This booklet tells the story of the bell from the "S. S. Santhia" and how it came to Bogong State School, Victoria. "Santhia" belonged to the British India Line. On 6th November 1943 she was in service as a troopship when she caught fire and capsized at No. 3 Garden Reach Jetty, Calcutta. Due to the additional weight of water pumped into her to extinguish the fire, "Santhia" heeled over and remained in the mud of the River Hooghly until a successful salvage was completed in January 1946. The salvage operation was carried out by Captain J. P. Williams of Melbourne and his team of Australian divers nine and a half months after the commencement of operations. "Santhia" was the sixty seventh ship salvaged by Captain Williams. "Santhia's" Bell was presented by Captain Williams to Mr G.G. Jobbins, Chairman of Commissioners for installation at Bogong State School. The ceremony of presenting the bell took place on 21st February 1947. The bell bears the following inscription:- "Presented to G.G.Jobbins, Esq., Chairman, State Electricity Commission, by Captain J.P. Williams for Bogong School, on December 6th, 1946. This bell was recovered from the wreck of the "S.S.Santhia" sunk in the Hooghly River, Calcutta, and raised by an Australian salvage party."This booklet is significant because it documents an unusual event linking Bogong State School to a World War II salvage operation.A booklet consisting of images and text which tells the story of S.S. In 1950, the "Project Competition - Australia as a Member of the British Commonwealth of Nations" was conducted. Bogong State School was awarded a First Prize in the competition. The prize being 10 pounds to be used to purchase books for the school library on Empire subjects. Bogong is a local town established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. This letter is significant in that it shows that the British Empire was very relevant to the population at the time and being promoted in schools.Cream decorated frame with glass front and paper backing. Australian Natives' Association was a mutual society founded in Melbourne in April 1871. The last branch closed in 2007 in Western Australia. The Australian - American Association of Victoria was formed in the 1940s for the betterment of relations between Australia and the USA including that in the area of education. The Bogong State School entered many competitions successfully. The Australian Natives' Association supported social well-being which, in this case, involved presenting a book to the Bogong State School in 1949 and 2. This book would have been used for physical education for schools all over Victoria from 1946 onwards. It has a very good foward by HP Kelly MB BS Medical Inspector of Schools stating the importance of pyshical movement and sport which is still trying to be installed into children today! This book cover all ages of children from infants to sixteen year olds. This book has social and historical significance because it shows the games, sorts, exercises, and gymnastics, swimming, dancing and rhymes that were done in the mid 20th century. This shows that teachers were aware of the importance of PE during this time. Many of these principles are still being taught today and with so many children in Victoria being obese through lack of exercise, this is very topical book! The Tawonga South Tennis Club commenced in 1946 and was situated on the last property on the riverside before the Tawonga South bridge where there was also a kiosk. Tennis was very popular in the Kiewa Valley with the influx of players available from the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In the Bogong-Tawonga Tennis Association there were three Bogong teams - Cope, McKay and Beauty with the other teams from Tawonga called Wanderers, Rovers, Pines and South Tawonga. Reported in the SEC magazine, Oct--Nov. 1946 Page 45:- "The membership now totals eighty, and both Bogong courts are in continuous use during week-ends and in the evenings and early mornings." There were clubs & teams in Bogong, Mt Beauty and Tawonga. This trophy indicates that there was a tennis association at Tawonga South in 1950. In 1945 the Tawonga South school was set up to serve the children of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria employees. The school was extended from one room to two in 1955 to avoid congestion. This would indicate that the population would have been sufficient for a tennis club as well. In the SEC Magazine 1946 Page 45:- "South Tawonga Tennis Club has arranged social functions to raise funds, and working bees are busy on the erection of a tennis court. The president is Mr. N. Mt Beauty HES school was created for the children of the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria who were constructing the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme at the head of the Kiewa Valley at the new town of Mount Beauty. Mt Beauty School consisted of Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School 1948-1964 before it was split into the current (2023) Mt Beauty Primary School and Mt Beauty High School. See. Trophies were awarded to recognise achievements in many areas of the school curriculum. Sir Kenneth George Luke (1896-1971) was a successful businessman and VFL football administrator. As more and more holiday makers retire to a small but friendly region(Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty) the increase in visitor numbers will affect the local rural bush scene more and more. The changes that will occur (in time) can be measured against the scenes presented in this video. These films were used c1940s and 1950s to educate students in Bogong and Mt Beauty Primary Schools. The visual experience enabled all students to see the same picture as the teacher read out the caption. Bogong and Mt Beauty Primary Schools are in the Kiewa Valley established as a result of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Bogong United Church began in Bogong Village under a non-resident Methodist in the year 1946 as a measure of convenience. The book was produced for a day of celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of the Church. In 1956 the Bogong United Church met for worship in Bogong, Mongan's Bridge, Mt Beauty and Tawonga and for Fellowship & Service there were 7 different groups mostly meeting in Mt Beauty. Minister at the time was Rev. John Goodluck, resident at 18 Kiewa Crescent, Mt Beauty.The Bogong United Church celebrated 10 years of co-operation with the Methodist and Presbyterian churches and was one of the first churches to do so. It is also significant because it also states the problems the church is facing in 1956: "Dependency on outside support. Inadequacy in state school visits. Extension on Fellowship visitation. Skippy and Toni St Elmo were responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting a love of skiing. They left Melbourne in 1945 and settled at Falls Creek and moved into the first building constructed of corrugated iron and timber at Falls Creek in 1946. They were Falls Creek’s first workers with Toni employed by the State Electricity Commission to record weather-related data up to the construction of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. In 1957, Toni was involved in building the first rope tow called Nissen on the same route as the Summit Quad. He also established the Nissen Ski School with ski instructor Milan Kovacic and was involved in the building of the resort’s first ski club Bogong in 1949. Toni taught Skippy to ski and she practised on the High Plains where she and her husband lived. Skippy St Elmo won many ski races during the 1950’s and represented Australia in New Zealand.Skippy and Toni St Elmo were pioneers of the Falls Creek area, promoting local ski sports and tourism. The played an important role in opening up the Falls Creek area and developing its sporting potential by establishing the first ski school, ski lifts and early lodge facilities. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.This group of photographs are a pictorial record of the early history of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the people who worked in the background supplying administrative support and the workers and their families. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. This folder contains the official Inspector's reports for House Creek School Number 2266. Inspections were carried out every six months for all Victorian Government Schools. On 8th October 1879 Mathew Parnaby and others applied for the establishment of a school, between Huon and House Creeks, about four miles southwest of Wodonga. The District Inspector approved and Albert Schlink offered two acres of freehold land as a site, four chains from the southeast corner of Allotment Eight, Section 10, of the Parish of Wodonga in the County of Bogong. A portable classroom, 22ft x14ft, with quarters was erected at a total cost of £192, and SS2266 opened on 1st of June 1880 with Edwin Davis as Head Teacher. In 1883 the average attendance ranged between 12 and 20. Both school and quarters fell into a very bad state of repair. Temporarily closed in 1894, the school reopened as a result of a petition by Ferdinand Godde and others. By 1902 the school had a nett enrolment of 37, the grounds had been fenced, and a shelter shed erected by local effort. By 1907 the nett enrolment had risen to 45 with an average attendance of 37. Ferdinand V. Godde served as Correspondent of the Committee in 1911. House Creek was unstaffed in February 1917 and closed on 8th of November 1917. It reopened on 4th August 1921, but with a nett enrolment of 6, closed on the 24th July 1926. The building was sold for removal. Many of the reports in this Register were written and signed by Henry Finch Rix. He was a pioneer of the Victorian School Inspection System and from 1884 to 1887 worked as a Chief Inspector in the Beechworth Education District. He had previously played with the Carlton Football Club for one season. Henry Rix was a highly regarded educator and a staunch advocate of the establishment of school libraries to teach children of "the rich stores of profitable pleasure to be found in books."This item is significant because it documents progress and recommendations for students at an early government primary school in the Wodonga district.A large bound folder of printed forms. Mavis Grace Lindsay born in 1917 and married Toni St. Elmo in Ballarat on 18 December 1944. She was known as “Skippy” from childhood. They moved from Melbourne in 1945 and spent the year living in Wallace’s Hut. Toni was employed by the State Electricity Commission to record weather-related data. They were to become responsible for early developments at the Falls Creek resort and for promoting a love of skiing. Toni taught Skippy to ski and she practised on the High Plains where she and her husband lived. Toni entering her in the first club championships held by the Bogong Ski Club at Rocky Valley, which he had established. Skippy St Elmo won many ski races during the 1950s and represented Australia in New Zealand. In 1947, the first ski lodge was built by six SEC employees including Toni St Elmo. The lodge was named “Skyline”. In 1957, Toni was involved in building the first rope tow at Falls Creek, called Nissen. He also established the Nissen Ski School. In 1949, Skippy won the Downhill and Combined State Championship held at Mt Buller. In 1950, Skippy was selected to compete in New Zealand with the Victorian team. Skippy trained with the men at the Bogong Ski Club which became a talking point in 1953 when the Albury Ski Club held an Open Championship and Skippy won in the Giant Slalom and Downhill. She went on to win many more races. In 1960, Skippy and Toni said farewell to Falls Creek. Skippy passed away in Queensland in July 2005 and Toni passed away in September of the same year.
