The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. He transformed his business into a co-operative, with the name, ‘Fletcher Jones and Staff’ registered in 1947. Card, Business, Possibly 1880s
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This business card advertised the business of Charles Hider who had a stationery and book shop in Liebig Street from the 1860s to the 1880s. (63 Liebig Street today). He also sold photographs and pictures, picture frames, pianos and other musical instruments and homeopathic medicines and was an agent for local newspapers and overseas magazines. The stamp on one side of the card shows Liebig Street spelled ‘Liebeg’, suggesting that the stamp was perhaps made in the 1860s when ‘Liebeg’ was the common spelling of the street name. Charles Hider’s brother James also had a book and stationery store in Warrnambool in Timor Street in the 19th century. This card is of considerable interest as it belonged to Charles Hider, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century. It also shows the type of business card used in the 19th century. This is a small business card from Charles Hider, a 19th century Warrnambool bookseller and stationer. It is buff-coloured on one side with a stamp of Charles Hider on a white background and a sketch of a sprig of daisies with foliage. The flowers are coloured red, white and green. This book is of particular interest to Warrnambool as several branches of the Gladman family settled in the Warrnambool area. It will therefore be of particular interest to researchers. It is also a good example of a well-researched and well-written family history. This is a soft cover book of 374 pages. Slides, Box of Glass Slides Capital Theatre, 1940s
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These glass slides were made to be used at interval time at the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. The Capitol Theatre (originally the Warrnambool Theatre) was erected in 1930 on the site occupied by the Hotel Mansions which included a Palais de Danse and a Mansions Theatre. All were destroyed by fire in 1929. The Capitol Theatre was built in the Spanish Mission style and is one of the few surviving Spanish Mission style theatres in Victoria. However the interior was largely altered in 1994 when the Capitol was converted into a three-screen complex. But some decorative features of the old interior were kept and these included the original proscenium. Stan Stevens and his family were associated with the Capitol Theatre management for many years from 1972. The Capitol Theatre still operates today. These slides are of considerable importance as they are a wonderful example of picture theatre-going in the 1940s and 50s when slides were shown during the interval times and many of these were locally made. The reason for showing the words of songs is not known but it is presumed they had sing-a-longs during the intervals, possibly to boost morale during the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular interest and feature such local businesses as the Woollen Mill, Sungold Dairies, E.A. Wright Motors and Alex Donaldson Timber and Hardware Supplies. These are small square glass slides (numbered1 to 92) which were shown in the 1940s at the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool at interval time (advertisements, words of songs etc). Some of the slides have been professionally produced and some, especially the words of songs, have been hand-made and handwritten or typed. Some are in colour and some are blank. In others the contents have been obscured or obliterated. Most of the slides have been taped around the edges and some have more sturdy frames made of tape. capitol theatre, warrnambool, stan stevens -

Document, Shire of Warrnambool Fire - Washing-Bridge 1882, 1882
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This notice relates to the prohibition of lighting fires, drying clothes or bringing inflamable material near any of the bridges in the shire. Offenders will be prosecuted. With a date of 1882 and the fact that bridges were mostly made of wood, it would have been of concern that the destruction of bridges was not only of great inconvenience but also of considerable expense. But the reality of bridges providing shelter and warmth in the colder months and the ensuring fires and burnt bridges has more than likely precipitated this notice. J W Crawley was shire engineer from 1876 until 1895 and for 10 of those years he trained his son J W Crawley who succeeded his father and served in the position for 40 years. He in turn was succeeded by his son Rolf Crawley in 1935. In 1963 the bridge over the Hopkins Falls at Wangoom was named the Crawley bridge in honour of service to the Shire of Warrnambool by members of the Crawley family. The Shire of Warrnambool was proclaimed in 1863 and covered an area of over 600 square miles. Much of it was incorporated into the Moyne Shire in the 1990's with some being included into the boundaries of City of Warrnambool. This banner is an interesting piece of history. It shows the issues confronting early settlers such as shelter and the chores of daily life but also the importance placed on infrastructure which was slowly taking place around the district. It was in the era of drainage and roadworks and hence bridges were an important part of that infrastructure. The name J W Crawley is one of importance in the Warrnambool district for his service over many years. Rectangular piece of cloth printed in black ink. Book, Worsted Preparing & Spinning, 1923
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This book is a technical book that was originally from the Wendouree Woollen Mills but latterly was part of a collection of books owned by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. The Wendouree Woollen Mills in Ballarat began in 1870 as a flour mill and became the Doveton Woollen Mill in 1877. In 1918 it became the Myer Woollen Mill (Myer Emporium ownership) and in the 1920s it was a knitting mill. After Myer sold the mill it was known as Wendouree Woollen Mill but it closed in 1975. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in Harris Street, Warrnambool was established in 1910 on the site of an earlier woollen mill destroyed by fire in 1882. It was a successful business for many years and closed in 2000 after 90 years of operations but by that time it had been bought by successive companies including the multinational company Dunlop. In 1968 the Warrnambool Woollen Mills (Dunlop era) purchased Wendouree Woollen Mills and transferred much of its operations to Warrnambool until the Ballarat mill was closed in 1975. This explains why a Wendouree Woollen Mill book was in the Warrnambool Woollen Mill building when it closed. This book is of some interest as a good example of technical books produced in the early 1920s. It would have been well-used by woollen mills workers and foremen at the time. It is also of interest as it comes from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and so it is a memento of a most important and influential business in Warrnambool in the 20th century. A great number of local people were employed at this mill over the years and it enjoyed for many years a national reputation for quality products. This is a hard cover book with a dark blue cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The title of the book is printed in an ornate script and is underlined with two gold lines. The book has 277 pages commencing with page 273 as the book is Volume Two of this title. The book, about wool combing was written by Fred Bradbury. It has a Preface, a Contents page and fifteen chapters commencing with Chapter 21 and ending with Chapter 35, an Index and several pages of advertisements for other technical books. The book has several black and white photographs of machinery and illustrations and sketches demonstrating mechanical and technical processes. The book has some small stains on the front cover.Front Cover: ‘Worsted Preparing and Spinning (Wool Combing) by Fred Bradbury’ Spine: ‘Worsted Preparing and Spinning, Vol11- Bradbury – F.King & Sons Ld., Halifax, England’. Document - Minutes Books, Woollen Mills 1909- 1923 1933-1945, C 1909 C 1933-1945
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...The minutes book of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill are an important record of the beginnings of one of Warrnambool's major industries for close to one hundred years. They record the struggle in the early days of 1909 and 1910 to raise the capital. Also mentioned is the support which had been given by local people of small means who were prepared to back the enterprise while those with financial means had been rather more reserved. Apart from a Mr Vidler all the initial directors were initially working in an honorary capacity. They lamented the fact that local banks held half a million pounds on fixed interest so there was no shortage of money. The first directors were appointed in March 1909 : Jas. Worland, W H Philpott, G S Mackay, E H Price, S McDonald, J C Beeching, W Rogers ,J Marfell, J Deany, Jas Duirs, Jas. Ponting, H Jessen, S Nettleton, J Blain, J Gooden, Drs. Holmes, Henderson and Powell. Mr J E Bennett was secured as first manager of the mill in 1910 Over the ten year period of this book there is much discussion on possible returns and share prices as well as decisions relating to the operation of and production from the mill. Within four years they were using more yarn than they were producing. Electricity was connected around 1914 and by 1915 shareholders were receiving eight percent return on their investment and were also contributing to the first world War effort by supplying blankets. Assets continued to accumulate and building was also continued with sandstone being quarried from the site and rain water tanks and asphalt floors installed, all contributing to savings. By 1917 The Warrnambool Woollen Mill was considered to be one of the states best investments and it continued to prosper through the years. The second minutes book likewise records similar events and circumstances for the period 1933-1945. This like wise is an interesting period, covering the period of the second World War. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. These minutes books hold an important information regarding the establishment and early operation of one of Warrnambool's major industries. The mill itself has strong connection to the Warrnambool community and many of the names mentioned as directors and shareholders have held positions within the community as businessmen and city officials. These minutes add another dimension to their contribution to Warrnambool..1Navy blue hard card cover with cloth spine. Artefact, Lamson's Rapid Wire Cash Carrier, Youngers, C Early 20th century
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...Lamson was established in Australia in 1898 with the idea for a store security money handling system being patented in the latter part of the 19th century. The practise of taking money from the counter and customer to the cashier was time consuming and cumbersome. Some bright ideas were employed including tying the money and dockets in a hankerchief and throwing it to the cashier. The first attempt to improve this was the ball system where a ball containing the cash was rolled to the cashier on an elevated track. The rapid wire system superseded this in the early 1900's and for the next 50 years it became a popular part of money handling in stores around Australia. This particular Lamson's cash carrier was installed in Youngers department store which was situated in Liebig Street. The success of Youngers store was partly responsible for the shift to Liebig St as the main commercial district. The Warrnambool Standard reported in 1901 that Younger and Co would operate on a wholly cash basis replacing incidental trades of goods such as potatoes and other farm produce. This item has strong social and historical significance. Apart from having strong links to one of Warrnambool's largest and longest running businesses, the object itself is of considerable interest with thousands of the original ball systems and Rapid Wire cash carriers being in use around the world. Book, A Matter of Record, 2003
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This book gives the history of the Public Record Office, Victoria. It was written by Professor Bill Russell and produced in 2003. The research by Charlie Farrugia that enabled the book to be written was carried out entirely using the Public Record Office archives. The book documents the 1903 beginnings of the Public Record Office from a small collection in the possession of the Melbourne Public Library through to the important 1973 Victorian Public Records Act to the present day institution at North Melbourne. The Melbourne Public Library, the Historical Society of Victoria and the History School of the University of Melbourne were early contributors to the preservation of Victoria’s archives. This book is in the library of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and is an important reference for us in regard to the history of archival preservation of historical documents in our State. In addition we are a Place of Deposit for historical records that are surplus to the requirements of the Public Record Office of Victoria and that concern more directly the history of Warrnambool and district. Many local Warrnambool and district residents use the facilities at the Public Record Office at North Melbourne and the link between that institution and Warrnambool historical groups is important. This is a hard cover book of 227 pages. The cover is black with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover is dark red with printed material about the author and the book’s contents. The front of the dust cover has an illustration of four Victorian Railways ledgers in sepia tones and the back of the dust cover has a small illustration in brown and white of a heritage label. The book has a Contents page, an Acknowledgement page, a Foreword, an Introduction, eight chapters, Appendices, Notes and References and an Index. ... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This is a souvenir pennant of the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool, named after the City of Warrnambool in Victoria. This ship was the second of that name. The first H. M.A.S. Warrnambool, launched in 1941, was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes commissioned by the Australian Government. It was involved in mine clearance work in the Great Barrier Reef after World War Two. The mines had been laid by the Australian Government during the war to protect Australian waters. In 1947 the first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was sunk by one of these mines and lies on the ocean floor off Cockburn Reef in northern Queensland. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981 and was a Fremantle-class patrol boat assisting in capturing illegal fishing boats and participating in military exercises in Australian waters. In 2005 the second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was decommissioned after 24 years’ service. This pennant is important as a souvenir of the H.M.A.S Warrnambool, a ship that had obvious links with the City of Warrnambool. In 2005 the Mayor of Warrnambool, Glenys Phillpot, attended the decommissioning of this ship at Darwin and brought back several souvenirs of the ship. This is a triangular-shaped pennant made of dark blue felt material. It has stitching at the straight edge with two tabs for attaching the pennant to a pole or post. The pennant has a badge of yellow, black and white tonings printed or stamped on to the felt. The badge includes a white unicorn, a stylized ship and crown, a boomerang and two other implements and the motto, ‘Protect and Avenge’. The words, ‘H.M.A.S. Warrnambool’ are printed on the pennant in yellow. ‘H.M.A.S. Warrnambool’h.m.a.s. warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Pants, Fletcher Jones, Mid 20th century
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These trousers have been made by Fletcher Jones and Staff. This business was established by David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) in 1924 when he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. In 1928 he moved his business to the main retailing area near the Liebig Street/Koroit Street intersection. In 1931 a shop built to Fletcher Jones’ requirements was erected and by 1938 he had a staff of 40. By 1945 FJ trousers were sold in 123 stores in Victoria and in 1948 the Fletcher Jones factory was established in Flaxman Street Warrnambool, officially named Pleasant Hill. In 1951 the company became Fletcher Jones and Staff and by the mid 1970s the staff had 75% ownership. By this time FJ and Staff had become one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Australia with 55 shops and almost 3000 employees. The range of clothing was enlarged to include both men’s and women’s wear. In the 1980s, after the death of Fletcher Jones, the abolition of import tariffs and the availability of cheap imported clothing caused the Fletcher Jones Company to decline and to be sold to a Geelong company. By 2011 all Fletcher Jones shops had closed. These trousers are of great interest as they are a product of a Warrnambool business that was nationally and internationally known in the 20th century for its quality men’s wear, especially the Coverdine brand trousers. The Fletcher Jones business remains one of the most important businesses, (if not the most important), that ever existed in Warrnambool. It employed a great number of local people in the second half of the 20th century, and is remembered with great fondness by many people in the city and surrounds today. The Fletcher Jones Gardens at the Factory site are still maintained today and are a tourist attraction in the city. These are a pair of brown Fletcher Jones trousers made of Coverdine material (87.5% wool with nylon). There is some lining around the waist area and the legs are turned up at the end with some leather binding inside the bottom legs. The waist band is stiffened and is fastened with a metal clip and two buttons. The waist band has two adjustable areas using tabs and two buttons each side. The back pockets also have buttons.fletcher jones and staff, coverdine fletcher jones trousers, history of warrnambool, david fletcher jones -

Document, Dr Angus residence plans, 1939
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These are plans for alterations to the residence and surgery of Dr Angus in Koroit Street, Warrnambool (Birchwood). Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970), after several years practising as a doctor in South Australia and northern Victoria, came to Warrnambool in 1939, purchasing the practice of Dr John Hunter Henderson (Birchwood). Dr Angus was a dominant figure in medical and community circles in Warrnambool for 30 years, becoming an important ophthalmologist in his later years. Birchwood, with its beautiful gardens, lawns and tennis court was suitable for entertaining and many distinguished people, including Vice-Regal personnel and representatives of the Red Cross stayed at the house. It was also a meeting place for representatives of the many organizations with which Dr Angus was associated (over 20 groups including the Good Neighbour Council, the Boys’ Club, the Food For Britain appeal, the Historical Society, Rostrum and the National Fitness Council). Birchwood or earlier buildings on the site was used as a residence/surgery by many doctors in Warrnambool, going back to the 1860s and Dr Angus and his family lived there from 1939 to 1967. In 1998 Birchwood was demolished and a new Warrnambool Police Station was built on the site. These plans are of interest as they show the 1939 alterations to the building known as Birchwood in Koroit Street Warrnambool. We have a good floor plan and a drawing of the front of the building so we know what it looked like in the late 1930s. Both Birchwood and Dr Angus are important in Warrnambool’s history. These are four sheets showing alterations for the residence of Dr Angus (Birchwood) in Koroit Street Warrnambool. One sheet shows the front of the house in colour drawn in ink and pencil and paint and there is a copy of this in black and white. The other drawing is of the plans for the house drawn in pencil and ink and with some red and blue colouring. There is another exact copy of this sheet. dr william roy angus, birchwood, history of warrnambool -
