The Herbel Comet Mine and the New Golden Fleece Gold Mine were situated in the Diamond Hill area. In 1912, (19th September) the 'Bendigo Advertiser' reported that Mr. Rankin had an option to purchase the Herbel Comet mine, which adjoined the New Golden Fleece Mine on the south side. Constructed of hand-made bricks set in a concrete mortar, this foundation has been modified or repaired with concrete at its northern end. The upper course of bricks has been removed, exposing long sections of 2-inch diameter mounting bolts. Small brick foundations lie either side of the large foundation, the western one capped with thick concrete. Two boiler depressions are visible to the west of the engine foundations. 5 metres east, at ground-level, is a concrete engine foundation with protruding 1¼ inch mounting bolts. Running east from this foundation is a line of timber battery stumps set in rough concrete footings. The stumps are grouped in four sets, representing the site of a 20-head battery. A remnant of a large mullock heap lies south of the engine foundations, on Crown land. The foundations have been modified and are partially hidden by trees. Access is also restricted by boundary fences. Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854 and by 1861, 1,200,000 ounces of gold had been extracted from the site. The first claim was bought for 80 pounds by Prussian immigrant Christopher Ballerstedt and his son Theodore. Christopher Ballerstedt was nicknamed the "Father of the Hill" and was the first to prove that gold reefs extended below the surface. His 200-foot plus mine shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners, and were instrumental in Bendigo becoming the world's deepest and richest goldfield. The site still features relics of nineteenth century mining including quartz crushing machinery and the foundations of George Lansell’s 180 mine. These features are characteristic of Bendigo’s mining history and represent two prominent nineteenth century miners, Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell, who held important roles in the development of Bendigo. Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are registered as a site of significance. The site is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to Victoria. The mines represent the symbolic heart of Bendigo’s gold mining history and the importance that mining played in wealth creation and the development of Victoria. The diggings reserve is accessed from the rear of Albert Richardson Reserve located on Marong Road. The site has steep and unformed paths and is closed to the public at dusk. It is important to stay to the paths to avoid the diggings. Interpretive signs help visitors to appreciate the importance of the site and the remaining relics of Bendigo’s mining history. The New Chum Railway Reserve was situated near Breen Street, Golden Square: Latitude & Longitude (WGS84): 36° 46' 20'' South , 144° 15' 57'' East Latitude & Longitude (decimal): -36.77235,144.26581. The New Chum Railway Reserve Gold Mine (1878-1910) was situated beside the railway line at Golden Square. It ultimately had a depth of 4318 feet and approximately 114,681 ounces of gold were taken from it. It was the deepest mine in the world at one stage but the record depth was eventually claimed by the Victoria Quartz, ( 4593 feet) also on the New Chum reef line. Each year The Australian Insitutue of Mining Engineers held a meeting in an important mining district or township. In 1906, via the good offices of David Ham an invitation was extended to the Ballarat students to take part in a trip to Broken Hill, via Wallaroo and Moonta, and Port Pirie. They left the Ballarat station on Saturday May 19, 1906 aboard the Adelaide Express. The Ballarat party consisted of David Ham (Ballarat School of Mines Council Member); staff members Frederick J. Martell, A.D. Gilchrist, John Sutherland, A.E.C. Kerr, A. Garard and E.J. McConnon. The attending students were W.P. Avery, M. Boyer, M.H. Bade, E. Booth, E. Crossly, A. Cooper, G.H. Davenport, W.E. Figgis, R. Galloway, C. Hesselmann, H. Hawkesworth, M. McCallum, H.F. Owen, W. Pearce, W. Sayer, J. Sutherand, Arthur E. Tandy and H.C. Valentine. Students were also present from the Working Men's College (later RMIT), Bairnsdale School of Mines, Melbourne University and the Bendigo School of Mines. Members of Australian Institute of Mining Engineers and students from the Ballarat School of Mines at the Central Mine, Broken Hill. Kenneth Mickle was educated at Queen's College, St Kilda, and after qualifying as a metallurgist, studied at the Melbourne University for three years. There he won the Grimwade Prize and other distinctions. At the outbreak of World War I he held a responsible position on the Burmah mines. He served in the British Army with the Royal Garrison Artillery and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) for his leadership and gallantry. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first School of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. 22 page booklet titles 'The Ballarat School of Mines: A Statement of the Objects and Resources of the School.' A personal account of Sir Lindesay Clark, mining engineer. Clark records his early association with Gold Mines of Australia Limited and the formation of Western Mining Corporation Limited. He was appointed WMC's first Technical Managing Director. After WW2 Lindesay led the re-establishment and expansion of gold mining operations within the WMC-GMA Group at centers such as Kalgoorlie, Norseman, Reedy's, Coolgardie and Bullfinch in Western Australia, and Woods Point and Newstead in Victoria. In 1952 Lindesay became chairman of WMC. Lindesay had first-hand knowledge of working conditions below ground and living conditions above. "Built on Gold.
