This is a poster advertising the sale of the Lyndoch sub-division in Warrnambool with the sale of 200 housing sites. The sale took place about 1958 with the land sold by Frederick Gill, a Warrnambool jeweller. The land was previously owned by George Rolfe who had acquired the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1880s and named the property ‘Lyndoch’. He bought the surrounding land at a later time. This sub-division came to be known as the Gill Estate. It was a valuable site as many of the allotments fronted the sea and others were adjacent to the Hopkins River. This poster, although tattered, is of interest as it has many details of the Gill Estate sub-division and will be useful to researchers. This ledger contains original Warrnambool Standard newspaper cuttings of the eleven articles written by Henri Worland on the early history of Warrnambool. The subject matter includes the Post and Telegraph Office, Punts over the Merri and Hopkins Rivers, Transport in the Early Days, Early Exploration, Minjah Station and the History of the Breakwater. Henri Worland (1883-1972) was Warrnambool’s most important 20th century local historian. He was the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949 and his intense interest in Warrnambool’s history led him to collect and preserve a great amount of local history material. He wrote extensively on Warrnambool’s history and gave talks on the local radio station over a period of many years.These newspaper cuttings are of interest as examples of the many local history articles written by the important Warrnambool historian Henri Worland. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has a collection of Worland’s original writings in his own handwriting. This is a ledger book with a brown-coloured cover with red binding. There is a label pasted on to the front cover with black printing on it. The ledger has indented alphabet tabs and the pages are ruled with red lines for ledger purposes but these have not been used. The ledger has been used to paste in original cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper (Henri Worland articles from the 1940s). One page contains two copies of old photographs. This card is an invitation to attend a Night in the Gardens in March 2016 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. The first site of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens was near the mouth of the Hopkins River but this site proved unsuitable and a new location ( the present location) was found in 1866 bounded by Cockman Street and Botanic Road. In 1877 William Guilfoyle was commissioned to provide a new plan for the Gardens. This album contains photographs of a family, (the Horns of ‘Wildwood’, Warrnambool) and other photographs of Warrnambool – the foreshore, the Soldiers’ Memorial, the Breakwater, the Hopkins River, Liebig and Timor Streets etc. It has been made by a member of the Horn family and given as a Christmas present to other members of the family. Charles James Horn came to Australia in 1881and was a tutor to the Barber family of ‘Staywood Park’, Wangoom. He and his wife Emma then worked a property at Cudgee before settling in Warrnambool at ‘Wildwood’ in North Warrnambool. One of their sons, Charles Bernard Horn married Margaret Cairns in 1916 but died in 1927. Another son, Leslie, was killed in World War One. This little album is of great interest because it contains photographs of the Horn family and other photographs of views in Warrnambool. It is therefore of considerable historical interest and will be very useful to researchers. As it is a handmade item it is also of interest because it is an example of the sort of homemade items made as presents at a time (the late 1920s) when finances for something more expensive may not have been available. These are two items which are believed to be linked. One is an envelope marked ‘C.J. Horn, Wildwood, Warrnambool’ and the other is a blue-covered homemade album of photographs bound with red wool. The front cover has ‘Warrnambool’ written in red ink and the back of the front cover is stamped ‘Ralph Barnes, Chemist, Warrnambool’. There are 22 sepia-coloured photographs of a family (the Horns) and other views of Warrnambool. All have a label on the back. This is an invoice sent from the Warrnambool New Brewery (Walter Sheldrick & Co.) to Captain Selby. The Bill was for two dozen ales ordered on November 4th 1873 and for 6 dozen ales ordered on November 24th 1873 (cost £6-18-0). The bill was paid in February 1874. The Warrnambool New Brewery was established in 1868 by a company headed by a Warrnambool butcher and hotel proprietor, Walter Sheldrick. It was at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets. After the first year the company was wound up and Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price and, initially, two other partners, continued on the business. Sheldrick died in 1876 and his son Richard took over the business. By 1892 he had left the business and the brewery was operated by Edward Price, Edmund Hutton and William Trigg. In 1894 the brewery was sold and continued on until it was closed in 1922. The labels of Warrnambool Sheldricks ales had been known throughout the Western District for over 50 years. Captain Selby came to Warrnambool in the late 1860s and lived at ‘Clifton’ on the banks of the Hopkins River not far from the mouth if the river. He was a keen sportsman and was prominent in the Anglers Society, the Rowing Club (as President) and the Gun Club (pigeon shooting).As this is an original 1873 docket it is of considerable interest. It refers to the Warrnambool New Brewery, a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 50 years and to Captain Selby, well-known at the time in sporting circles. We have a good collection of other Captain Selby dockets. This 2014 calendar was produced in Warrnambool and features reproductions of photographs of Warrnambool in past times. The photographs include the Botanic Gardens, the Breakwater, the War Memorial, Proudfoots Boatsheds, Liebig Street, the old Information Pavilion and the Hopkins River near the mouth. The photographs in the calendar come from the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and were reproduced with the permission of the Society. This calendar is of minor importance but it does demonstrate the popularity of locally-produced yearly calendars and the interest in photographs of times gone. This is a 2014 calendar featuring twelve photographs of Warrnambool in past times. The photographs have been coloured or tinted and the front cover has a copy of the photograph featured for the month of March. This spinning wheel was recovered in pieces from N.S.W. and re-assembled in the 1980s by Les O'Callaghan, a Warrnambool historian and President of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years. The spinning wheel is believed to have belonged to Alice Allan (nee Mullaly) who married William Osborne Allan in 1844. They had three sons. William Allan was a pioneer settler who, in 1839/40, established, with his brothers, a property (Allandale) east of the Hopkins River in the area known today as Allansford. During the 1840s the property was divided with William taking up the Allandale section and his brother John taking the Tooram section. William died in 1860 and Alice continued to manage the property with the assistance of her sons until her death in 1887 when the Allandale estate was sub-divided. A spinning wheel such as this would have been an important item in a pioneer settler's home with the wife needing to spin wool or sometimes flax to produce cloth for clothing and furnishings. This spinning wheel is of considerable significance as it is believed to have belonged to Alice Allan, a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool district. This Warrnambool Rowing Club medal was awarded to the winners of the Society Fours in 1908. The Friendly Society group that won the race was the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a benefit society owned by members who assist other members in times of illness or unemployment. Originally founded in Manchester, England, the M.U.I.O.O.F. started in Melbourne in 1840. The Warrnambool branch was founded in 1860. The Warrnmbool Rowing Club was established in 1873, though there had been several boat clubs associated with the Hopkins River going back to the 1850s. No information has been found on R.Russell. This medal is of interest as a memento of a Warrnambool sporting club award in 1908 and of the winner of the award, a Warrnambool group and a member of that group.This circular brass medal has a shield shaped centrepiece with text on both obverse and reverse surrounded by a plain annulus edged with small scrolls. This tin comes from the Melbourne firm of Rolfe and Co. and would have held tea. Rolfe & Co. was established by George Rolfe (Senior) in 1854 as a wholesale wine, spirit and provisions business. George Rolfe was a member of the Upper House of the Victorian Government from 1860 to 1862 and in 1867. He died in 1871 and his son, also George, succeeded him as the managing director of the business. This George Rolfe (1837-1919) came to Australia with his family in 1849 and lived first in South Australia and then came to Melbourne, joining his father’s business, George Rolfe was a keen farmer and fisherman and after holidaying in Warrnambool for some time, bought, in the early 1870s, the property at the mouth of the Hopkins River which he named Lyndoch after the town in South Australia. He came frequently to Warrnambool. He later extended his farming interests which included the properties of Fairy Hill and Shipley. George Rolfe married Jane Ann Lake in 1891 and the Lyndoch property passed to two of his stepdaughters. Today the Rolfe property is the site of an aged care facility. The business of Rolfe & Co. continued well into the 20th century.This tin is of great interest as a memento of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, Warrnambool and his Melbourne business, Rolfe & Co. George Rolfe was a prominent person in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a metal container, rectangular in shape. It originally held tea. The sides of the tin have painted lettering regarding the contents and the supplier. This paint was originally in yellow, blue and brown tonings. The lid is round and slots into the rounded opening. The tin has been re-painted in a silver colour on the top and inside. The tin, especially the lettering on the sides, is much rusted and in some places the words are illegible. This item comes from the great aunts of the donor, women of the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. In the early 1840s William and John Allan took up large tracts of land to the east of the Hopkins River. In the late 19840s the run was divided, with William taking the Allandale section and John taking the Tooram section. In 1906 a portion of the Allandale section, including the homestead, was acquired by the Kinnear family. This hat is retained as an example of a woman’s hat from 80 years ago – stylish and eye-catching. It is also of interest as coming from the Kinnear family of Allansford.This is a woman’s hat – a spherical-shaped piece of dark blue felt or velvet curved to fit a head. This handmade woman’s nightdress comes from the Kinnear family of Allandale, Allansford. This is a white cotton nightdress with an opening to the waist which is enclosed with two white buttons. There is a frill of lace on one side of the opening. The white collar also has a large white frill of lace. The long sleeves are inset and have a band of lace at the wrists. This is a tea tin from the business of Rolfe and Co., a wholesale grocery and importing business founded in Melbourne in 1854 by George Rolfe Senior, a merchant and politician. George Rolfe died in 1871 and the business was then run by his son, George Rolfe, Junior. The business continued until at least the late 1930s. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a keen sportsman and he began holidaying in Warrnambool for some years in the 1870s when he started buying land in the area. By the early 1880s Rolfe owned 50 acres in Warrnambool and established his holiday residence at Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. He improved the original site with the addition of a large garden, stables, jetty, boatshed, water well, chaff and bone sheds, reservoir etc and bought other properties including Shipley on the Allansford Road and the adjoining property Fairy Hill. He continued managing the Rolfe and Co. business in Melbourne until his death in 1919. Today Rolfe’s Lyndoch property in Warrnambool is the site of an aged care facility. This tin is of considerable significance as it is a memento of George Rolfe who established the property of Lyndoch in Warrnambool and was a prominent land holder in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Note that we have another Rolfe tea tin but it is in very poor condition compared to this later acquisition). This is a rectangular-shaped tin with four sides originally painted yellow but now showing considerable rust. This is a letterhead from Proudfoot’s Boathouse in Warrnambool. Thomas Proudfoot built the boathouse near the mouth of the Hopkins River in 1885 and it was an accommodation and dining place for tourists, especially for those interested in fishing and other recreational pursuits and it was the base for the Hopkins Rowing Club. Proudfoot built additions in 1888 and 1893 and after he died in 1900 his wife Catherine continued on the business for over 30 years, transferring the licence to her son. In 1939 Thomas Proudfoot’s granddaughter, Ena Hunt gained the licence and operated the business with her husband Percy until 1979. It is Percy Hunt’s name on the letterhead described here. The business today is mainly centred around catering and dining. In the 1990s other buildings were added to the boathouse complex, with the original buildings now being heritage-listed. This item is of some interest as it is the only memento we have of the Hunt family’s 40 years proprietorship of Proudfoot’s Boathouse, a significant set of buildings in Warrnambool.This is a single sheet of cream coloured paper with blue and red printing and a blue-coloured photograph of Proudfoot’s Boat House. This medal was made by Stokes and Martin. Thomas Stokes established a medal-making business in Melbourne in 1856 and from 1867 to 1893 he had a partner, George Frederick Martin. In 1962 the Stokes business became a public company and operates today in Melbourne. The medal was awarded at the Annual Show of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association in 1877. One of the earliest agricultural associations in Victoria, the V.& H.A.A., the forerunner of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society, was established in 1854 and the first Warrnambool Show was held in 1855 at the first Royal Archer Hotel in Koroit Street. The Warrnambool Agricultural Show is still held annually. The medal, first prize for the best horse hay rake, was awarded in 1877 to the brothers, Thomas and William Rutledge, sons of Eliza and William Rutledge. The latter was a pioneer settler who came to the Warrnambool/Port Fairy district as the purchaser of the Special Survey, Farnham Park in 1841. His land stretched from Tower Hill to Dennington. William Rutledge Senior was a pioneer breeder of a Lincoln sheep stud, the owner of a mercantile business in Port Fairy, a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria and the pioneer developer of farming land around Tower Hill. His son Thomas (1846-1918) was a Warrnambool Shire Councillor who farmed in the Farnham Survey, living at Werronggurt . He went to the Geelong area at the end of the 19th century. His brother William (1849-1935) also farmed in the Farnham Survey, living at Farnham Park, He later lived at Airlie in Henna Street, Warrnambool and Sherwood on the Hopkins River and had land in the Otway Ranges. He later went to New Zealand.This medal is of considerable significance because of its age and its association with Thomas and William Rutledge and with the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association.This is a bronze medal with an image of agricultural implements, agricultural produce and farm animals on one side and etched printing on the other side. There is also printing around the edge of the medal. The medal has a small hole at the top for attaching the medal to a cord. This is a Warrnambool folding post card sold to tourists and locals in the mid 20th century. The card contains photographs of Warrnambool scenes – the Hopkins River mouth, the Botanic Gardens, Liebig Street, Fletcher Jones gardens etc. Warrnambool has been promoted as a tourist town since the late 1800s and attracts visitors in both the summer months (beaches, coastal scenery etc) and the winter months (visit of Southern Right whales and major sporting events). These badges were produced in the 1950s to raise funds for the Lyndoch Old Folks Home in Warrnambool. This aged care facility at the mouth of the Hopkins River was opened in 1952 when the property known as Lyndoch was purchased. Lyndoch had been established in the 1880s by the Melbourne businessman George Rolfe who bought up a considerable amount of land in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th century. After George Rolfe died his step-daughter, Florence Lake built the bungalow known as Lyndoch and this building was the basis for the development of the property into an aged care facility. Today the facility has been considerably expanded and is known as Lyndoch Living. These badges are retained as mementoes of the type of fund-raising ventures conducted in the 1950s to raise funds for local charities in Warrnambool – in this case ‘Lyndoch’ Old Folks Home..1 A metal badge with green lettering on a cream-coloured background. These coasters depict scenes from Warrnambool – the Botanic Gardens, The Hopkins River mouth and the Wollaston Bridge. All are areas of historical and tourist interest. The coaster were produced to raise funds for Peters Project in Warrnambool, a charity organization dedicated to bringing improved cancer care services to Warrnambool. The organization was founded in 2008 by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband Peter who died of cancer. The major aim of the organization was realized in 2016 when the South West Regional Cancer Care Centre was opened in a new building in Ryot Street and services to assist cancer patients in Warrnambool continue to be extended. The turpentine timber used to construct this table was originally used to build the second Hopkins River bridge in 1895. That long timber truss road bridge was built across the river close to the river mouth. The first Hopkins River bridge was built in 1862. That bridge was replaced by the second bridge, built in 1895. In 2001 the new third bridge was built to replace the 1895 bridge, in a design to look similar to the 1895 bridge. The timber from the second bridge was recycled to make this hall table, a cheeseboard presented to the Mayor at that time, and other mementos. The plaque attached to the table states the table was made in 2009 by Ralph Speirs, Warrnambool Triton Woodwork Club. The table is significant for its connection with the second Hopkins River bridge, built in 1895. The timber used to make the table has been recycled from the second Hopkins River bridge that was destroyed to make way for the new, third bridge. The Timber Truss Hopkins River Bridge was classified with State Significance on 16th April 1996, being the oldest of six surviving timber truss bridges in Victoria and the most intact timber road bridge of any type for its size and age. Its design was unique within Australia. It was the largest timber bridge built in Victoria during the 1890s. The bridge was of importance to the economical development of the region, opening up access to allow ease of trade and social connections between the eastern region of southwest Victoria and the town, later city, of Warrnambool and regions further west.Table made from turpentine timber. The Mahogany Ship is today regarded as a legend and refers to an ancient wreck that is purported to lie beneath the sand beside Armstrong Bay, several kilometres west of Warrnambool, Its location is currently unknown. For well over a century the mystery of this ship has fascinated Australians because the existence of such a vessel could throw a different light on the earliest phases of exploration of eastern Australia by Europeans. The story is that in January 1836 a party of whalers from Port Fairy travelled to the mouth of the Hopkins River in search of seals. Their boat overturned and one man was drowned. The three survivors were walking the 30 kilometres back to Port Fairy along the coast when, about halfway along, they discovered the wrecked ship in the dunes. It is said that Captain John Mills, who was in charge of the whaling station at Port Fairy promptly visited the wreck with several of his men, including Hugh Donnelly. Donnelly who was the originator of that version of events is now regarded as unreliable. Local history researcher Joan Fawcett believes Donnelly could not have visited the wreck in 1836 because he did not arrive in Victoria until 1841. The "mahogany" description can be traced to a letter from Port Fairy builder, architect and surveyor John Mason and published in the Melbourne Argus in 1876. He said he had seen the hull in 1846 and it "had the appearance of either cedar or mahogany." In 1884 Argus journalist `The Vagabond' wrote that the hull was built of "Spanish mahogany" and six years later Mason wrote another letter saying it might not have been mahogany but red gum or ironbark from New South Wales. He was too late with this new description as the wrecks mahogany tag was here to stay all through the hull was not visible as it had disappeared beneath the shifting sands by 1880. A more reliable account was later presented by the former editor of the Warrnambool Examiner, historian Richard Osburne, who wrote about the wreck in his book History of Warrnambool (published 1887). In it the author remembers to have noticed a wreck in the hummocks between Belfast and Warrnambool, in 1847 or 1848; he stated it was much nearer Warrnambool than Belfast, now known as Port Fairy, going on to state “in fact, it was only two or three miles from the former place, to the west of the big hummock which was supposed to fill Warrnambool Bay with drift sand washed by the Merri River before the cutting was made.” Osburne followed up with a letter to the Port Fairy Gazette on June 25, 1876, during a period of heightened interest in the wreck, although he was unsure of the provenance of the ship he went on to state in his letter. “The old wreck was, in fact, miles away from the Port Fairy beach, and only about four miles from Warrnambool. In the years 1847 and 1848. I have often seen the wreck and I regret to say I do not believe she was a foreign ship at all.”The ship model is significant for its association with the Warrnambool story of what is now referred to as the Mahogany Ship, an ancient shipwreck. The model is significant as it is an interpretation of a Portuguese caravel and possibly associated with the early history and exploration of Southern Australia. The model is a fine example of a hand crafted ship made from plans, not from a kit. Some of the materials used for the model are significant to the Gembrook community in that the timber used is a portion from a 30-meter pine tree that fell onto and destroyed the 120-year-old Gembrook church building. The model is also a dedication to Edward Kermond, who grew up in Warrnambool and claimed to have seen the shipwreck in the dunes when he was a lad in the late 19th century. This is a map of the Hopkins River Estuary prepared by Dr John Sherwood for the benefit of anglers. The information on the sheet includes the location of sand banks, the water depths, boat ramp facilities and public access facilities. Some of the information has been gathered from aerial photographs. The map has been produced by the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which was developed in the late 1960s from the tertiary section of the Warrnambool Technical College and with all its departments established by 1984 at the Sherwood Campus five kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. Today the site is occupied by Deakin University, Warrnambool campus. The Warrnambool Anglers’ Club has its headquarters on the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth of the river and the Lyndoch Aged Care facility.This map is of interest as a specialist one, providing fishermen with detailed information on all aspects of the Hopkins river estuary. Fishing has been both a profession and a popular recreational pursuit for Warrnambool residents since the early days of the city’s settlement. The Hopkins River Estuary has been a focal point for fishermen throughout Warrnambool’s history. This is a sheet of paper folded three times to produce a folded map. The front cover has a black and white photograph of two fishermen with a large fish. The map of the Hopkins River Estuary is in yellow, blue and black and covers the side of one sheet and three quarters of the other side. There is an advertisement for the Hopkins River Boathouse with a black and white sketch of the boathouse and notes on the map written by Dr John Sherwood. There are several diagrams showing the water depths. This type of folded postcards was popular with tourists in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s and often kept by them for many years afterwards. The views of Warrnambool here, taken about the 1950s, were typical of the Warrnambool postcards available at the time and were mass-produced as many examples survive today. They include photographs of Hopkins Falls, the beach and harbour, Liebig Street, Hopkins River, coastal scenery and the Botanical Gardens. These postcards are of some historical interest, though the photographs appear frequently in many publications. They also have a social significance showing what tourists bought 60 or more years ago.This is a packet in envelope form containing 12 coloured postcards of views of Warrnambool about the 1950s. The photographs are printed on buff-coloured paper and fold up to envelope size so that they can be sent by post. The front cover includes three dotted lines for the address and the back cover has a space to include the name of the sender. One page gives some general information on Warrnambool. These two motels were built in the 1960’s on the eastern outskirts of Warrnambool on the corner of the old Princes Highway and Simpson St. They were both built around 1960. The Turn In was originally known as Freeland’s Turn In. The Hopkins River, later the Riverside Motel, was demolished in around 2000. This photograph provides a view of Warrnambool as it was beginning the expansion on the East side of Warrnambool.
