"She added school rooms and a veranda to the back. She was keen on Esperanto, the international language and wanted her pupils to know it. There was an archway over the gate, part of the design being a star, part of the Esperanto sign - and some suitable wording. He died in 1933 and the property passed to his wife and thereafter to their only son Allan Larard Donaldson, born 1917. The house was known as "Goodwood". Kate Amelia Donaldson was a music teacher. William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, it built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. The house was built in 1883, possibly to encourage development of housing on the first urban land subdivision in Surrey Hills, the Windsor Park Estate (in the Windsor Crescent area). This coincided with the opening of the Surrey Hills Railway station. The first occupant was John Brown Nicholson, police magistrate. The foundation stone for St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was laid in 1886 on land donated by Edward Dyer and the first service was preached in January 1887. From 1904 until 1907 it was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. The original church was weatherboard and replaced by a brick one in the Gothic Revival style which was designed by local architect George J V Blackburne, who also designed the Wesleyan School at Surrey Hills. The building was partly funded by donations, profits from a bazaar and concert, and other people donated furnishings. The church had boundaries along Mont Albert Road and St Georges Road. In 1998 the Church was sold and converted into a complex of units. Its current address is 19 St Georges Avenue, Mont Albert. The purpose of this working bee in 1923 was to close up the double gateway, which in earlier times had been used for entry of by horse-drawn vehicles to the church grounds. 'Lugano' was built in 1893 for William Wilson, a prominent stonemason and importer of marble fireplaces. In 1903 it became the home of William Holmes who was Chief Electrical Engineer for the Victorian Railways. He designed the electrification of the Melbourne suburban network. 'Lugano' stayed in the Holmes family until the 1930s. Date is approximate. In 1920 this became the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Moore, whose daughter Mabel Annie married Norman Brodley Carter of Mont Albert. The house was named after 'Glenisla', a western District grazing property located between Hamilton and Horsham on the Henty Highway and on the edge of the Grampians National Park. This was established as a super-fine wool stud in 1860 and was passed down the family until it was sold in 1922. The family transferred from this property to Melbourne. Robert is listed as a grazier in the 1924 electoral roll at Chestnut Street. With him are Victor Cecil listed as a carpenter; Isabella, Mabel Annie and Edgar Gilbert listed as an orchardist. In 2003 the house was extant minus the verandas. This photo may have been taken from the rear of the property. The vacant land was the site of Norman Carter's future home at 21 Everton Grove. Norman Broadley Carter (1899-1984) married Mabel Annie Moore in 1927. Norman was an engineer with a passion for photography. Norman took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s and particularly of events and activities of the Church of England. For many years the house on the left located at 14 Harding Street belonged to the Kenneth Rothwell Culliton and his wife (Fanny) Molly Culliton. The house is located next to the Harding Street Reserve. Ken was an engineer and Molly was an early member of the Surrey Hills Historical Society. Ken was born and died in Surrey Hills. His father Harry Culliton was a well known golfer. His mother Christina Mary Rothwell was the daughter of Thomas Talbot Rothwell, known as a tea merchant and importer; also lived in Surrey Hills. St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was built in 1886 and from 1904 until 1907 was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. As the population increased there was a need for a church in Surrey Hills. This brick church was consecrated in 1922 and replaced the earlier one built in 1907 on the adjacent site in Union Road. The house behind the church at 1 Montrose Street belonged to Mr W B Vine. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original is mounted on card with photo mounts along with 884, 885, 886 and 512. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm. At the edge of the church roof and on the horizon is 'The Knoll' on the corner of Union Road and Wandsworth Road. To the left of this is 297 Mont Albert Road, home of the Michael Parer family and further left is "Quamby", home of the Sherar family. This is easily recognised by the square viewing tower located on the west wing of the house. The Sherar family owned 'Quamby' from 1900 until 1925, when it became Mosgiel Private Hospital. This building dated back to the 1880s and had previously operated as Delany's Hotel and then the Royal Hotel. It was built near the site of the original Delany's Hotel, built in 1856. The Royal Hotel closed in 1921 after the area voted to be a 'dry area' in the local option poll. Tower House Day and Boarding School operated from 1921 until 1932. This was the home of the Offszanka family from 1913; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was a furrier. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. They had at least 4 children: Carl Bernard - b 1909 Marie Eliese - b 1910 Erna Helena - b 1913; d 1996 - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. Bernard George - b 1914; d 1987 (Surrey Hills) - listed at Guildford Road in electoral rolls. The family were associated with Our Holy Redeemer and also donated class photos of the school to the collection. Carl and Ida are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (RC 032-0034). The semi-circular bay window is not original to the house. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. Our property register lists Erna Helena Offszanka as the last member there. She died on 5 May 1996. Members of the Offszanka family lived in this property from its beginnings for more than 70 years. Maitland' was built in 1889 for Thomas Zeplin, who was a Professor of Music. He owned all the land bound by Union Road, Wilson and Montrose Streets and the railway line. 1 Bedford Avenue stayed in family ownership until purchased by Camberwell Council in 1986, initially for a car park. However it was renovated to become part of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. It was opened on 23 November 1990. No 3 Bedford Avenue was built for Thomas Zeplin's daughter and named 'Mervyl' or 'Merryl'. Mrs Brodecky (donor) was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Zeplin. The 2 girls are granddaughters of Thomas Zeplin. Electoral roll information: 1972 & 1977: Albert Vojteck Brodecky, manager, 1 Bedford Avenue. 1977: Ray Nanette Brodecky. There are 2 copies. Thomas had this built for his son and family. The house was occupied by his family, though sometimes rented out. His great-grand-daughter Mrs. A. Brodecky sold to the Camberwell Council in 1986. The photo would have been taken prior to 1913 as Dr Blakie moved across the road to 174 Union Road to a purpose-built home/surgery designed by architect Arthur Plaisted. He practised at 171 Union Road joining or taking over from Dr Percy Liddle in 1905. The property was rented from the Zeplin family who built the house in 1890, which was known as 'Edgeware', and originally owned all the land bound by the railway, Union Road, Wilson Street and Montrose Street. in the 1920s to 1930s. 1906 became the home of Dr James Blakie, surgery was to the left of house. In 1912 Blakie had house built opposite (now Medical Centre). In 1920s-30s 'Edgeware' became Surrey Hills Police Station. Family details: James Blakie was born in New Zealand to a farming family of Scottish origin. He trained at Otago University with additional study at Cambridge. He married Catherine Miller Martin in 1906. Medlow was built in 1889 for Col Cairncross and named 'Willcyrus' after his sons William and Cyril. The Cairncross family was responsible for the planting of many of the trees, some sourced from Canada by one of the Cairncross sons. The date is approximate. The Bull family lived at 'Medlow' at 42 Warrigal Road, Surrey Hills from 1911. Dr Richard Bull graduated MD, BS in 1904. He was a lecturer in bacteriology during WW1 and developed typhoid vaccines. He was President of the British Medical Association (BMA), forerunner to the AMA, in 1926. Dr Bull's wife Catherine (nee Perrier) was a lover and patron of music and the arts. Their daughter Norma was a well-known artist. Mrs Bull was a great lover of music and the arts and made 'Medlow' available for the advance of these causes. Date is approximate. House was built in 1910 and has been demolished. The woman on the verandah is probably Mrs P Falconer, Ron Falconer's mother. Her full name was Emily Victoria Aird (1884-1957), daughter of James Bromich Aird and Sarah Ann (nee Edwards). She married Patrick Henry Falconer on 11 December 1907 in Blackburn. The Falconer family lived in Albert Crescent for many years. Listed in electoral rolls in 1916 through to the 1950s. By 1963 the family were at 33 Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills. Emily and Patrick Henry Falconer had 4 children: Ronald Keith (b1908); Hilda Irene (b 1910); Harold Leslie (b 1913) and Hilah (b 1915).
