Arundell's Shoe Shop and Dalgety's Agency , centre of High St Charlton, north side c. 1987. Corner of High St and Williams Ave (now John Curtin Drive). Right hand building built by William Williams as a saddlery c. 1910. Arundell's Shoe Shop formerly ANA Boot and Shoe Shop established by John Arundell in 1901. The shop was sold by Vic Arundell in 1980 and closed. Next door was John Watson's Stock & Station Agents which later became Dalgety's. The end shop was the saddlery and then Bullock's grocery 1930's to 1970's. In 1957 became Charlton's first self service store. Became Australian Estates late 1970s. The shops were later demolished to make way for the Traveller's Rest. In 1971 Jim Bannon moved his butcher business from the eastern end of High St to this newly built shop. He sold to Weirs in 1986 who sold to Frank Bourke in 1987. The Old Globe Hotel established 1874, rebuilt c. 1903 and again in 1940 for licensee J. Credlin. East Charlton Hotel built in 1875 by John Flug to replace his original log and bark inn built 1863. The first inn was about 100 metres behind this building and it was Charlton's first commercial building. The hotel was rebuilt by C. Klug in 1891. It was rebuilt as a two storey building in 1925. Charlton's third Post Office. The Charlton Gentleman's Club was established in 1900 by solicitor Ben Green. The original building had a narrow entrance off High St, between Egan & Spain's Grocery Shop and the Central Café. After fire damaged the buildings in the 1970s, the club was extended to its present size. The vacant block next door was formerly Clark's butcher's shop. Part of a series of streetscapes taken for the Charlton Shire in 1987. Charlton club was established in 1900 in a building with a narrow entrance off High Street between Egan and Spain's Grocery shop and the Central Cafe. 1923 Flood, Telegraph Hotel, Armstrong Street, Charlton, Victoria1923 flood - Telegraph Hotel, Armstrong Street Charlton. Obituary: Charlton 100 years ago 18-02-1922 - 24/02/1922. Mr Francis Gilbert Livingstone passed away at Castlemaine on 14th ins. He was a very well known & highly respected old resident of Charlton & Narrewillock. Until October last he held the license of the Telegraph Hotel and was a familiar figure in his wheel chair under the shade trees at land at Narrewillock, where he farmed until failing health compelled him to give up the strenuous work of those early pioneering days, and in 1892 he took the license of the Telegraph Hotel which he retained until recently. Lou's Cafe c. 1987. In the 1930s and early 40's it was Riches Cafe and Billiards Saloon. Sold to Halligan's, Duggans, Jerry Cowell until 1951 when Luths took over the building as a Car and Tractor agency. Next door was Bennett's Shoe Repair Shop which was later a Stock & Station Agency.
