Henry Hopwood who founded Echuca in 1853, made the following charges for the use of his punt across the Murray River utiliising his own tokens. This is a photograph showing part of the display in the exhibition area of the Port of Echuca. The exhibit was on the wharf in the cargo shed. It was the beginning of the Wharf's life as a tourist attraction. This photograph, taken in the late 1970-1980s, shows the historic wharf in the Port of Echuca tourist area. The wharf includes the rail siding, with locomotive and carriages , and the wharf with historic equipment used when the paddle boats were flourishing along the Murray river.The historic Port of Echuca wharf includes the wharf and the rail siding that collected goods from the paddle boats and transported the goods to Melbourne and other locations. This photo shows the Bond Store and the Star Hotel before they were restored to become focal points of the Port of Echuca tourist precinct. The City of Echuca purchased the panel beaters in 1972 and commenced restoration opening to the public in 1974 where the restored wharf and the Bond store were the only tourist attractions of the Port of Echuca. In 1973 the Council purchased the house and it became The Star Hotel and added to the Port of Echuca tourist precinct.The Bond Store and The Bridge Hotel were the first brick buildings in Henry Hopwood's Echuca. The bricks being made locally.The Bond Store was erected in 1859 as a store to protect goods from the weather. In 1867 Joseph Saloman purchased James Shackell's residence and converted it into a hotel. It was licensed until 1897, being a very popular hotel for workers on the wharf especially with its underground bar, 'The Shades'. Later it was used as a private residence, boarding house and an office before being restored by the City of Echuca, as The Star Hotel. During restoration the underground bar was re-discovered. Undergrounding of the power lines took place in September 1982. Relates to "before" shots P000159, P000161, P000163 and "after" shots P000160, P000162, P000164. Interview with Helen Coulson, 27.09.1984The power lines were put under ground for the filming of "All the Rivers Run" which began in October 1982. The Port area was returned to look like it would have been in the 1870s. The P.S Adelaide was launched on 21st July 1866. It was owned by J.G.Grassie from Poon Boon Station and the Officer Family of Murray Downs Station Swan Hill. The Adelaide was named after the niece of the Officer Bros, Adelaide Blackwood. The shipwright who built her was George Linklater. The Adelaide brought wool and passengers from the wool stations on the Murray and Darling Rivers down to the Echuca Wharf. In 1872 she was sold to David Blair & Sons. She was used to bring timber from the Barmah Forest to the Echuca Wharf. She did this work for the next 80 years. In 1953 she was tied up near the Mill and left. In 1958 she went to Paringa South Australia to work in the sawmill industry again. In 1960 the Echuca Apex Club and The Echuca Historical Society raised enough funds to buy the P.S. Adelaide and return her to Echuca. In November 1963 she was lifted out of the water and placed in Hopwood Gardens as this was thought to be a way of preserving her. In 1984 it was decided to return her to the water to resume work as a passenger vessel. In that time the Port of Echuca and the Echuca Wharf had been restored as a Tourist Precinct. This photograph shows the beginning of the task to return her to the river. It took several weeks in March and April 1984. This photograph is of the Port Apprentice Shipwrights, building a small flat bottomed boat, which could be for use on the P.S. Adelaide.The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. The Star Hotel was built in 1863 as a private dwelling, by James Shackell who owned the Bond Store, next door. It was a small house consisting of only a couple of rooms. In 1867 Joseph Salomon bought the house and converted it into a hotel. He built an underground bar to "deal with the peculiarities of the Echuca climate". It was called 'The Shades'. In 1890 Jane Pygall bought the hotel, which was described by the Riverine Herald as having ' three parlours, seven bedrooms, underground bar, kitchen, bathroom, outhouses, small stables, and entrance from two streets." She changed the name to The Esplanade Hotel. In 1890 it was de-licensed along with many hotels in Echuca. It had been a very popular drinking place for all the wharf workers, who continued to to drink illegally in the underground bar. It was then that the escape tunnel to the laneway was built , so the drinkers could escape the Police raids. For many years it was a private dwelling, or an office. In 1973 the City of Echuca bought the Star Hotel and resored it. At the time this photograph was taken it was the main tourist information centre for the Port of Echuca. It now operates as a hotel, serving meals and providing performance opportunities for musicians.The Star Hotel is very significant in Echuca's history due to its proximity to the Echuca Wharf. It was the closest bar to the wharf. Despite Jane Pygall trying to improve the quality of her clientele, the wharf drinkers preferred to drink at The Star Hotel, as the Bridge Hotel catered for more upmarket clientele. After de-licensing in 1897, the workers continued to drink at The Shades Bar and even put in place elaborate strategies to enable them to drink illegally there. The Victorian government built its wharf in 1865, the final section completed in 1876. The Echuca wharf was 1 kilometre in length and was 9 metres above the summer river level. The riverboat trade flourished until the depression of the 1890s and the advancing railways put the paddlesteamers out of business. In 1944, due to a shortage of firewood the railways demolished three-quarters of the wharf. In 1973 a grant from the Vicotrian government enabled restoration of the wharf to begin. It then became the major attraction for the Port of Echuca tourist industry.The wharf area at the Port of Echuca is one of the major parts of this tourist attraction. The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood, founder of Echuca. The building was in disrepair until it was bought by the Port of Echuca and renovated to be turned into part of the Port of Echuca tourist exhibits and was leased out to be run as a restaurant.The Bridge Hotel is of historical and social significance to Echuca as it was built be Echuca's founder Henry Hopwood. The hotel was situated between the 2 rivers, Murray and Campaspe, where Hopwood ran his punt business, charging people and animals to cross the rivers. The hotel accommodated a variety of paying guest from wealthy squatters to salesmen and general workers. The building was purchased by the Port of Echuca to be part of the tourist attraction. It was extensively renovated to bring it back to its former glory. The Bridge hotel played an important role in the TV series "All the Rivers Run". This copy of the original photograph was probably taken in the 1970s when a series of photograph were copied from the La Trobe Collection. Paddlesteamer in picture believed to be P. S. Trafalgar The P. S. Trafalgar was built in Echuca in April 1877 by T. G. McDonald. She was registered to Permewan, Wright & Co. In May 1891-1912. At her launch she was reported to have "iron topsides of plates a quarter inch thick...and wooden planking is used below the 3'6" water line.." She carried cargo up and down the rivers to Echuca Wharf for the Perweman, Wright company, pulling a variety of barges laden with cargo especially wool bales. The Mildura Cultivator described her as the pride of the Permewan fleet. (Parsons, D. Ships of the inland rivers. 1996. p.137). Echuca was the largest inland port in Australia by the end of the 1890s. The first wharf at Echuca was constructed by Melbourne based stock agency Clough &Co. in 1859. The Victorian government built its wharf in 1865, the final section completed in 1876. The Echuca wharf was 1 kilometre in length and was 9 metres above the summer river level. The riverboat trade flourished until the depression of the 1890s and the advancing railways put the paddlesteamers out of business. In 1944, due to a shortage of firewood the railways demolished three-quarters of the wharf. In 1973 a grant from the Vicotrian government enabled restoration of the wharf to begin. It then became the major attraction for the Port of Echuca tourist industry.The wharf area at the Port of Echuca is one of the major parts of this tourist attraction. The wharf consists of the docking platforms for the paddlesteamers and the rail tracks where goods were transported from one means of transport to another at the height of the wool and logging trade. Goods were transported to Melbourne by rail. This is a picture of the Port of Echuca in a high river. There are two large barges and a paddle steamer tied up at the wharf. There is no date or information to reveal when this photograph was taken. The old red gum wharf at the historic Port of Echuca was built to a height to enable work to be carried out in both times of high and low river levels. In this picture there is a considerably low river level, but work still goes on. The stiff legged crane situated on the wharf is to enable easier loading and unloading of the barges and paddle steamers, such as the barge in the picture which is fully loaded. It was very important for the wharf to remain in operation as much as possible for the river men to be able to travel from it to the out lying properties delivering much needed supplies and to bring back into the port the wool clips to be taken to the marketrs in Melbourne.This was their means of earning a living,so work neeed to continue as long as possible.Properties along the Murray River were often isolated from the rest of the world by distance. The river trade bought the towns closer to these people in a manner of speaking. The paddle steamers would deliver much need supplies, as well as take the all important wool bales back into the Port to be loaded onto rail trucks to be taken to the markets in Melbourne or put on steamers to be taken to ports in other countries. There fore it was essential for the Wharf to be in operation for as many months as possible. The wharf standing at 12.5 meters high enabled operations to go ahead in both times of low rivers as well as in floods.black & white photograph of the wharf at the Port of Echuca taken from the southern end looking north. The barge Ada, was built in Echuca in 1899. It was 33 metres in length and 6.9 metres wide and was made from timber and iron. It's design was unique as it was half timber, and iron . It was iron above the water line to prevent the wool bales from getting wet. The Ada was used to carry wool from Sheep Stations on the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers down to Echuca Wharf for distribution around the world. The Permewan Wright, Murray Shipping Company owned the Ada. In the 1930's the Ada was sold to the Evans family who used it to transport timber to it's Echuca sawmill. It was purchased by the Port of Echuca in 1974. The barge Ada is very significant due to the uniqueness of her design. The hull is timber, up to the water line, then iron from the water line up to protect the bales of wool inside, from water damage. The P.S Pevensey has the same design feature. The Ada was generally towed by the Pevensey.
