The 1886 Irrigation Act in Victoria introduced the first legislation in Australia designed to enable the creation of a detailed scheme for agricultural irrigation. Part of the legislation saw the use of government funds for local irrigation projects. These local projects were managed by local irrigation trusts. The Lerderderg Irrigation and Water Supply Trust] was formed in 1890. This is the annual photograph of Grades 111 and 1V for pupils of the Orbost State School. The 19th of March 1886 proved an important day in the lives of many early settlers in the Orbost area, because on this day the Orbost State School opened. The fact that the school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of Head Teacher Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second Head Teacher, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner. The school now had accommodation for 30 pupils; the teacher's welfare was considered because quarters of two rooms were attached. As the population increased so did the needs of the school. This was reflected in the provision of a larger classroom in 1898. This item is associated with the history of education in Orbost.A black / white photograph mounted on brown car. These plaques were originally used for display purposes at the Warrnambool Racecourse. They commemorate Repellere, the winner of the Wangoom Handicap in 1928 and its owner, Mr T. Laidlaw. The Wangoom Handicap of six furlongs, first run in Warrnambool in 1886, is the most important sprint horse race in the Western District and is run at the annual Warrnambool May Racing Carnival which features the famous Grand Annual Steeplechase. These plaques are of interest as mementoes of the winner of the Wangoom Handicap at the Warrnambool Races in 1928. This race is one of the important events in the annual Warrnambool May Racing Carnival..1 This is a rectangular-shaped metal plaque. It has a yellow painted surface with a sketch of a jockey's silks and cap in red and beige. The paint is peeled and the plaque is rusty and slightly buckled. This book has the stamp of G.G. Humm and was presumably owned by him. George Gordon Humm (1886-1959) was the son of Elizabeth and George Humm. He was a grocer in Warrnambool. His father came to Woodford with his first wife in 1860 and set up as a butcher. He entered the hotel business and was at one time the licensee of the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool as were several members of the Humm family at a later stage. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Humm family, prominent in the Warrnambool-Woodford area in both the 19th and 20th centuries, This is a hard cover book of 115 pages. At the back are several pages of lists of publications by the publishers, Gall and Inglis. The cover is dark green with black lettering on a gold background and orange, black and yellow ornamental patterns. The back page has the initials of the publishers. The cover is somewhat faded. Although undated, the plan is probably from 1880-81. The plan is signed by Charles CLAY, Fred WILLIAMS and Witney Henry BATES. Charles CLAY was the Borough Surveyor from 1860 to 1884. Fred WILLIAMS was a Councillor 1875 to 1886 and served as Mayor, 1880-81. It is not known who Witney Henry BATES was. The Tesselated Tile company began in 1886 under the Wiseman brothers. At the beginning only bricks and stoneware pipes were manufactured. Mr E. E. Walker was engaged as manager and good progress was made until 1893 when the banks crashed. This business was a survivor and by the end of the 1890's the manufacture of tiles had begun. Edgar Edwardes Walker was the founding manager of the Australian Brick, Tile and Tesselated Tile Company, which began operations in Mitcham in 1886. Changed to the Australian Tesselated Tile Company in 1895, Walker became owner in 1922. It became the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. He was a Nunawading Shire Councillor for 25 years and several times Shire President.
