Please see our record 3732 of the mode Sovereign of the Seas for further details of the ship and the maker. This vintage Portrix sander-polisher represents tools used for the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been carried as a leisure activity out for generations. Ship model making was also a pastime for sailing crew, who often made a model of the ship in which they were sailing. This sander was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. Domestic object - Sewing Machine, 1911-1920s
This machine was made in Baden, Germany, for the Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who imported machines from various manufacturers and had them branded with their Ward Brothers decals. This machine is most likely dated after 1911, when the Ward Brothers became two separate businesses, as there are only remnants of two portrait decals on the machine bed. There is a fitted embedded ruler in the wood of the base. Many sewing machine manufacturers in Germany produced their machines specifically for export. A company could mass-produce its machines and give the same product several different brand names, according to their overseas buyers. There was a huge market for domestic machines as it enabled tailored clothing to be made in households at a fraction of the retail prices. Ward Brothers began in Australia in the late 1890s and early sewing machines sold by them had the three brothers on their decals. In 1911 the brothers divided into two separate firms, one operating on his own, the other two remaining together, and all still operating in Melbourne and at first still using the name Ward Brothers. This sewing machine is one of two hand-operated Ward Brothers machines in our collection that were made in Baden, Germany, and the only one that has the two Ward Brothers on its decal and that has side to side slide plates. This machine represents the early domestic market for sewing machines, making it possible for the everyday homemaker to produce fashionable garments and linen ware that was affordable. The owner of this machine could work at more than one location as it was portable and did not require a large space to set up. The machine is associated with the well-known Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who sold imported sewing machines that were branded with their own name.Sewing machine with case. The black-painted metal machine is hand-operated and the crank handle is wooden. The machine is on a wooden base and has a box included that contains many machine accessories. Made in Baden, Gemnamy, for Ward Brothers of Melbourne. There is an attached metal plate on the front with rows of groups of numbers on it. The wooden bed has an embedded ruler. The machine had decals with geometric designs and the maker's name.Printed in script: "Specially made in Baden / by Ward Broth Melbourne"flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime museum, maritime village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, sewing machine, hand operated, domestic sewing, homemade clothing, fashion, ward brothers, made in germany, baden, front and rear slide plates, post wwi, post 1911 -

Functional object - Marine Lamp, R C Murray & Co Ltd, 1900 -1930
The item is a kerosene marine ships lamp used onboard ships and smaller vessels for general lighting and navigation the subject lamp was made by a very well known maker R C Murray of Glasgow Scotland. During the research several different addresses were found but nothing on the founder or company history. It appears RC Murray made not only marine lamps but lamps for the railways as well. The company is listed in the Scottish Post Office Directories for 1885 to 1886 as manufacturing tinsmiths, lamp makers, coppersmiths, gas fitters, bell hangers and workers in sheet iron, zinc and brass at street numbers 7, 9 and 11 Carlton Court, Bridge St Glasgow. An additional address is at 37 Cavendish St Glasgow listed for 1910, and also at Pollokshaws Road. The writer assumes the company must have moved sometime between 1886 & 1910 to these addresses. The writer at this time cannot ascertain any more historical information regarding the company or its founder, however, lamps made by RC Murray are now collector's items commanding significant sale prices on many auction websites.A significant item used in the marine industry on many ships, the company made kerosene lamps for other industries as well and was a well-known company in the early part of the 20th century.Marine kerosene ships lamp, round copper handle on top and side top is hinged with catch and lever, protruding near top.Inscribed "RC Murray and Co Limited" "Pollokshaws Road Glasgow S.1." flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, lamp, lantern, brass lamp, nautical object -

Caul associated with Private R.P Holbery, World War I
Label written by Dr Frank Forster documents that this item belonged to Private RP Holbery, who carried the caul as a good luck charm when he served in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) during WWI. Refer to supplementary file for War Records at Cat no: 34 A caul is a small slightly yellow coloured membrane that can cover the newborn baby's face. After birth, the caul can be removed and laid on a piece of paper to dry. Superstitions regarding cauls are very ancient, and believers in superstition thought that babies born with a caul would never drown. They were traditionally sold to sailors to bring good luck. Lawyers or advocates in the legal profession would buy cauls as they believed it would confer the "gift of the gab". Cauls were also carried by servicemen during the early part of the 20th Century. World War I pushed up the price of cauls. They were often carried in silver cases engraved with commemorative inscriptions. Other names used for a caul are "Coif", "Sillie", "How" (Hood) or "Hallihoo" (Holy Hood).Caul, consisting of yellowed membrane in two pieces. Caul has tissue paper like appearance and is folded upon itself.world war i -

Map, H.B. Foot, Plan of the Brighton Estate containing 5120 acres, first special survey at Port Phillip, c. 1842
This plan records the Brighton Estate, also known as Dendy's Special Survey. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave him the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the low price of £1 per acre for 5120 acres. Dendy appointed Jonathan Binns Were, as his agent, who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Their Brighton Estate was first surveyed by T. S. Townsend in May 1841 and was re-surveyed by Robert Hoddle. Dendy and Were were making plans to sell the land and advertised a 30-guinea prize for the best subdivision which was to be divided into a village, marine residences, suburban and cultivation allotments, with the remainder being divided into country sections. The competition was won by H.B. Foot, who planned the village around a reserve and crescents and a 'green belt' forming the town boundary. brighton estate, dendy's special survey, special survey, henry dendy, jonathan binns were, w.b. were, survey, plan, map, brighton, george ward cole, baker's lithographer, hibernian, subdivision, town planning, cartographic material, h.b. foot -

Domestic object - Butter packet - Eskdale and Tallangatta Butter Factories, 1890s
Tallangatta Butter Factory The Tallangatta Butter Factory and Creamery Co. Ltd was established as a co-operative with application for shares closing on 19 December 1891. It was registered in February 1892 and notified in the Victorian Government Gazette. It was one of the first north eastern Victoria dairy co-operatives. The Upper Murray and Mitta Herald on Thursday 23 March 1905 recorded that advice had been received of the sale in London of a shipment of 191 boxes of sent via India. The sale fetched a price at 105 shillings per cwt (hundredweight). When the township of Tallangatta was moved due to the raising of the Hume Weir in 1956, a new factory was built at the new location. It continued to operate until 1959 when it merged with the Kiewa Butter Factory to become the North Eastern Dairy Company. In 1985 this organisation was taken over by the Murray Goulburn Co-operative Eskdale Butter Company. After the selling of shares to form a co-operative, The Eskdale Butter Factory was officially opened on Saturday 26 November 1904. It closed after a merger with Murray Goulburn in 1969.This item is representative of the dairy industry in North East Victoria.2 wrappers for butter produced in North East Victoria by the Tallangatta Butter Factory and the Eskdale Butter Factory and Creamery. The fact that the school had first operated temporarily in a leased building, and on a half-time basis with SS2745 Jarrahmond, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local inhabitants as they saw their offspring commence their education under the guidance of HT Campbell Mackay. However he remained in charge only until 12th of May 1886. The second HT, John Rowe, served until 1908. On 30th of June 1887, a portable room was provided; it being brought to the area by schooner.
