Photograph, Darley Football Team 1954
Darley Football club contested the 1954 Bacchus Marsh District Football Association Grand Final against Maddingley Football Club. This photograph is thought to have been taken in 1954. It is cited in some sources as the Premiership winning team of 1954. This is incorrect as Maddingley Football club were the premiers in this year. It is possibly a photo taken at the time of the Grand Final of 1954 and subsequently misidentified. Or, it may be a photo from another year in the 1950s.A black and white photograph print on a mounting board in a display folder, showing a group 30 men, 3 boys and one younger child seated on the knee of a man probably his father. The group is arranged in three rows, 10 in civilian clothes, the rest in vertically-striped guernseys and white shorts. In the front row, seated in the middle, are three boys, club mascots , dressed in uniform guernseys and shorts. Two of the men have towels slung over their shoulder, indicating that they were club trainers. The photo is taken in an outdoor setting, probably Maddingley Park. There are no names on the mounting board, but from information taken from "Bacchus Marsh. A Pictorial Chronicle", 1986, by Gwyn Moore and Jean Oomes. This source incorrectly identifies this team as Premiers 1954. Bacchus Marsh Express of Saturday 18 September 1954 reported "Decisive Win by Maddingley." Murray Comrie Collection. Murray Comrie, born in Tarnagulla in 1912 also became a policeman and later a Chief Superintendent, retiring in 1972 and passing away in 1983 after a long illness. Murray Comrie's son Murray Jnr., to avoid confusion became known by his middle name, Neil. Neil Comrie also joined Victoria Police and rose through the ranks to become Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1993 to 2001. Blue-grey archive box containing research notes of Murray Comrie. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accomodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The photo was taken after February 1972 but exact date is not known. The couple in this photo Bob Wight, who was the Superintendent of the house with his wife Jane. Later Bob died and Jane took on the role of supervisor. See also 00035 for a similar photo taken in 1975. Was in a folder marked 'Residences'.A record of the boys at Blamey house in the 1970s. Mr Maurice Ashkanasy, President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry is addressing the gathering. A photo spread in centre of The Sun newspaper showing pictures from the Government House Legacy Christmas Party in 1957. Featuring the Governor Sir Dallas Brookes with children on a miniature train. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Some notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in separate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. An article on the front page of The Sun with a photo from the 1956 School Students Ceremony. It was published on Anzac Day with articles estimating 20,000 people to march in the Anzac parade and the weather was inclement. The photo shows Margaret Mackey wearing her brother John Mackey's Victoria Cross The article was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Letter, Intermediate Legacy Club
A letter thanking Miss Lorna Skinner for her work with the Don Esses boys. The photos appear to be an outing of young children and some ILC members or Legatees. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. Record that the ILC had help from Lorna Skinner with the Don Esses boys classes. Ron Austin has the distinction of being the youngest surviving Melbourne Legatee to have served in WW1, he also served in WW2 and received an OBE for his tireless devotion to duty. Colour photo of a group of Legacy widows in Beijing China. Melbourne Legacy would help arrange tours and day trips for the Widows clubs. This was a tour in 1993 that went to China. There appears to be about 50 ladies in the photo with a two tour guides. From the sign it appears it was taken on 23 June 1993. The tour was run by Interasia Tours and advertised in The Answer. It was an 8 day tour to Beijing and covered places such as Temple of Heaven, Tiananmin Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall of China.
