East Charlton Hotel built in 1875 by John Flug to replace his original log and bark inn built 1863. The first inn was about 100 metres behind this building and it was Charlton's first commercial building. The hotel was rebuilt by C. Klug in 1891. It was rebuilt as a two storey building in 1925. Lou's Cafe c. 1987. In the 1930s and early 40's it was Riches Cafe and Billiards Saloon. Sold to Halligan's, Duggans, Jerry Cowell until 1951 when Luths took over the building as a Car and Tractor agency. Next door was Bennett's Shoe Repair Shop which was later a Stock & Station Agency. Original oil painting, by Harry Clarke of mud brick house & outbuildings near Eaglehawk Golf Course, in a timber frame, signature bottom right corner, with note stuck on rear. Harry Clark lived in Lobb St North Bendigo with his wife and son Max in 1940s. He moved around working for thre mines including Central Deborah (managing or as an inspector). he lived in Alice Springs for a while. He shifted to Wangaratta where he died aged in his 80s.
