Since it was built in the 1860s the two storey brick building has had a number of commercial uses including butter and ice making, a general store, an equestrian store, an art gallery, a community Christian centre and a health studio. The photograph was taken at the intersection of Brook and Evans Streets in Sunbury. The two storey bluestone building was the Rupertswood Hotel, which was on the NE corner of the intersection and the single storey Royal Hotel building in the foreground was on the opposite corner. The Millett family originally owned both hotels. The Rupertswood Hotel was demolished in December 1974 to make way for a modern retail store. The two storey building under construction is the Royal Hotel. The larger building replaced the former single storey hotel which was built on the same site in 1861. Murray Comrie Collection. This two-storey building was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The double-storey building in this image was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is now a private residence. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. The two storey building in the photograph is the Royal Hotel. This model was part of a panorama consisting of 11 pieces designed from drawings in an 1892 almanac printed by Port Fairy Gazette The panorama was used in the Historical Society rooms in Bank St. On an extended mantel piece, before being relocate to Gipps Street. It was made by a member of the Port Fairy Historical Society Mr Allan mewkill.This model was made as a part of an eleven piece panorama of the streetscape of Port Fairy in 1892. This is an image of the original single storey Royal Hotel building which was on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets. In the 1930s the single storey structure was demolished after a fire and replaced with a double storey Art Deco red brick building, which still stands on the same site.At one stage there were four hotels in Evans Street between Station Street and Brook Street. At some stage the Millett family owned them. The new hotel was completed and opened in 1939 on the same site and still functions as a hotel today. The two storey house is 'Ardcloney. Dr. William Faulkner, formerly from Queensland, had it built for his residence in 1911. The property also included a garage, which accommodated his automobile and accommodation for his chauffeur. Owners in more recent times were Keith Campbell, who previously owned 'Willowbank' in the old Broadmeadows township and Bill Landeroo a former Victorian State MP. In 1881 Cyrus Bath Retallack purchased land now known as 1200 Mair Street Ballarat. Retallack was a successful Cornish miner and engineer. He built a two storey brick mansion between 1882 and 1883, naming the property ‘Carn Brae’ after the castle in Cornwall. Substantial grounds were established with with range of exotic trees planted, a tennis court was laid out and a stables building was erected. In 1918 the site become a campus of Queen’s GIrls’ Grammar School, then Aquinas College which was merged into the Australian Catholic University from 1973. This photograph of a two storey building now the premises of Webb J.H. & Seng Hpa, Solicitors but once "The Union Bank". Its located at 153 Main Street Stawell. Previously the first Union bank was built in c 1888 on the corner Victoria Place & Main street and designed by designed by G. C. Inskip. This is the second Union Bank the first was second from the corner of Lanzell St. in Main St. and was eventually pulled down. The 1st bank was shown in photos by C. B. Herbert. This image provides an additional later modified building view to that of the image of the original single storey building image published on back page of the 1910 MTS Annual Report. According to the Annual Report of 1915 the plans to build a residence on top ( the 2nd storey ) of the Port Melbourne building got the go ahead to commence and opened 1916. Originally designed by architect, Frederick Williams, who built the first brick Mission at Port Melbourne in the 19th C. Walter Butler was commissioned for the second storey.The Port Melbourne building in the image established in the 19th C., still survives. It was a key centre of operations for the Mission prior to the building of the Mission near Australian Wharf in 1907 and prior to the eventual opening of the current "Central Mission" in 1917. NB operations of The Port Melbourne Branch Mission were eventually transferred to the King George V memorial Building, dedicated in December 1937 but demolished in 1995. The two storey building is the Royal Hotel which is sited on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets in Sunbury's main shopping strip.The photograph was taken sometime in 1939 after it was totally rebuilt. A fire had damaged the old single storey structure, which was built on the same site c1860 shortly after Sunbury had a rail service. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. (Victorian Heritage Database, 2023)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. 'Mandalay' at 3 Molesworth Street, Kew was originally named 'Kaikoura'. Pru Sanderson's 'Kew Urban Conservation Study' (1988) describes the house as: "The first documentary evidence of this property records that William Dawson was the original owner and occupier of this substantial two-storey mansion, built at the outset of the economic depression of the 1890s. Having an initial N.A.V. of £120 4, the house was occupied by Dawson until at least 1904. This two-storeyed rendered house is Italianate in styling and is dominated by a two-storeyed loggia that spans two facades. At ground floor level it is supported on coupled cast iron colonettes and above has single colonettes that support stilted segmental arches. The house is quite typical of its time, however it bears a strong resemblance to 39 Sackville Street probably by Beswicke and Coote (q.v.), and 'Kawarau'.in Hawthorn, designed by Coote.
