‘Adeney Avenue’ was the title given to this painting following its donation to the Kew Historical Society, yet the work’s origins predate the naming of Adeney Avenue in 1907 [originally gazetted as ‘Park Street’ (1865) and ‘Park Street South’ (1875).] Park Street ran between High Street and Parkhill Road beside what was later to become ‘Victoria Park’. This area was described in 1851 as “…a dense forest of gums and wattles which were to be largely cleared by 1888 after the naming of a recreation reserve”. The Reserve was still bisected by an unnamed creek in 1896, when the area was surveyed by the MMBW. The panoramic vista selected by the artist would appear to include ‘Eborensis’ (c.1895) on the corner of Parkhill Road and what was then Park Street, with views across cleared land towards the distant ranges. In the 19th century, north Kew was largely undeveloped farms stretching down to the Yarra. Oil on canvas by an unidentified artist of a panoramic view depicting what is now known as East Kew with mountains on the horizon. In the foreground is a two storey brick residence - Eborensis - located on the northeast corner of Parkhill Road and what is now Adeney Avenue. The view of the landscape and its rolling hills resulted from farming practices adopted following colonisation and settlement. Stan and Mary Parker commenced the Plant Farm in Smythe Street Wodonga in February 1949. The nursery consisted of two blocks, on one of which their house was built. They started off with approximately £70 and a 1939 Singer mini-Ute. In the early days most customers came from the farming community. In late 1951 the Parkers purchased to a new site on the corner of High and Osburne Streets. Business went well and in 1957 they purchased the adjoining block. They later demolished the old house on the corner of High Street and Osburne Street, building a new home lower on the same block. As the nursery prospered Stan and Mary built a shop and showrooms with glassed-in portion for the indoor plants and a large shaded area for the display of shrubs. In 1978 they sold the nursery to Mr. & Mrs. John Gale. In 1981 the Wodonga Plant farm was purchased Geoff and Kay Pollard and they moved to its current location at the corner of Beechworth Road and Huon Creek Road. Initially they brought it as an investment but it soon got into their blood and chose to not only continue but expand the nursery and its offerings. This included a large showroom, a water shop which specialises in pool equipment, chemicals and water testing, a children's playground and an outdoor blind centre. Further expansions led to the addition of a Tuscan-style cafe on the site which has become a meeting place. The business was nominated the Yates Victorian Best Garden Centre in Australia for many years and won the award in 1997. These products were delivered in bulk to Wodonga and then re-bottled by the local distributors. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006.These items have local significance as they were supplied by prominent businesses in Wodonga.2 brown glass bottles with triangular base. State School No. 3161 was originally situated between High Street (then Bulleen Road) and Kilby Road adjacent to Burke Road and was officially opened on 25th April 1892 with Mr Roland Gray as its Headmaster. With more people moving into the district, the School was moved in 1905 to Strathalbyn Street. (This site was to became the Kew East Bowling Club, and is now a Kindergarten.) 1929 saw the erection of the brick Infant School adjacent to the main building. In subsequent years many other buildings were added, including a weatherboard ‘Rural’ school, a brick library, an administration block, several portables, and a Community Music Centre and shelter sheds, culminating in the opening in March 2011 of the Commonwealth funded new Music/Sports Complex. At one time it was called Kew East Central School and included years 7 & 8. Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. This laundry basket was reinforced with a solid heavy base that gave it both strength and the ability to remain upright as clothing items were placed inside. Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. The location of the original printing business was in High Street, Bendigo but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. Bolton Bros continue to trade today with fifth generation family ownership continuing the tradition. George James McFarlane was born on 19 August 1895 in Wodonga, Victoria. He was the youngest son of Charles John McFarlane and Emily Charlotte nee Ellis. He married Margaret Frances Kirley in Wodonga in 1918 and they had 6 children. George kept this diary for most of 1927. It documents his daily life and some local events. George worked part time with the local blacksmith and then on his own farm before and after work. He was later to take over the blacksmith himself, operating as a blacksmith and farrier from premises in High Street, Wodonga. George's diary documents his daily dedication to other jobs on the farm including trapping and shooting vermin such as rabbits and foxes, growing watermelon and vegetables and training horses. He also became a member of the Albury Coursing Club. In his later years, George moved to Euroa and then fo the Northcote and Broadmeadows area of Melbourne where he died in 1968.A small diary with cardboard cover including volume and publisher details within a border. A red and white retailer sticker has been adhered to the front cover. The diary includes a calendar for 1927 and 37 pages of information including postal, money order and telegraphic information, British weights and measures and Directions for Making a will. The remainder of the diary is divided into 3 days per page. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The registration number on the fork Rd. 758470 indicates that this design was first patented in 1930, therefore helping to establish provenance of this set.A set of 6 cake forks in a hinged brown box with apricot silk lining. During the depression of the early 1930s, men on the dole carried out work for the Wodonga Shire Council. One of the projects during the term of councillor Mick Martin, as shire president, was to seal the footpaths in central Wodonga. Local business people supplied the cement. The police department refused to fund the cement for its section of High Street, north of the railway line, which included the police station and the courthouse. The then licensee of the Terminus Hotel offered to provide the cement for sealing the footpath in front of the police station and courthouse. This offer was made on the condition that tiles bearing the words Terminus Hotel be inserted into the footpath pointing toward the hotel.The police objected but the hotel licensee, Tex Bailey, won the day. As a result, his hotel’s tiled name was inserted into the footpath in front of the police station. Cr Mick Martin’s son, Des, wrote to the council in 1967 asking that the sign be preserved and it was moved to the Terminus Hotel and placed in the footpath there.The Terminus Hotel was one of the earliest hotels in Wodonga with clear links to the establishment of the railway line. It was an important business and meeting place for social gatherings.The name, Terminus Hotel worked into the brickwork of the footpath when they were surfaced by sustenance workers during the 1930s Depression.
