The Geelong Harbour Trust Band was one of five brass bands existing in the Geelong area in the early 1900's. They were quite successful in competition under the direction of conductor Mr Harry Shugg. After their conductor, Harry Shugg left to conductor the Malvern Tramways Band in 1915, the band merged with the Geelong Municipal Band to become the Geelong City Band.This postcard is significant as it provides a historical window on this (former) brass band and their achievements. James Henry Steward (1817–1896) established J.H. Steward in London in 1852. As “Head Optician” he would have been a qualified oculist but little is known about the founder’s early life and scholastic achievements. However, given the variety of disciplines for which he undertook he was also an accredited instrument maker,he clearly was a gifted scholar and quickly gained professional recognition in a full range of fields for an instrument maker of his day. J.H Steward became incorporated as J.H. Steward Limited on 1st February,1913. The business grew from modest beginnings. Steward would sell pocket watches and assorted items at the annual competition days of "The National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom(NRA)" from a stall. As the governing body for full bore rifle and pistol shooting sports in the UK. The Association established in 1859 with the aim to improve the shooting skills of the newly formed corps of volunteers to meet the perceived threat of an invasion by the French. J.H. Steward advert first appeared in the NRA competition program of 1865. The NRA meetings were held at first on Wimbledon Common, Surrey until 1889. Then because of pressure by the local community, the NRA along with its buildings and its flourishing meetings moved further south to Brookwood, Surrey. By now the Steward operation had grown from a modest stall into a large marquee selling various optical and scientific instruments at these meetings. Throughout its long trading history the J.H. Steward company and many members of the family maintained strong ties to the NRA and competition shooting events. The NRA records show that at the end of the 19th century the NRA bestowed a Life Membership on 7 Steward family members. First presented by J. H. Steward Ltd. in 1902 was the “Steward Trophy” that is still an annual competition for teams of four from any rifle club affiliated to the NRA. There is also evidence that many family members were fine shots.The item was made by a significant instrument manufacturing company that concentrated during the middle 19th century on supplying the British military. This items pattern & design is still available as a reproduction, available on the internet. However this original seems unique as the writer cannot find another for sale or in a collection to date. The assumption is that this type of compass was made for the British artillery units given the sun dial. This tie pin has as its centerpiece a souvenir medal from the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. This exhibition was held in the Town Hall and Council Buildings and the Mechanics’ Institute and temporary buildings at the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool. It was held over three months and attracted many visitors and featured concerts, sports events, industrial exhibits and a variety of competitions. This is an interesting and important item. It is one of the more unusual mementoes from the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition and shows the use made of souvenirs from exhibitions around the world. This tiepin was purchased in an antique shop in England in the 20th century. This is a metal tie pin with three circular coins, soldered together at the edges. In the middle is a souvenir medal of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7 showing an image of the Exhibition buildings at the corner of Timor and Liebig Streets on one side and a Coat of Arms on the other side. The two smaller coins on each side are imitation British half crowns. This barrel was probably used to hold ice but minus its insert could have been a biscuit barrel. In the days before refrigerators were common household items the barrel would have been a useful portable ice carrier for use in a hotel bar or at a table. The plaque on the side of the barrel suggests that the barrel could have been awarded as a trophy or prize in a sporting competition. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a household item from times past.This is a wooden barrel with silver-coloured metal bands on the top and bottom of the barrel, a metal handle and a detachable metal lid. A metal plaque is attached to the side of the barrel with metal pins. The inside of the barrel has a ceramic insert with a metal rim. This cup came from the Warrnambool APEX Club . The first APEX Club was founded in Geelong in 1951 and Warrnambool APEX Club was the fifth Club founded in 1951. This was a community service organisation with members aged between 18 and 45. Warrnambool APEX Club closed in 2011. It is not clear what this trophy was awarded for but the local APEX Club was involved in debating and public speaking competitions.This cup is retained as an important memento of the Warrnambool APEX Club (now closed).This is a silver plated cup. Alison Watson was the daughter of Peg and Harry Watson of Cromie Street Murtoa and would have been seven years old when this certificate was granted at the Murtoa Swimming Baths. The Baths were adjacent to Lake Marma and filled with water from the lake. There was a wooden pontoon in the centre of the pool which was removed for swimming competitions. This letter from Mr L.R. Killeen, Secretary and Manager of National Capital Development Commission, is an invitation to Robin Boyd to join the judging panel for a competition for a memorial to activities of the Royal Australian Air Force over the past 50 years. The letter also discusses financial recompense. The background information concerning the project was enclosed, but has not been found in Robin Boyd's papers here.

The British Empire & Commonwealth Games took place at the Dalkeith Bowling Club in Perth, Western Australia from 19 November until 1 December 1962. The bowls competition started several days before the official opening of the Commonwealth Games. The published list of representatives does not include William Forrest Passmore so it is assumed that he was an emergency or one of the support staff.Green wool blazer owned by William Forrest Passmore of Ascot Vale (1901-1980). This gown was the winning entry in the Mannequins and Models Guild's Gown of the Year competition, held at the Chevron Hilton Hotel, Melbourne in November 1963 in aid of the Torch Bearers for Legacy. Designed by Lorna White for Hartnell of Melbourne and modelled by Marien Brindley, the dress’s construction is reputed to have consumed 300 hours, with the finished dress weighing 6 kilograms and costing around 3000 pounds. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This bear is in an Australian Army uniform in a camouflage pattern. After a naming competition, Melbourne Legacy calls him Banjo. Sometimes special editions of the bears were produced. The wooden outhouse was erected in the former Sunbury Asylum grounds and was a popular outdoor building where the patients and staff relaxed while walking around the grounds.Patients were encouraged to spend time outdoors and the extensive and elevated grounds provided plenty of space. Arthur V Gregory b.1867, d.1957 worked from studio at 326 Albert Road South Melbourne established by his father G F Gregory in 1852 SS KATOOMBA of McIlwraith, McEacharn & Co entered the Australian trade in 1887 bringing immigrants from Britain to Queensland. They entered into the fierce competition for passenger trade in the first decades of the 20th century when competition for passengers required companies to provide more than converted cargo vessels. In 1909 their ship KAROOLA won a reputation for its salubrious accommodation and its size, and was the first Australian ship to exceed 7,000 tons. The company maintained the advantage in 1912 by commissioning KATOOMBA, which was larger and more luxurious than all its generation of passenger ships. KATOOMBA was requisitioned as a troopship in both World War I and World War II.
