The Progressive Political League was formed in 1891 after the 1890 Maritime Workers Strike; it subsequently became the Australian Labor Party. The PPL is also contemporaneous with the defeat of the Shearer's Strike (1891). Its platform included "electoral reform, reform of the labour laws, social reform and supported Federation on a ‘democratic basis’." (Anarchist Age 2008). Clyde Cameron was Minister for Labour in the Whitlam government and sacked in 1975. He was in parliament from 1949 until his resignation in 1980. The strike took place in 1891 when pastoralists wanted to reduce shearers' wages and bring in non-union workers at lower rates. The author, Julian Stuart, was one of the leaders of the shearers' strike and was jailed for three years with hard labour.
