The entries are written in the Greek language as most of the members of then committee during the club's early were more fluent in Greek than English.The first minute book has a record of the inaugural meeting of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in October 1916 and subsequent meetings until January 1927. Through these records it is possible to gain information about the club's philanthropic objectives, its members and activities during those early decades of the twentieth century. The records also provide an insight into the settlement in Melbourne of Ithacan Greek community and the settlers' determination to succeed in their adopted country while retaining the ties with their homeland. A foolscap size bound book with a tan leather binding and green marbled cloth on the front and back covers. The four corners have been finished in tan leather. There is a white label with blue borders stuck on the top of the fron cover. The inside front and back covers have been finished with mauve, blue and white marbled paper. White cotton cloth tape is along the inner side of the back and front binding. there are 472 pages in the book.On the spine in gold on a red background: MINUTE/BOOK -

The college which opened in 1927 was renowned for its training in domestic arts. Here the girls honed their cooking and needlework skills. Up until the 1950s most young Ithacan girls were not encouraged to consider a profession or to pursue further study. Following a few years of secondary schooling many attended Emily McPherson College where they pursued domestic arts courses. -

Sia, a second generation Ithacan, was the first woman president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. Helen's parents were from the island of Kastellorizo. Sia's son Ross and Helen's daughter Chrisanthi (Cynthia) married. In the early days of Greek migration the Ithacans and the Kastellorizians were two of the largest Greeks communities in Melbourne. The children of this first wave of immigrants, such as Sia and Helen, developed close friendship through Greek school and various cultural celebrations and social connections. Travel to Australia between the He married Evgenia Raftopulos and they had two children, Loula and Spearos. Peter was the brother of Kalypso Sofianos nee Raftopoulos. Peter was secretary of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society 1938-1949 and 1953 and an Honorary Life Member.Between the world wars migrants made the long journey to Australia on steamships such as the STRAITHAIRD. Then came the ocean liners which remained the main form of transportation for immigrants to Australia until well into the 1960s. By the 1970s, the wave of post-war migration by ocean liner to Australia was largely over. The Consul of Greece, Mr. George Veis was guest of honour. President of the IPS was Peter Paxinos. The photograph of the event was published in the local Greek newspaper 'Neos Kosmos'.The 1996 debutante ball was an important event for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society to celebrate its 80th anniversary since it was established in Melbourne in 1916.A black and white newspaper photograph of a debutante set and partners photographed at the Carlton Crest Hotel. It also treasurers' reports detailing the club's finances from its establishment in 1916 to 1923.This minute book is an important record of the decisions of the Executive Committee and club's activities for more than a decade from the middle of the 1950s to the end of the 1960s. It was a period of a second wave of Ithacans migrating to Melbourne following WWII and the 1953 earthquakes on Ithaca. It is also the period during which Ithaca House, the society's clubrooms, was constructed. A foolscap size bound ledger with tan suede binding on the spine and corners with a dark green cover. Dark pink and grey marbled patterned paper is on the inside front and back covers. Four white labels have been stuck onto the front cover, two along the side and two on the cover. a red label with 'Minute Book' printed in gold is on the spine. -
