This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. William Corbould was the son of a Ballarat tailor. He attended Ballarat College, and obtained certificates in assaying and metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1883, studying under the revered Professor Mica Smith. Corbould was not a born student and remembered his first experience at SMB: 'From the Registrar's Office I was led to be introduced to the Professor of Chemistry, one Mica Smith. The initial encounter gave me little encouragement - his large laboratory was filled with hundreds of bottles bearing strange labels with queer symbols on them. My heart sank. At the first opportunity I grabbed my hat and made for the door, but the good professor called me back. I pointed out that I was never any good at school ... so it was no use pretending to be clever enough to understand all those weird symbols! The Professor told me not to worry about that and took me to one of the benches where he found a blowpipe and a charcoal block. Mixing together two powders from bottles on the shelf he transferred a sample to the charcoal and directed the bunsen flame onto it. Soon it began to melt and a white bead appeared in front of my eyes. He then took a test tube and added a little colourless liquid from each of two bottles. A beautiful dark blue colour appeared. My interest was won.' During Corbould's mining career he travelled to Europe twice, and visited most of Australia's main mining fields. Corbould started his career as an assayer at Pinnacle Silver Mine, Silverton, and was then a self-employed assayer at Broken Hill. Corbould became an assayer for the infant BHP mine, and later worked in Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, including managing Hannan's Reward, the oldest gold mine on the Kalgoorlie gold field. He spent 13 years at the Mount Elliott copper fields as general manager. In 1923, at the age of 57, Corbould went to Mount Isa and reported on options, experimented with new metallurgical processes and floated a company. John Carden of CRA said: 'Corbould was the man who brought Urquhart to Mount Isa. He was the man who made it all possible. He is tremendously important in the Mount Isa story, because he was the first technical man, the first professional man on the scene. He was responsible as I said, for bringing finance to the place, but I think even more importantly he was the first man to recognise the need to put all the little claims in the Mount Isa discovery together. I think perhaps his major contribution to Mount Isa was this amalgamation on the various claims. He recognised that the ore bodies at Mount Isa were not as rich as Broken Hill and they would never have survived had it been fragmented, so he was terribly important.' After completing major financial negotiations for Mt Isa Mine from London in 1927 Corbould remained in Europe where he remained until his death. Corbould was awarded the Legion of Honour of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurigical Engineers for fifty years service. Corbould died at Monaco in 1949 at the age of 82. In February 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School opened its doors to its 86 pupils. The old bluestone building in the grounds of the Dana Street Primary School became their temporary home for eight years. In its early years the school offered only a two-year course. The first year was of a general nature giving a thorough grounding in Mathematics and Instrumental Drawing, and introducing students to the various branches of trade work. The second-year students studied for the Junior Technical Certificate and specialized in a course of their choice - either a trade (Woodwork or Fitting and Turning) or a course leading to higher studies at the School of Mines. Increased enrolments - 86 to 110 in the second year. Some applicants were turned away due to lack of space. An abandoned single room school was brought in and this helped for a time. Plans were developed and a two-storied red brick building in the vacinity of the School of Mines was build. An acre of land was reclaimed from the north-east corner of the Ballarat Gaol. The school backed onto the wall of the gaol. The task of landscaping and terracing of the area was to cost a great deal and time. The boys did much of the heavy work. This kept them occupied as the official playground areas were still full of rubble. Scrap book containing invoices relating to accounts to be paid by the Ballarat School of Mines between 1870 until 1875. The School of Mines at Ballarat was the first school of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. The works done to the former Ballarat Circuit Court House were overseen by Robert Davidson (architect and Surveyor) with the contractor being James Williams. Large book, green leather with red binding, numerous original invoices pasted onto the pages. The first pages of the scrapbook includes correspondence relating to the refurbishment of the former Ballarat Court House which was used as the Ballarat School of Mines from 1870. These are plans for proposed additions to the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The date of the drawings and the maker of the plans are unknown. The additions do not appear to have been built. The Church of Christ in Warrnambool was founded in 1875 after a meeting at the Warrnambool Temperance Hall. The building in Spence Street Warrnambool was erected in 1884 at a cost of £1600 and officially opened in 1885. This church was sold and in 2000 the congregation moved to a new building at 186 Raglan Parade (called Gateway Church of Christ).These plans are of some interest as being part of the history of a Warrnambool church – the Church of Christ Warrnambool. These are two rough drawings on cream-coloured paper showing proposed additions to the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The drawings are in pencil and include the front elevation plan and the first floor plan. The captions are in capital letters. Charles Knight is an English publisher and author. He was born at Windsor in 1791, and died in 1873 at Addlestone, Surrey. This book covers the period of English history from pre Roman times to the Industrial age. It shows how life was like in old England in regards to people, places, architecture and fashions, etc. The book contains 1000's of wonderful engravings, hand coloured plates beside 100's of pages of text contained in one volume. A large leather brown/gilt cover book with black leather bound and corners. 392 p. with coloured and b/w illustrations. The property in the foreground is 'Edgeware' at 171 Union Road, a house built by the Zeplin family. It became the home / residence of Dr Percy Liddle and later Dr James Landells Blakie. By the time this photo was taken Dr Blakie had moved across the road to 174 Union Road. In the background behind the 2 houses in the foreground is the Surrey Hills Stationmaster's house, sitting behind a picket fence. The Alan Holt register gives a build date of c1915 for this house, which fits stylistically. The first stationmaster was probably Michael Ginnane, who stayed in the area after he retired, moving to 1 Russell Street. This property was listed as 8 Bedford Avenue, the only house on the south side of the road. It was demolished in c1972 to make way for widening of the rail track with a third line. The photographer Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s, in particular of events and activities associated with the Church of England.Black and white photo taken from the steeple of Holy Trinity Church looking across housing towards the railway line and Albany / Windsor Crescents and on towards Canterbury Road. Surrey Hills Primary School and St Stephens Presbyterian Church feature prominently on the horizon.
