Cotton bandages associated with midwife Mary Howlett, c. 1866 - 1920

Historical information

Cotton bandages were one of two types of bandage in use during this period. The other type was gauze. These bandages appear to have been made professionally.
The two narrow bandages, (3 and 3.5cm) would have been used to cover hand and finger dressings. The two larger bandages (4 and 5cm) would have been used for arm and foot dressings and applied in a figure of eight. [Helen Johnson, 1998]
