Churchill Island Heritage FarmTool - Crosscut Saw
Cross cut saws have been used for millennia, but they came into wider usage in Europe from the 15th century onwards. The term 'cross cut' refers to the blades on the saw’s cutting edge which come in a variety of different patterns. These saws are specifically designed for cutting across the grain of the wood by timber workers, sawyers, and other land workers for tree felling and cutting up larger pieces of lumber into smaller more manageable pieces. The saws come in variable sizes and lengths and are designed for use by one or two people. With the two-man saws, a method of alternating 'pull and push' to drag the blade back and forth through the timber, maximising efficiency and labour division. Donated by Wilfred Dungan on behalf of the Dungan family Collection originally used on the property of the late Dr Rae Dungan in Falls Creek Rd Olinda, purchased in the late 1930s from Olinda pioneers Harry and Minnie Holden. Also on the property of late May Farndon of Farndon’s and Falls Rd Mt Dandenong – aunt of Dr Rae William Dungan and also an early pioneer. Family holidays and weekends involved use of these sorts of farm implements plus working with horses. Post-war, the Olinda hand tools and machinery moved to the Shady Creek, Nilma North area where bush, pasture and cows had replaced the Olinda property. Wilfred well remembers being on one end of the crosscut saws cutting fence posts, logs and timber under “the tireless and vocal instruction” of a red headed local Darnum Rd legend called Harry Collyer. “He drove an old Rugby car and nearly pulled me through the logs with every cut!” steel blade, wooden handle and peg grip. James Tyson (8 April 1819 - 4 December 1898) purchased Heyfield Station from the Firebrace family in the late 1860s. Tyson referred to Heyfield as his "cabbage patch". Tyson was famous for insisting his workers were accommodated at the same standard as he was, and arranged for George Drew (1834-1892) and his family to come to Heyfield from his home station at Deniliquin to make bricks for the homestead and for the workers quarters. As far as can be ascertained they arrived in 1868, and selected land that became known as the Brick Yard. After making the bricks for Tyson he operated as would any normal brickmaker. George carried on the business until his death, with it being then operated by his sons Jack and Henry. Many buildings in the district contain Drew bricks, which are sometimes smaller than normal bricks. The most accessible example is the first Anglican Church of 1874, now in the school grounds.This brick has historical significance as an example of one of the early bricks made by the family, similar to those made for James Tyson, an important figure in Australian history. It has community significance as the story of the Drew family (who still remain in Heyfield) provides the community with a strong link to Tyson. Mr Cornish sat for the artist in his office dressed in his cap and gown. Initially the portrait was hung in the main school hall, before being moved to the Cornish Campus in the mid 1990's.Richard Burnet Cornish was principal of St Leonard's College from January 1971 to October 1989. He was a dreamer, a driver, a doer and a visionary leader who purchased the land for Cornish Campus in July 1981 and presided at the official opening in February 1987. Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a long and interesting history. From 1872, Samuel Amess was the primary owner of Churchill Island, having purchased it from the Rogers family. During his time on the Island, he built the main house and developed the surrounding land and gardens significantly as a holiday house away from the pollution of Melbourne. Council purchased four hectares of land strategically located ...In 1976, the Shire of Pakenham recognising that Cockatoo was the second largest township within the shire, acknowledged requests for the provision of recreation facilities. Council purchased four hectares of land strategically located in the Town Centre and in conjunction with the local community, embarked upon a programme of staged development of the site. The first stage saw the construction of the kindergarten building which was opened in 1977, followed by the bowling green, tennis courts, netball courts and public toilets. The Community Complex Building was the final development of the site.The Cockatoo Community Complex building, was the final stage of the development and was opened on the 20th November 1982. It was a replacement for the old Cockatoo Hall, which had not been renovated since 1936. The old Cockatoo Hall was lost in the Ash Wednesday fires on the 16th February 1983. Broadcasting Station 3CV, Maryborough. A souvenir of the opening of the New Studios and Offices of Central Victoria Broadcasters Pty Ltd. March 2nd, 1956. Established 1956, offices in Burke Street, opening coincides with the stations 21st birthday, March 2 for the former celebration, October 26 for the latter. Coverage included Bendigo, Ballarat, Daylesford, Castlemaine and Maryborough. 3CV plays active part in assisting charities and hospitals at Maryborough, Daylesford, Maldon and Dunolly. Active Women's Radio Club with branches in country centres adds strength to station's charitable efforts. Opening 3CV's new premises will widen the scope of the station's charitable efforts, and stronger link with Australian Commercial Broadcasting stations. Coal fields at Wonthaggi. 1917 a public meeting was convened in an effort to stem the tide of adversity. Mayor George Frost, M.L.A., decision to form a Progress Association, a policy of secondary industry was decided upon and committees were appointed, James L Drew much credit is due. Maryborough's move for rejuvenation was revolutionary, because apart from Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong, it was regarded as so much presumption that industry could be expected to function with success in a country town. Governments were unsympathetic. Maryborough & district people showed determination to succeed and their faith in their town. Employment and economic security provided by the industries outweighed the debt. Maryborough's general position is that it is no longer dependent upon one particular phase of activity. The first of the industries to be formed in 1918 was the Butter Factory. The nearer dairy companies did not take kindly to the prospect of another opposition company taking supplies from their districts, and in the first few years of establishment completion made the going hard for the management. But adopting a conservative policy and placing all profits to reserve I the first six years of operation headway was gradually made. Thus it was a red letter day for the company in 1925 when the first dividend of 5 percent was paid.1955 dividend of 10 per cent. Operating it's own trucks the dairy serviced local dairymen up to 40 miles. Maryborough Knitting mills est. 1923, having transferred from Clunes. Out bid Ballarat and Bendigo to the industry. The mill has what is probably the largest circular underwear plant in the Commonwealth, which is conservatively valued at 198,913 pounds. It produces between four and five million garments each year, worth over one million pounds. The company has established subsidiary mills at Dunolly, Talbot and Avoca. The company also assisted in the establishment of the Interknit Hosiery Co. Ltd., Clunes. The Maryborough Flour Mills is the second oldest of Mayborough's industries. It was built by Mr Cadwallader over 70 years ago. It was later sold to Mr. A Land and then to Jas. Minifie & Co. It had a somewhat 'in-and -out' existence until purchased in 1923 by Messrs. Willersdorf and Forbes, of Eddington. In 1939 the firm began to build silos for the storage of bulk wheat and the present storage capacity is 100,000 bushels. 1944 power was changed from steam to electricity. The mill has an out put of 20 sacks an hour. 1938 a chaff mill was built, and now is regarded as one of the best in Victoria. Its output in one year of approximately 6,800 tons is a State record for a single cutter. During this 30 year period Patience and Nicholson Limited has grown with Maryborough and is now one of the major key industries of Australia. The P&N brand covers precision tools - taps, dies and twist drills - indispensable to the country's economy, and quality is acknowledged equally by an air craft factory in Canada, a dockyard in Thailand, a railway workshop in New Zealand, no less than by our own Australian industries. Maryborough can be proud of the part played by P&N in war when, geared to the needs of the times, it poured countless millions of tools into defence factories and to the armed forces of the Allies, and now in peace when it is providing, hydro-electric undertakings and the manufacture of cars and tractors. From 1858, W Phelan & Sons Pty Ltd has made phenomenal and spectacular growth, becoming incorporated as a private company in 1929. It is without doubt the greatest private development in the history of Maryborough. 1940 joinery manufacture was commenced. The company entered the Ready Built Housing field in `950 - and in 1951 established a factory at Cairns, Northern Queensland to overcome the manufacturing difficulties being experienced due to the shortage of plywood in Victoria. Present activities include: Ready Built Housing Factory, on-site building, a modern joinery, timber yard, drying kilns, etc., and plumbing & electrical & engineering services, a door and panel factory at Cairns, retail hardware store, Melbourne Sales Depot. Hedges & Bell Pty Ltd were est 1945, with a staff of 40 employees are the largest printing firm outside the metropolitan area. Dr. Gwen Wilson, Emeritus historian, gifted this book at ANZCA's first independent Annual Scientific Meeting held in Launceston in 1994. Dr Wilson presented this gift after her speech about the life of William Russ Pugh and his significant contribution to anaesthesia in Australia. It is unclear as to how the book came into Dr Wilson's possession. Published in London, 1845, for Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, this book was formally owned by general practitioner Dr William Russ Pugh, being the first medical practitioner in Australia to administer ether anaesthetic on 7 June 1847, in Launceston. The author of the book, P E De Strzelecki acknowledges Pugh for his assistance during his stay in Launceston and for allowing him the use of his laboratory for the analysis of the soils and minerals that were subsequently reported in this book (Page 131). Tan coloured cloth book with an embossed circular motif on the centre of the front and back cover. The same embossed motif is repeated four times along the spine of the book. An embossed design of small, four petal flowers borders the edge of the front and back cover. The title of the book 'Strzelecki's New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land' is printed in gold on the spine. The cloth has come unstuck at various places around the spine and a small section is missing from the base of the spine. The cover is worn and has numerous dark stains possibly from mould. The book contains 19 engraved and lithographed plates. This includes a handcoloured octavo folding, geological map, bound as a frontispiece, depicting the NSW coast down to Gippsland and Tasmania, a fold out single colour geological cross section of the Newcastle Coal Basin, 14 plates illustrating shellfish and flora and three tinted lithographs. Single page maps at the back illustrate wind patterns around Australia. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. The Church has a varied collection of stained glass, including work by leading stained glass firms and artists in Victoria in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Ferguson & Urie, William Montgomery and Brooks Robinson. The 'shipwreck window,' north west transept, is an historically significant memorial window dedicated to Miles and William Dalzell Nicholson, the second and third sons of the Hon. William Nicholson, M.L.A, a Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Premier of Victoria in the 1850s. Miles, died in England on 27 April 1874. His younger brother William died in the wreck of the ‘British Admiral’ off King Island on 23 May 1874. The images show the condition of the church at the time they were taken (c 2012). Signs of deterioration can be seen. Nicholson, to Gertrude Sarah, youngest daughter of the late James Swindells, Esq., of Manchester. It was a magnificent residence built in the regency style to the design of architect John Gill and set in landscaped grounds of nine acres and included an ancient Swiss cottage. When Green died in 1861, his executor was his neighbour, William Nicholson (1816-65) who owned Fernleigh immediately to the north in Grey Street, but actually lived in Barham House during his time as Premier of Victoria 1859 - 1860 until his death in 1865. In 1866 Richard Twentyman purchased Fernleigh from the Nicholson Estate and a year later he married Nicholson's widow, Sarah. Both remained at Barham House until June 1870. In 1871 the building was substantially remodelled and re-named Eildon. St. David's Presbyterian Church Parkdale was constructed as an all-purpose hall on three blocks of land at the corner of Evan and McSwain Streets, Parkdale that had been purchased by the Home Mission Department. The hall was opened and dedicated by Rev. Paul Baker on February 11th 1962. The church was named the North Mordialloc Presbyterian Church at this time. The hall was extended in 1966, and in 1973 the church was re-named St. David's Parkdale. In 1977 St. David's became part of the Mordialloc-Parkdale Uniting Church Parish which comprised the former Mordialloc and Parkdale Methodist churches and St. David's Parkdale Presbyterian Church. The last service was held on 6th November 2011, and funds raised from the sale of the buildings were used to renovate the Parkdale Uniting Church. It became... to organisations, people, and disaster areas, as well as to purchase house ...On 12th May 1953 a meeting was arranged by the Lions Club of Footscray, and was held at the home of Bill Harvey in Sunshine, with the intention of forming a club in the Sunshine area. The first official luncheon was held on 3rd June 1953 at the Sunshine Town Hall and was attended by representatives from Melbourne, Footscray and Essendon Clubs. After the membership reached 25 the Lions Club of Sunshine was Chartered on 21st July 1953, and became the 5th Club in Victoria and the 17th in Australia. Over the years the club raised funds through various activities to provide charitable donations to organisations, people, and disaster areas, as well as to purchase house and land for a Senior Citizens Club. It became necessary to sell the house and land years later. The Lions Club also contributed to the Sunshine Swimming Pool which was opened in December 1960, and was welcomed by the children of Sunshine. Some of the activities to raise funds included Guy Fawkes bonfire nights, rodeos, paper and bottle drives, jumble sales,Tivoli Gala Nights, car raffles, and sausage sizzles. Over the past 10 years the Sunshine Lions have put in thousands of hours of work, and have disbursed in excess of $200,000 for charitable purposes. As well as supporting overseas projects and natural disasters, the Lions have continued their community work. Funds have been donated to care providers such as the Mercy Hospice and Scope, and also used to provide Christmas hampers and dinners, and for underprivileged children to have holidays. Some of the organisations that have recently received funds were Helping Hands Across the Pacific, Gellibrand Services, Royal District Nursing Service, and the Sunshine Mission. During 1960/61 the club membership reached a record 58, however at the time of the 60th Anniversary dinner the membership was 17, three of which were in their seventies and 3 in their eighties. The above brief historical information was sourced from the 60th Anniversary Dinner booklet.This booklet is significant because it contains an 11 page summarised historical record of the 60 years of activities of the Lions Club of Sunshine. It also contains an Honour Roll of past members and of members who received awards, as well as the names of the 61 people who served as Club Presidents from W.T. Harvey (1953-54) to P. Green (2012-13). The booklet can be used as a starting reference source for anybody seeking information about the Lions Club of Sunshine Inc.White paper booklet of 20 pages with blue printing and a blue and yellow Lions International emblem on the front cover. The booklet contains the dinner Menu and the Programme for the evening, as well as a summary of the 60 years of activities of the LIONS CLUB of SUNSHINE. He attended Wesley College in his school days, before going on to study law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating from university, Busse would go on to become a barrister, but he is best known as a writer of fiction, publishing two novels: 'The Blue Beyond: A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia' and 'The Golden Plague: A Romance in the Early Fifties'. Busse died in 1960. This particular object is dated 1895, three years before Busse was born. It can thus be assumed that it was awarded to a relative of his, possibly his father in relation to their land by the Murray River. This object is significant as it is associated with Wilfred Clarence Busse, a celebrated author and barrister who grew up in the locality of Chiltern. It is also a medal awarded by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, a society that has held social and industrial significance since it was founded in the nineteenth century.
