. He crashed in his Olympic event. Photograph Farm Land, Mount Beauty Acreage before Golf Course, Circa 1950
... Valley Hydro Scheme altered the basic rural setting of the valley... environment before the effects of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Scheme ...This photograph is a "snap shot" in time circa 1950s detailing the rural environment before the effects of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Scheme altered the basic rural setting of the valley. The golfing fairway was being mapped out on previous grazing land, before the laying of a golf course, for use by the construction workers and auxiliary administration employees of the Victorian State Electricity Commission. This photograph details a dramatic period in time which saw an enormous change to the exclusively rural area of the Kiewa Valley region in the mid 1900s. This change presented both physical and mental challenges to the existing quiet rural inhabitants of the valley. The State of Victoria had to make adjustments to the changing demands imposed by population and industrial expansions. The development of cleaner energy supplies to a growing population has its downside ,which ever way the intrusion into the "natural" landscape is made.Black and white photograph detailing surveyor posts for construction of golf course. Land used, before establishment of the Mount Beauty Village, as farming/grazing cattle and viewed towards Mount Bogong and its Alpine ranges. The construction of the road, from Tawonga to the High Plains, was commenced in April of this year. This allowed men and heavy equipment to be transported to the work sites for the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme This photograph is important as it shows the upper Kiewa Valley as it was before the establishment of the town of Mt. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Alex was involved with many organisations in Mt Beauty and interested in history. He took many photos of events and new developments in town. He also collected individuals memoirs on life in the town.Mt Beauty's history is unique as it was built as a construction town in the late 1940s. Meter Millivolt, after 1950
... by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until... (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's ...This milli-volt meter was manufactured after 1950 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England. This milli-volt meter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was used by those electrical technicians, who were part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. An "off spin" from the Scheme was the beginning of an explosion in "human" resources into the Kiewa Valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both industrial and larger residential community. This evolution in the Kiewa Valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape(better roads and infrastructure), but also the socio-economic growth within the Valley allowing other "tourist" based industries to expand within the valley and Alpine areas. This millivolts DC meter was used in the 1950's. It is contained in a wooden box and has two coloured (red/black, positive and negative) screw tight knobs which have bake-lite connections. It also has a covered (black tin) view meter marked from zero to 10 millivolts. Underneath this and within a round bake-lite is a small adjustment screw. The top of the box is fastened onto the main structure by six brass screws. The back of the structure is fastened by eight brass screws and there are four small bake-lite rest knobs. On the face of the millivolt compartment , and at the top "TO BE USED WITH DIAL HORIZONTAL TEMP. COEF. +- .08 % PER oC. Underneath the scale "MILLIVOLTS D.C. F.G." (LEAD RESIS. .05 OHMS)" underneath and to the left "MADE IN ENGLAND BY" "EVERSHED & VIGNOLES Ltd" and to the right "No. 857842" underneath Regd.
