Sunshine and District Historical Society IncorporatedPhotograph - Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church 12 Larkspur Drive St. Albans 1999 Photographs, Sunshine Advocate, 10th November 1999
... ...Chris Scott...Albans 1999 Photographs Sunshine Advocate Chris Scott ...These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, feature Colin Phillips, a long serving parishioner of the Sunshine Baptist movement at a function at the Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church located at 12 Larkspur Drive, St. Albans. The Sunshine - St Albans Baptist Church has its origins in the early Baptist movement in Sunshine. A Baptist congregation was established in Sunshine in 1919, and over time the church developed an outreach ministry into the growing suburb of St Albans. A congregation was established there and began meeting in a newly built manse/chapel in 1968. As the St Albans congregation expanded, a new church building was opened in 1972. The following year, in 1973, the original Sunshine Baptist Church building was sold and the Sunshine and St Albans congregations formally merged to become the Sunshine-St Albans Baptist Church. The church continued to evolve alongside the changing demographics of Melbourne's western suburbs. In 2001, a Vietnamese congregation was established as part of the church's ministry, and in 2004 the Western Region Chinese Christian Church commenced worship services in the church building. In 2007, the Chinese congregation formally joined the church, reflecting its increasingly multicultural character. To acknowledge this development, the church adopted the name Western New Community Baptist Church. The Sunshine-St Albans Baptist Church is significant for its association with the growth of Baptist worship in Melbourne's western suburbs and its role in serving the expanding communities of Sunshine and St Albans. The church reflects the area's post-war population growth and cultural diversity, demonstrating how local religious institutions adapted to meet the needs of successive migrant communities. Its later transformation into the multicultural Western New Community Baptist Church illustrates the changing social and cultural character of Melbourne's west.7737.01 - Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church 12 Larkspur Drive St. Albans 1999 Photographs (Advocate 624).JPG 7737.02 - Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church 12 Larkspur Drive St. Albans 1999 Photographs (Advocate 624).JPG 7737.03 - Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church 12 Larkspur Drive St. Albans 1999 Photographs (Advocate 624).JPG 7737.04 - Sunshine - St. Albans Baptist Church 12 Larkspur Drive St. Albans 1999 Photographs (Advocate 624).JPGsunshine - st. albans baptist church, larkspur drive, st. albans -

The Resin Plant produces industrial resins, which are a key ingredient used in the manufacture of paints, coatings, varnishes, inks, and other surface-finishing products. Resins act as the binder that holds pigment particles together and helps coatings adhere to surfaces. The Sunshine North site had its origins as the Courtaulds Coatings plant, which manufactured materials for the paints and coatings industry. When AKZO Nobel opened the new $4 million resin plant in 1999, it modernised and expanded the production of these chemical resins for use in both Australian and international coating products. The investment represented a significant modernisation of the plant and reinforced Sunshine North's continuing importance as a centre for industrial manufacturing in Melbourne's western suburbs.7689.01 - AKZO Nobel Resin Plant Opening 51 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1999 Photographs (Advocate 217).JPG 7689.02 - AKZO Nobel Resin Plant Opening 51 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1999 Photographs (Advocate 217).JPG 7689.03 - AKZO Nobel Resin Plant Opening 51 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1999 Photographs (Advocate 217).JPG 7689.04 - AKZO Nobel Resin Plant Opening 51 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1999 Photographs (Advocate 217).JPG 7689.05 - AKZO Nobel Resin Plant Opening 51 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1999 Photographs (Advocate 217).JPGakzo nobel, courtaulds coatings, mcintyre road, sunshine north -

The Westend Entertainment Centre, located within the Westend complex on McIntyre Road, Sunshine North, occupied part of the former Wunderlich factory site. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the former industrial complex was redeveloped to accommodate entertainment, hospitality, retail, and commercial activities, including the West End Hotel, West End Nite Club, market stalls, and the entertainment centre. The venue became a local destination for concerts and community events, reflecting the transition of Sunshine North from a manufacturing centre to a diverse commercial and recreational precinct. The Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape Sunshine’s understanding of its developing commercial district.
