The Ballarat Junior Technical School was opened in 1913. Originally situated at the Dana Street Primary School, it was relocated to a custom built school in 1921 in the grounds of the School of Mines Ballarat. The building is now used as the Prospects Restaurant (2012). The drum was one of the BJTS school instruments and seems to have been signed by the many students who played it over period that the school was in operation. This drum appears to be the same one as is shown in a 1913 photograph of the whole school although the skins have been replaced and one of the oldest signatures on the current skins is dated 1939. The Clunes Knitting Mill in Fraser Street, Clunes was the former Salvation Army Barracks which were moved from Bailey Street, Clunes to Fraser Street, Clunes by tractor in 1918. The Country Townspeople's League was founded in Clunes its mission was to campaign to decentralise industry and provide manufacturing and employment opportunities in country Victoria, specifically at that time, for the continued financial support of the Clunes Knitting Mills located in Fraser Street, Clunes, Victoria. A Bill to give effect to the proposed Clunes Country Industries Policy was to be introduced at the assembly of the new Victorian Parliament in around 1921. Eliza Hand married Ellis Jeeves in 1885. They had 12 children, with 8 surviving to adulthood (5 boys and 3 girls). Eliza was one of the daughters of Thomas and Eliza Hand of Mountain Grange Homestead. Eliza and Ellis extended their home in the valley 'Kalorama' to become a Guest House. In 1908 they purchased 'Mountjoy Guest House' from the Paynter family and ran a very successful guest house and coach business. Following the death of Ellis Jeeves in a buggy accident in 1921, Eliza ran the guest house and her son, Hubert, the coaching business. Beltana was launched in 1921 at a cost of £179,000. She was a passenger liner built specifically for the UK-Australia emigrant service via the Cape of Good Hope. In October 1917, she was requisitioned for Transatlantic service where she carried munitions and supplies, returning to emigrant service in 1919. On 31 March 1930 she was sold for £27,000 to Toyo Hogei Kabushiki Kaisha, Japan for conversion for the whaling trade. She was not renamed, being laid up in Japan. She never traded under the Japanese flag. In 1933 she was sold to Gentaro Kasegawa, Kobe for demolition. The first Baptist church in Kew was wooden and erected in St John's Parade in 1854 and was enlarged in 1859. A brick church was later erected in Cotham Road in 1882 and was later named Newnham Hall after Reverend Newnham. In 1921 land was purchased in Highbury Grove at a cost of 602.00. Messer's E & F Ratten donated 6 feet of land beside this new purchase which allowed for a frontage 79 feet. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid on 14 October 1922 by Councillor F.R. Patten J.P. It is believed that he was Hugh William Caffrey with Service number VX120388 who served in the second world war in the 2/12 Australian Infantry Battalion. Born in 1921 in Maffra. From his medals, he served in the Pacific in the Second World War, as he has (from left to right) the Pacific Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, The Australia Service Medal 1939-45, and last is the 1977 EIIR Silver Jubilee medal. The statement reads as follows:- "The ornamental shield with a casket giving the History of all the pupils who offered for War service in the 1914 - 1918 War was made by the pupils of the Sloyd (woodwork) class and Mr Kidman headmaster. He also wrote the honour book in fine calligraphy. A framed collection of their photographs was donated by Mrs. J.B. Richardson. These were unveiled in a special ceremony at the school on the 17th October 1921. Also in 1921 an Avenue of Honour of gum trees was planted by schoolchildren and residents, along both sides of the Boorahaman road in front of the school. I do not know the exact date most of these trees remain. When the school was closed in 1949, local residents were invited to remove what ever they fancied, so Mr W.B. Richardson chose the two above mentioned items. After the death of both parents - last one in 1977 - Clarice Tobias and her Husband Jim took care of the shield and the photo`s. During 2002 the photo`s were presented to Wangaratta R.S.L. Sub/Branch, and the shield went to Brisbane where it was beautifully restored by Wallace Richardson and his son-in-law Reg Townsend shortly before he passed away. Dr. Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (studied at Melbourne University) was a Surgeon Lieutenant on the destroyer S.S. Napier during WW11. Pieces of shrapnel hit Dr. Murphy on the head and he was saved by his tin helmet. He retired to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, the well loved Dr. Murphy provided medical care, working 7 days a week and travelling all over the hills making house calls in all types of weather. Many families couldn't afford his services, and they didn't receive an account or if they did pay, the cheques were not cashed. Often payment was rendered in the form of fruit and vegetables. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. This case belonged to Leonard Thomas (VX21070) who was born on 23 Aug 1900 in Cardiff England. By the Second World War, Thomas had emigrated to Australia and was residing in Elwood when he enlisted in Caulfield in 1940. Thomas served during the war as a Private and was discharged on 31 May 1949 from the AIF Mov and Control Group. His full service records are not currently available via the National Archives Australia and so it is unclear whether this case was part of the equipment of his role or a personal item.This case contains a number of inscriptions which may aid researchers to understand the life and movements of the owner, Leonard Thomas. The apparent crest is of special interest, suggesting that Leonard Thomas was connected to equine activities though the unavailability of his service records mean this fact is not confirmed. The item has interpretive potential, to discuss matters of equipment, emigration, use of horses during war and possibly leisure activities if the crest is taken as a reference to polo.Horse shoe shaped case in brown leather constructed of a lid and base. Used for storing shirt collars. Lid and base respectively constructed of two pieces of leather (one top and one edge) which are stitched to heavy card interior lining, mustard yellow in colour. The lid and base are held together by a sewn on leather strip and fastened at the top with a metal buckle; the holed strap through which the buckle attaches has broken. This strap in turn passes vertically down the back of the case and underneath (forming the strip which joins the two halves). Exterior base carries handwritten inscriptions, as does the interior lid. Black ink stamps throughout.Stamps read "L THOMAS" along an upturned horse shoe, underneath which are possibly clubs and an up-facing arrow. Service number written on side of case reads "VX21070". Handwritten inscription reads "Leonard Thomas/33 [illegible three words]/Cardiff/April 20th 1921." The school badge was hand-painted on a wooden Art drawing board by an unknown student after the Higher Elementary School had been upgraded to a High School in 1948. The latin inscription, "Acti labores lucundi", can be freely translated as "Finished work is pleasant." The school badge, with its stalk of maize was designed by Clarke Cowell who was in the first Senior Class at Orbost Higher Elementary School in 1912. Clarke Cowell followed teaching as a career and was the first head teacher of the Corringle School, No. 4909, which opened on Feb 7 1921 and operated as a half-time school with the Marlo School No. 3433.Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . Sunshine biscuits were made in Ballarat from 1921. During WW11 Sunshine biscuits devoted 80 percent of its output to army services. The company was twice devastated by fire. In 1923 the factory was completely destroyed and was rebuilt as a more modern factory on the same site. In 1939, a deliberately lit fire demolished the workshop. Sunshine biscuits continued to be sold until 1991. Biscuits were sold by weight from a large tin in the grocer's shop.This tin seems to be a commercial tin used in a grocery shop. Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls record him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. She had an older brother Geoffrey David (1913) and younger sisters Gwynneth (1918), Isobel Lillian (1921) and Shirley Inez (1928).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. Designed and built in the early 1920’s by Charles Robert Prosser , a Melbourne Engineer, for an enquiry by the Commonwealth Government into ways of solving the break of gauge problem. Breaks or changes in railway gauges existed at most state borders of Australia during the first half of the 20th century. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The designation "Nippon porcelain" refers to porcelain made in Japan for export to the west, and stamped with the word Nippon on their bases. This practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren't "plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labelled in legible English words." Unfortunately, many reproduction or fake pieces were also produced. In 1921 "Nippon" was no longer accepted by U.S. Customs Agents as the correct name of origin so from then on, imported Japanese porcelain was supposed to be marked "Japan". This information helps us to establish provenance of this item as after 1921.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of Japanese porcelain of the early 20th century.A small teacup and saucer with a design of a couple in a garden. The design is repeated on the saucer. There is a circular pattern in red and gold around top of the cup and the rim of the saucer. Gilt decorations are included on the handle and around the inside of the cup.Under the saucer: Maker's mark inside a triangular shape and below a crown: "FINE CHINA/ Royal Nippon/ MADE IN JAPAN"domestic items, chinaware

Won by Collingwood Technical School 1923, 1925, 1928,1932 Cup is inscribed ‘METROPOLITAN / JUNIOR / TECHNICAL / FOOTBAL / ASSOCIATION / TROPHY / Under 14 years’.
