The exact creation of this Cigar Cutter is unknown, however the vintage nature and style of this cutter indicate that it was made in the early to mid 20th century. This cutter closely resembles the V-cut style of cigar cutter. These cutters are the most common type of cigar cutters and have been historically widely used. They cut a 'wedge' into the cigar cap rather than removing the whole cap like guillotine cutters do. This type of cut allows the smoker to get a deep cut into the V shaped cigar. Co-operative housing societies were loan societies established in the mid to late 20th century. They were based on the structure of a group of borrowers approximately 40, who lived within a radius of thirty miles joining a co-operative. They had the right to select their own site, plans and amount that they would like to spend. The co-operatives were administered by accounting firms. There were conditions placed on the borrowers in regard to amounts able to be borrowed and size of dwelling and percentage of cost which could be borrowed.The era of post-World War Two saw a shortage in a number of areas one of which was housing. The co-operative Housing scheme was preferred by many as it avoided the block approach which had been used by the Housing commission. Matches and match boxes were common and essential household items in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century. Today matches are used only irregularly. This match box holder was an advertising tool for Roy Pearson who had a motor service station at 100 Kepler Street, Warrnambool in the 1930s. The business was called the Super Service Station and Pearson was the agent for Triumph and Citroen cars. He sold petrol and used cars and did car repairs. In 1937 the business was run by Chorlton and GrahamThis item is of considerable interest showing the type of advertising used in Warrnambool in 1935. Apart from its utilitarian use of holding a match box, it is an advertising tool containing a 1935 calendar and it also uses humour as its main appeal. The holder features a face which shows a happy man when held one way (“This man calls at Pearson’s Service Station for satisfaction’) and a grumpy man when it is turned around (‘This man wishes he did call’). This is a metal match box holder, painted blue with yellow printing and an image of a man’s face. It has a 1935 calendar. It is much rusted on the inside and a little blotched on the outside. ‘Roy H. These items came from the Godfrey family who lived in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. The hat was bought and worn by Barbara Phipps (nee Godfrey) some time in the 1960s. It was bought from the department store of Cramond and Dickson, a prominent and important business in Warrnambool from 1855 to 1973. The two felt hat shapes were bought in Italy during World War Two by Jim Godfrey and given to his wife Joy. They were never made into hats to wear but remain in their original state. These items are of interest because they are connected to a 20th century Warrnambool family and because they are good examples of women's fashions of the past..1 A beige=coloured lady's felt hat with a slight fold in the crown and with a strip of felt around the outside of the crown ending in a single knot. These two ledgers, used between 1913 and 1926, come from the Haberfield family. James Haberfield came to the Warrnambool area from England in the mid 19th century and with his wife established a property, 'The Briars' at Dennington, near Warrnambool. Two sons, James Bertram and William, were cartage contractors and cash produce buyers in the first half of the 20th century with the business based in Fairy Street and Farnham ('The Briars'). These two ledgers contain the business dealings of the Haberfield Bros. business in the 1910s and 1920s. These ledgers are of considerable interest as they record the business details of an important early cartage and produce business in Warrnambool. Also the Haberfield family was a prominent one in Warrnambool in the 20th century. The building that contained the produce store run by William Haberfield at the corner of Fairy and Lava Streets still survives..1 This is a ledger with a black cover with a beige leather spine and edges and a red and gold label. The pages are ruled with red and blue lines and contain handwriting in black ink. Ellen and Charles Partington at Willis Vale: House built by Edward Maygar, Robert Whatmough lived there mid 19th century and later sold to Partington family. It was located on the Plenty River at Partington's Flat Greensborough. Land use included farming and orchards. This money, belt made of soft leather, would have been used in the mid 1900's by horse riding traders or wealthy property owners. It could also have been used by miners or other commercial business men. The main criteria for such a belt is security for valuables during travel on horseback. Commercial traders who plied their wares on horseback or caravans during a period where poor roads and flood prone rivers could dislodge wallets or money "sacks".The Kiewa Valley in the early 1900's was an environment which was frequented by the "canny" travelling salesman using dirt tracks and having to cross swollen rivers and creeks throughout the year. Travelling times within the rural areas in and surrounding the valley called for more frequent stops in bush lands. Camping presented itself with great challenges not to loose small cumbersome coin and notes. Local banks were of short supply and although bartering was a thriving method of transactions within the Valley traders from other regions were not so forth coming. Where ever possible local "trades" were called upon more than in city areas for limited products of a rural incline.This "vintage" handcrafted money belt has been professionally made circa 1950's. It appears as though it might have been made in a saddlery. There are five pockets each fastened by black painted "press studs". This bottle of castor oil was used during the mid to late 1900's when there was a Hospital in the Kiewa Valley, but regarded as only for serious injuries and near death situation. For this reason many households had a "first aid" box full of items such as this bottle of castor oil. Home based remedies for non life threatening injuries and illnesses were a part of life in a semi remote rural region. True and trusted family "health" remedies were passed from generation to generation.This Castor Oil bottle is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates the self reliance of the early farming and grazing pioneer families. Knowledge of "first aid" was uppermost to the survival of families before the late 1900's. Naturopathic remedies such as connected with the castor oil contained in this bottle, although may not be sanctioned by medical research, does not take into account of the positive "self healing" of the human mind (if you think it is doing you good it creates a positive action). Such preservation techniques were handed down through the generations.Medical Reference material was limited to books available and read and not not from "the internet" in the latter part of the 1900's. The availability of General Practitioners increased because of the boost in the population growth (SEC Vic Hydro Electricity Scheme) in the Kiewa Valley from 1940's onward. Believed to have come from Tooram where it was used for cheese making. Tooram commenced cheese manufacture in the mid 19th century in a purpose-built bluestone factory beside the homestead. It was initially set up by Pierce and a long article in the Warrnambool Standard describes the factory and its processes. Cheese production continued through changes of ownership until the 1930s when the Uebergangs ceased making cheese on site. Black and white photograph depicting a dog (named Jack) carrying newspaper delivery from the railway station up Were Street (to the Post Office). Mr. and Mrs Musselwhite ran the post office and owned Jack (the Alsatian dog) which was trained to go down to the railway station each day about 3pm and collect the daily parcel of evening newspapers, delivered by train, and take the bundle up to the newsagency. This leather badge was made around circa 1950, and was sewn on to the leather jacket worn by Ian Downing. The Braybrook Motorcycle Club was formed in 1947 and on the 10th July 1950 merged with the Sunshine Club to form the Braybrook & District Motorcycle Club. In the mid 1960's the club disbanded and its activities were merged with the Newport Club. Mary-Lou began exhibiting in the mid 1980s and over the years has been involved in producing unique pieces as well as developing a large range of domestic ware. In 1984, six months after graduating from a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Phillip Institute of Technology, Mary-Lou was invited to present a solo exhibition at Devise Gallery in South Melbourne. This objective, she says, compelled her to find a studio and was an incentive to focus on developing her ceramic practice independently.Mary-Lou Pittard holds close ties to the Shire of Nillumbik - living and working within Eltham. Her Eltham North Mudbrick Studio employed 5 assistants until recently when Mary-Lou and partner Chris Pittard have scaled down operations. They now produce everything themselves and find that this enables them to focus on producing unique, sculptural ceramic works. Mary-Lou is currently exploring the fine qualities of porcelain and combining these with her ongoing passion for decorative colour and form. 'Decorative Bowl' is a wheel-thrown/moulded bowl, oblong in shape and has been manipulated by hand. Narrow sections have been incised from the main body, perhaps a practical design feature for air circulation, and the rim has been altered to form a jagged edge. Bold colourful shapes decorate the interior of the bowl. The wagga was owned by the great uncle of the donor's husband, George Stephens. Mr Stephens was a mining engineer in the late 1800s to early 1900s in Stawell, Main Lead (near Beaufort), Diamond Creek and Costerfield in Victoria. His last residence was at Bosterfield, where the wagga was used as a bed quilt in the mid 1940s. It may have also been used in the childhood home of Mr Stephens at Stawell. Mr Stephens saved the life of a blacksmith at Diamond Creek Gold Mine circa 1910.A wagga made from men's suits and coats, unpicked and sewn together. The first successful stripper harvestor ,a Nicholson & Morrow harvestor invented by James Morrow appeared at the Victorian Government trial at Dookie Experimental farm on Dec 27th 1883. Although the stripper harvestor was being manufactured in small numbers by the mid 1800's it did not take over from the tripper until 1904. Hugh McKay soon became the most successful manufacturer of stripper harvestors under the "Sunshine " name and by 1940 over 40,000 harvestors had been produced.This 1916 H.V. In 1902 a ballast siding was opened 4km south of Gellibrand to provide materials for track construction. A spur siding, with points facing Beech Forest and a capacity for six trucks, was cut into the side of a slope. Above this was erected a loading bin and chute. The stone proved to be of durable quality so the siding continued in commission after 1902 for track re-ballasting work. By the mid-1920s Victorian Railways found it more economic to use ballast from Penshurst, so the siding was closed by 1925 and the rails lifted.Photograph; B/W. Linda Britten is a fashion designer who graduated from RMIT in 1968. Following her graduation she worked in the design house of Noleen King and freelanced for Kenneth Pirrie. She opened a shop in Hampton, Melbourne in the mid 1970s, and then another in Chapel Street. She first used the ‘Linda Britten’ label in 1978, designing and selling ‘up-market couture and eveningwear. Later, from 1980 she was to specialise in bridal wear. Items such as this cushion covers were purchased by Australian men and women serving during the First World War as souvenirs of their travels and gifts for their loved ones at home. BHS records indicate that this cushion cover belonged to Mary Crombie, an early Victorian dentist who lived in Brighton while she was studying at the Australian College of Dentistry in the mid-1900s, and later returned to the area in her retirement from 1949-1971. As tourism and car culture grew in the early and mid 20th century the need for street and touring directories grew. Bendigo's geographic location within central Victoria and relatively closeness to Melbourne meant that the district has long been an ideal car touring destination. A. E. Pritchard was a licensed surveyor with an office in Bull Street Bendigo and produced these handy bound directories which fit neatly into the car glovebox therefor serving both the local and state demand for high quality printed directories such as these. Les Fox Trophy Donor: Les Fox Deed of Gift: No Les Fox was the father of Bill, Jack and George who were all members of the RBYC. This trophy was originally used for mid-week racing then later re-allocated to a Division 2 race on IRC handicap during a heat of the Club Marine Series. Top Gun Trophy This trophy was presented to the "Mid-Week Muddlers" (later renamed the Clive Hearne series) by Graham Noel of Hot Shot B67 in December 2004, and is to be awarded on a year by year basis to the boat which achieves the best starting performance on aggregate. Hopefully this trophy will encourage competitors to further hone their starting skills.
