The arrival of explorers Hume & Hovell in 1842 brought about the widespread clearing of land in the valleys for pastoral uses and the displacement the original inhabitants in the high country which became a boon for cattlemen due to extensive lush summer grazing for cattle. High country cattlemen built a variety of huts for shelter and storage, when driving cattle up to the plains in summer, during mustering and bringing the cattle down from the mountains before winter closed in. These same huts now provide shelter from the elements for hikers, bush walkers and skiers. Wallace’s Hut is the oldest of the Cattleman’s huts still standing in the Alpine National Park and is classified under the National Trust. Due to their age and the ravages of the elements, including bush fires, many of the huts have been destroyed, or are falling into disrepair. Groups of willing volunteers are now working to preserve as many of the huts as possible with restoration or rebuilding.The numerous cattleman’s huts of the Alpine National Park and the colourful characters who erected them represent a significant part of the history of the high country area and early cattle grazing, which has been the theme for many poets and film-makers alike. They also have a significant role in the early days of the SECV when they were used by surveyors and other workers for shelter and temporary accommodation. More recently the huts have functioned as shelter for hikers and skiers caught out in the elements and a refuge along the long trek for bush walkers. They are a popular attraction for tourists and feature prominently in much of the tourist information of the region. In the mid to late 1930’s survey outposts were established to plot the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro Electric System for the SECV in the Bogong High Plains. Before any roads were built, the old cattleman’s tracks were used with packhorses to deliver supplies, wages and mail and collect timesheets and correspondence from the workmen and dam builders living in canvas tents and at the outlying survey posts. The trip up the mountain was long and hard and dangerous for both horse and man Most of the men of the survey teams were not bush-men and were often ill equipped for the harsh weather and living conditions of bush camping, often arriving in their city clothes ready for work. The tent city at Bogong was destroyed by bush fires in 1939 after which an access road was built from Mt Beauty to transport building materials for more permanent dwellings for workmen. Pack horses continued to be used for transporting goods etc. to workers further up the mountain.Without the work of horsemen and their pack horses providing supplies and communications for outlying outposts, surveying and early planning for the Kiewa Valley Hydro Electric scheme could not have gone ahead and the dams and power stations which support the system could not have been constructed. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. In the 1830’s, European pastoralists started moving south from NSW into the Alps. In 1836, cattle grazing began around Omeo and the runs spread out into the foothills. The higher country was used for summer grazing and huts were built for shelter and storage during stock mustering. The lure of gold brought many people to the Alps from around 1850 to 1900. Bushfires destroyed the forests around Melbourne in 1939 and the boom in house-building after World War II ked to increased demand for timber from the Alps. This resulted in the building of a network of roads which helped open up access to the Alps. The early 1940’s brought the first of many workers to the Alps for the planning and construction of the Hydro-Electric Scheme. These were the pioneers and early settlers of the Kiewa Valley and provided a wealth of characters and a tapestry of stories and adventures to be handed down to future generations.These 3 posters, which were most likely produced for promotional purposes provide a glimpse into the early lives of the pioneer families of the Kiewa Valley through pictures and verse. They show their lifestyle and outline the hardships they had to endure in living and working in the Alpine region. A start on the construction of Bogong Creek race line was made at the commencement of winter in 1948. Work proceeded in the following years when work on the High Plains was not practicable. In January, 1951 the special trimming machine, the special slip form and concrete mixing and placing equipment was put into service. A shortage of cement caused some delays as well as a sudden financial recession. The race line was completed and put into service in 1952.An historical record showing the machinery used during this time, the number of workers and supervisors involved and the mountainous terrain where they worked. It also demonstrates the OH&S of the period with workers mostly in street clothing with no hard hats or other safety equipment. The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, was 125 years old when it was destroyed by fire early December, 2011. Mr & Mrs Crotty started the hotel, then one of their daughters who married a Higginson continued running it for a number of years. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. The Bogong Hotel commenced in 1886 and was the meeting place for people living in the Upper Kiewa Valley until it was burnt down in December 2011. Its publicans included members from local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and Hore's including Vera Hore who was born in 1909 and died in 2000. S. K Pearce owned shops in Mt Beauty and Tawonga. The postcard was used for tourism to attract visitors to the Mt Beauty township and the Kiewa Scheme on the Bogong High Plains. Organisations that Dorothy Anderson belonged to included many items to represent their clubs eg. badges, spoons, activities eg. crocheting. Dorothy lived in Tawonga indicating that those clubs existed in the town/area and were typical of regional areas of the time. These items were the property of Tawonga Citizen, Mrs Dorothy Anderson, who passed away in 2014, aged 90 years. She belonged to local clubs which existed in the area and acquired memorabilia belonging to those clubs and activities thus giving an insight into the life of women in regional towns. Kiewa Valley Historical Society was very active during the 1980's culminating in the publication of their book 'The History of the Kiewa Valley'. The North-Eastern Dairy Company was established on 14th December 1892 as a butter factory and built in 1893. In 1928 a new butter factory was built and a milk products factory in 1952. Whole milk sales commenced in 1951, with pasteurised, homogenised milk in both bottles and cartons being sold in the 1980's. Devondale / Murray Goulburn was established in 1950. Cartons enabled the safe transportation and storage of milk. The North East Dairy Company enabled the dairy farmers in the Kiewa Valley to send their milk and milk products eg. cream to the factory at Kiewa. The factory bought its own cream carting vehicles during WW1. The 'full cream / homogenised / pastuerised / milk' is an example of the milk available in the 1980's as many different varieties of ingredients followed in later years.Blue, red & white waterproof sealed cardboard box used for storing fresh milk from the Kiewa factory 'Murray Goulburn'. The High Plains Cattlemen's licenses expired in Aug. 2005 ending a 170 year history of alpine grazing in Victoria and Australia. This journal, No. 29, is published by the Mountain Cattlemen's Association "caring since 1835" and has articles and histories of the families and their activities. The Tawonga branch commenced in Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with other branches in the Kiewa Valley. Dorothy Anderson collected these original poems about the local area - Mount Bogong and the Old Tawonga Hall and written by local people.These items were the property of Tawonga citizen, Mrs Dorothy Anderson, who passed away in 2014 aged 90 years. Michael Thwaites and Pricilla Johnson (nee Reid) were also local people who lived in the Kiewa Valley.1. Bogong Village became a tourist town after the State Electricity Commission of Victoria sold it upon the completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Bogong Village was built by the SEC as a town for its employees on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Postcards were available at tourist destinations to promote the resort by enabling visitors to write to friends and family.The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme hastened the development of Falls Creek as a popular destination for skiers. Roads, buildings including accommodation & chalets, ski clubs, snow vehicles, ski tows etc enabled visitors to live and ski in the snow. Photo No. 1 - Junction Dam wall was commenced in February, 1940 and completed in March 1944. Type - reinforced concrete slab and buttress. Height 25.9m, and crest length 121.9m. Lewis Construction company had the original contract, but was replaced by the State Electricity Commission in 1942. Photo No. 2 - Bogong Village was the first village built to house workers and their families working on the Hydro electric scheme. Construction commenced 1940. The single men's quarters are slightly right of centre on the foreshore. The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council and the former Environment Conservation Council (ECC) and Land Conservation Council (LCC) have completed 36 land use investigations over more than 35 years, including 27 regional reviews. They provide a framework for use of Public Land in Victoria. The Land Conservation Council was established by the Land Conservation Act 1970. It makes recommendations to the Minister for Conservation with respect to the use of public land. Notices showing the boundary of the study area ... published in the Victorian Government Gazette Sept. 1973. A descriptive report was published in July 1977. Submissions (1538) on the future use of public land were received & included those representing a wide cross-section of the community. Roper's Hut was built in 1939 and was burnt down in 2003. It was rebuilt in 2008 and is situated on the Bogong High Plains on Duane Spur (where Duane's hut had been before it too was destroyed by (1939) bushfires, between Mt Nelse and Big River. The original hut was used as a shelter for cattlemen who grazed their cattle on the High Plains during summer. The Victorian High Country Huts Association Inc. members and friends helped rebuild the hut which is now used as an emergency shelter for visitors to the High Plains.The memorabilia is significant as the items belonged to the Roper family who were one of the original settlers of the Kiewa Valley and one of the original families who drove their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. The burnt plaque and forks and the rebuilding of the huts (Duane's & Roper's) are significant as bush fires are a constant threat to the Bogong High Plains destroying large areas at a time.1. In December of 1939 the excavation of a diversion tunnel was commenced to divert water from the East Kiewa River to allow construction of the dam wall. This was completed in February 1940. Lewis Construction Co. had the contract with excavation starting in February and the first batch of concrete placed in September. In 1942 the S.E.C. took over the construction and the wall was completed in March, 1944. Type of construction: reinforced concrete slab buttress.Of historical importance in the Kiewa area as it shows the form work and preparation necessary before the pouring of concrete for the first dam in the hydro electric scheme.
