This watch belonged to Norman Borthwick of Ecklin, who, with his wife and two children, Janet, aged 7 and Jack, aged 6, were survivors of the sinking of the cruise boat, Nestor, on the Hopkins River in January 1921. The boat was on its regular trip from the Hopkins River boatsheds to Jubilee Park with 80 passengers. Ten people were drowned when the boat began to take water and sank about a kilometre upstream. Norman Borthwick was wearing the watch at the time and the hands have stopped at 5.20 p.m. on the day of the tragedy. A hero of the day was Constable Sharrock who drowned after saving the lives of several of those on boardThis watch is of great significance as it is an item that belonged to Norman Borthwick who was wearing the watch when he survived the sinking of the Nestor in the Hopkins River in 1921. This is a badge of an Australian association of fellmongers, wool sorters and scourers. This group may have been part of the Amalgamated Fellmongers, Wool Sorters and Wool Scourers Union of 1912-1918 or it may have been an earlier association. A fellmonger was a dealer in the hides or skins of animals, especially sheep, or a person who removed the skins from animals. There were several fellmongery and wool scouring establishments in 19th century Warrnambool and district. This badge was issued in 1966 to a member of the committee of the Nestles Cricket Club in Dennington (Warrnambool). The Nestles Milk Factory was established at Dennington in 1911, being one of the few Nestles factories at the time to be opened outside of Europe. During World War One and the 1920s the Dennington Nestles Factory was the world’s largest milk condensery and at its peak in the 1960s and 70s was employing 800 people. It produced the drink, Milo and the coffee, Nescafe (this latter ceasing in 2000). In 2005 the Nestles Factory was taken over by the New Zealand firm, Fonterra and it is due to cease business entirely late in 2019. The Nestles Factory encouraged and sponsored several social and sporting clubs, including the Nestles Cricket Club and the Nestles Rowing Club. The Nestles Cricket Club commenced in 1944 and has been a part of the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition since that time. It still operates today under the same name and includes a women’s team. In the 1950s and 60s what we know as netball today was played by women and was known as basketball. No information has been found on this Warrnambool Basketball Association but it is most probable, however, that it was an early organization of men’s basketball teams. The game of basketball, founded in America, has become much more popular in Australia for both men and women in the last three or four decades with the local organization in Warrnambool known as Warrnambool Basketball Inc. and the teams Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids playing in a state-wide competition. This was the first visit of Queen Elizabeth to Australia following her coronation in 1953. Queen Elizabeth is the only British monarch to have visited Australia. She visited Hamilton on 26th February. School children from Warrnambool were transported to Hamilton showgrounds to stand in lines to view the Queen and the Duke standing in a land rover. This is an early 20th century example of a chronograph, a watch with stopwatch functions. Chronographs date from the early 19th century and were used particularly in aviation, astronomy, diving, automobile and other racing contests and artillery firing and with more sophisticated designs are still used today.This item has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes because of its age and its exceptional qualityThis is a chronograph, a display watch which also has a stopwatch function. It has a white face with black markings and Roman numerals and a gauge around the outer circle with numbers from 0 to 300. The face is covered with a glass frame. One hand and its pin are loose in the glass. The watch case is gold-coloured with a heavy ornamental pattern around the sides. At the top of the case is a ring for attaching the watch to a chain or belt. Gwendoline (Gwenda) Grace Watson Davies, only daughter of Mr. William Watson Davies and Mrs. Grace Davies (nee Hayes) of Arthur Street, Eltham was born in Newport, 18 February 1908. Gwenda grew up in Arthur Street and when she left school she was employed as an officer at the State Bank of Victoria, Chief Accountants Department, Head Office, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. During 1933-1934 in her early to mid-twenties, Gwenda wrote a series of poems which were captured in three books: one a leather bound three-ring binder with personalised gold embossing on the cover and two paper booklets held together by pink ribbon. These poems are a reflection of her childhood days, home, her mother, her environment, pioneering days and other miscellaneous subjects including one example titled “EIGHTEEN YEARS TO-DAY”, an homage to the brave men of Gallipoli. On October 20, 1937 after ten years of service, Gwenda submitted her letter of resignation effective November 26th as she was to be married in the near future to Fred Jones. Frederick Geoffrey Jones, born 7 January 1911, third son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jones of Napoleon Street, Eltham, married Gwenda at the Eltham Methodist Church on 27 November 1937. They made their home at ‘Llangollen’, Arthur Street, Eltham, a new house Fred had constructed earlier that year opposite the Shire Offices. Their residence was recorded in the Electoral Rolls from 1963-1980 as 6 Arthur Street, Eltham which was situated on the corner of Arthur Street and present-day Commercial Place. In the 1970s their home was sold and demolished to make way for the new shops. They built a new home at the top of the hill in Bible Street. In the Electoral Rolls for 1943-1980, Frederick’s occupation was recorded as a Plumber’s Assistant. Fred was also a long-standing member of the Eltham Cemetery Trust. He was first appointed 26 April 1944 and resigned 17 July 1957 to be appointed to the Warringal and Eltham Joint Trust where he served till February 1980. He then re-joined the Eltham Cemetery Trust and served a further 14 years till his resignation on 24 August 1994. In total, Fred represented the interests of Eltham Cemetery for 50 years (1944-1994). Gwenda and Fred were blessed with a son, Frederick William Jones in March 1942. Sadly, Frederick only lived two days and was buried at Eltham Cemetery on March 11. It is not known whether his grave is marked. A second son, Geoffrey Morris Jones arrived 25 November 1944 but he sadly contracted polio as a child. A fall down the front steps of Fred and Gwenda’s new home in Bible Street culminated in Geoff’s death from a heart attack whilst in transit to the Austin Hospital on February 6, 1979, at age 34. He was also interred in the Eltham Cemetery. Geoff was posthumously awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to fire safety at the CFA. A small man, handicapped from his childhood polio, he had figured prominently in the area as an active Apex member and as group officer for the 13 local brigades in the CFA Lower Yarra Group. His work for the CFA, all voluntary, included writing a fire-fighting manual and the innovation of aerial fire spotting and weekly fire reports. Gwendoline and Fred were presented with Geoff’s B.EM. award at Government House. Four years later on the anniversary of Geoff’s death, Gwenda could not sleep and collapsed in the hallway at home from a heart attack, 6 February 1983 at age 74. She was interred with her son Geoff, at Eltham Cemetery on February 9th. Fred died 31 July 1997 at age 86 and was also interred at Eltham Cemetery. A memorial plaque to Gwenda, Fred and Geoff lies within the lawn cemetery at Eltham Cemetery. In February 2022 Gwenda’s book of Poems along with a copy of her letter of resignation from the State Bank of Victoria and a news clipping about the Autumn Show held in the Public Hall at Eltham (opposite her home with Fred) in which Gwenda is listed as having entered Cream Puffs and a Swiss Roll into the Cooking section, were donated to the St Vincent’s de Paul Society in Bega, N.S.W.. A dedicated volunteer there researched their origins and desirous for these items to return ‘home’, posted them to the Eltham District Historical Society for which we are most appreciative. The 67th Battalion was raised in mid 1912 as a local militia training battalion in Bendigo. During World War One, many of its members enlisted in the newly formed 38th Battalion which was raised in Bendigo in 1916. At one point it was a garrison battalion stationed at Queenscliff. It was disbanded in 1918 and became the area 38th Battalion. The colours were laid up in St Paul's Cathedral in Bendigo on October 25th 1929. In 2006, with the cathedral needing to carry out repairs and alterations, the colours were offered to Bendigo's Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum. On 17th April, 2007 under direction from RSM Ceremonial, the colours were re-laid up in the museum in a ceremony conducted by the Reverend Peta Sherlock and witnessed by church and RSL members after 12 months of planning and putting together..1) Middle banner in the photograph. A purple circular border with 'Bendigo Infantry' on it surrounds the red medallion. All are surrounded by a gold and silver wreath depicting the flowers and leaves of the golden wattle. '67' is embroidered on the top right hand corner. The banner is fringed on three sides in gold. Two cords with gold and olive tassels are attached to the top right hand corner. A sewn sleeve for the pike is on the right hand side. .2) Wooden pike with metal spear head on end. In centre of PIPs green enamel leaves circular red enamel ring, Latin inscription: TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO, centre has 3 small gold crowns. The badge is circular with a wreath and crown at top. Centre is red, white and blue with "1939" in gold. Under is a boomerang with gold lettering re badge name.
