Orbost & District Historical Societyframed photograph, C 1904
The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. (Ref: In Times Gone By-Deborah Hall) This frame was made by Mary Lynch, wife of Matt Lynch. Pictured in the photograph are: Back: W. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to the contract to perform the horse work for the tramway for a period of one year. The horse work involved the transporting of goods by horse drawn tram trucks, all repairs to the tracks , shunting and delivery duties. The tramway operated from 7 am to 6 pm six days a week and a team of six horses was required to perform the work.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people.001261.1 Pale blue lined paper with red lined outline.Hand written in black pen with names and some other words underlined in red. In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. The project was launched on the railway reserve near the corner of Evans & Farrell streets. Sapper Darren Smith was born in Adelaide, South Australia in November 1984. Darren enlisted into the Australian Army Reserve in November 2001 and subsequently transferred to the Australian Regular Army in October 2004. After five years service in the Royal Australian Engineers, Darren deployed to Afghanistan in March 2010 while posted to the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment. Darren was involved in a route clearance task ahead of an Australian patrol in the Mirabad Valley on 7th June 2010. He and his Explosive Detection Dog ‘Herbie’, a 3-1/2 year old Collie Cross. were inspecting a suspected improvised explosive device when it was detonated by insurgents. This Smithy is a replica of the building in which the first H. V. McKay harvester was built at Drummartin in northern Victoria in 1884. The original Smithy was moved from Drummartin to Sunshine Victoria where it remained for many years outside the H. V. McKay manufacturing plant. With the construction of the standard gauge railway line the road outside the Smithy was demolished, and the original Smithy was taken to the Melbourne Museum.The original Smithy is now in a fragile state and is no longer on public display at the Melbourne Museum. The site where the original Smithy stood in Sunshine was no longer available so the replica Smithy was erected a few hundred metres away, in the South East corner of Barclay Reserve on King Edward Ave, Albion 3020.The replica Smithy permits the public to view a full sized model of the building which eventually led to the formation of the H. V. McKay Sunshine Harvester Works. This firm grew to being considered the main manufacturing plant in the southern hemisphere, and also led to the local area being renamed in 1907 from Braybrook Junction to Sunshine.Brown wooden building with bark roof. This uniform probably was worn by a cadre staff member posted to 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles to provide training to reserve soldiers. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Annual Camp was the most important training period for an Army Reserve unit. Detailed planning was undertaken to ensure its success. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in England. The postcard is a picture of the Trooping of the Colour in London shown as rows of Queen's guardsmen. It is addressed to Hugh Caffrey (?) at Legacy House. It is dated 15 June 1995. It says: "G'day Hughie. Recognise me. I'm behind the bloke in the hat in the back row. Had a wonderful VE-50 week of celebrations. The RAAF were really looked after, reserve seats and all. A further week at the old dome was terrific. People were wonderful to us. Have just returned from 21 days around Europe Fantastic. About the head around the British Isles and Ireland. Regards to all at Legacy, Cheers. Officer's dress boot worn by Brigadier Geoffrey Austin Street MC who served in WWI at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Following the war he was placed on the Reserve of Officers. He returned to military service in 1931 as Squadron Commander in the 4th Light Horse. He was promoted to the command of the regiment after l8 months' service, and finally to the command of the Third Cavalry Brigade which included the 8th Light Horse Regiment. Brigadier Street had entered Federal Parliament in 1934 and in November 1938 was seconded from military duties to serve as Minister for Defence in the Lyons Government . He was serving in this capacity in the Menzies government when he was killed in an air crash near Canberra on 13 August 1940.Representarive example of officer's dress boots from the 'between the wars' period. Well preserved example of the boot makers art, complete and in good condition. Harcourt Valley Heritage & Tourist Centreconcrete blocks, 1914
Charles Seelenmeyer conducted Concrete Utilities Limited (Harcourt Cement Pipe Factory). Operated in Harcourt circa 1914 to 1930 in premises situated opposite the ANA Hall on what is now the road reserve. Principal raw material was sand from the adjacent waterway ( Barkers Creek.) Principal output was concrete drainage tiles for use in district orchards but concrete blocks were also produced for construction of homes and commercial buildings. At a time of rapid expansion of the orchards this industry provided a vital piece of orchard infrastructure, mostly buried and not now visible but nevertheless a very important feature of the valley’s horticultural industry.. Homes built with these concrete blocks are a distinct part of Harcourt’s housing stock. Harcourt Cement Pipe Co was an example of local initiative to solve a local problem using local materials. Photos of the Legacy Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance from various angles and three plaques that explain the garden and flowers. It is called the Garden of Appreciation 'marking the generosity of Victorians in supporting Legacy in its work of assisting widow sand children of deceased veterans'. The 'Widow and Children' statue was commission by Legacy and installed in 1998. The Garden is in a cruciform shape and is on the eastern side of the Shrine Reserve near Birdwood Avenue. It was formerly called the Garden of Memory from 1980-1986 according to Monument Australia website. One plaque explains 'the garden features the Flanders Fields poppies, the seeds which came from Villers-Bretonneux, France'. The borders of the main components of Kew and Kew East have not always conformed to current boundaries. In the past this photograph has been labelled as East Kew, whereas for most of the twentieth century the site has been within Kew's borders. The purpose of the photograph is unrecorded yet it has value in that it shows those businesses who occupied this site in Kew during the early 1960s.This small photograph is significant as it shows the location of and building used by WD Vaughan, former Mayor of Kew who was a successful newspaper proprietor in Melbourne.Small polaroid colour positive of High Street in Kew, probably in the 1960s. From left we can see the brick viaduct covering the tracks of what was once the Outer Circle Railway. Behind this brick wall, Dunnings Timber Yard was situated. At the end of the walls of the viaduct there is an entrance to a walkway [now the Anniversary Trail], which once provided access to Windsor Avenue, and also to the East Kew Station (now demolished and part of the Outer Circle Railway Reserve). On the other side of this walkway is a cream brick building (demolished) occupied at this time by WD Vaughan Pty Ltd, printer and publisher of the Kew Advertiser (newspaper). Stretching behind the brick facade is an extensive building that must have housed the printing works. Beside Vaughan's, there is a large building (demolished) housing at that time an estate agent named AJ Kennedy. Edithvale is a suburb in the City of Kingston. It is located between Aspendale and Chelsea on the Port Phillip Bay and built within remnant areas of the Carrum Carrum swamp. The foreshore precinct comprises a wide sandy beach, with low sand dunes and numerous historic boat sheds. The suburb consists of older style dwellings and former holiday houses, combined with mid-century housing and newer homes. The large blocks are increasingly subdivided and the existing dwellings demolished to accommodate units and townhouses, thus changing the landscape of the area and reducing the tree canopy.The beachside suburb of Edithvale was previously part of the extensive Carrum Carrum Swamp. The area was once a source of fish and eels for the Mayone-Bulluk clan of the Bunurong people. Over time the area was drained and predominantly devoted to dairy farming and holiday houses. The farms were gradually sold and subdivided with a large number of homes built after World War II and in the 1960s. Edithvale is mainly residential with a shopping strip along Nepean Highway but little significant industry was ever established in the area apart from a plaster works and confectionary factory, both now closed.Laminated aerial colour photograph of Edithvale as viewed from Alexandra Avenue in the north to Ella Grove Chelsea/Edithvale in the south. regents Park Aspendale can be seen in the top left. The area is built-up with residential housing and facilities including Edithvale Primary School, numerous churches and the Edithvale Railway station. Large sections depict the remnant Carrum Carrum swamp. Edithvale Common and the former "Duck Inn" (Melbourne Water/Friends of Edithvale Seaford Wetlands) can be seen. Edithvale Recreational reserve, the valodrome and Edithvale Public Golf Course are prominent. The image shows vacant land in the area now known as Aspendale Gardens and the newer residential section of Chelsea Heights is not developed. A bike path has been established to cover the secondary drain.
