Document - Application For Lease Of Site Selected By S.E.C
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This item is significant because it documents proposals put forward by Bob Hymans to develop facilities in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A letter of application from Mr Hymans for the lease of land offered by the State Electricity Commission to develop a tourist hotel. His hotel would provide accommodation for 100 guests. It would contain a dining-room seating 140 and cater for guests and day-visitors. Other facilities included a lounge, public-bar and lounge-bar facilities. A private lounge for reception would also provide guest and convention facilities. His project was designed as a year-round resort hotel. As well as serving as a winter sports hotel, the plan featured indoor facilities including a heated swimming pool, squash courts, bowling alley and sauna bath. Stables, a tennis court and boats would also attract year-round tourism. The budgeted cost was £130,000 plus bowling alley equipment. He planned that construction would commence in October, 1963 and be completed in June, 1965.falls creek tourist area management committee, hymans' hotel plans, falls creek development -

Functional object - Trunk
This metal travelling trunk belonged to David and Alice Ellis, a young couple married in Dublin in 1855. They left for Australia on the Schomberg clipper ship on October 6 that same year, joining the other passengers for the luxury sailing ship’s first voyage, bound for Melbourne, Australia. The Schomberg was grounded on a sand spit near Peterborough. All passengers and crew were safely rescued. They had been allowed to take something small with them when leaving the sinking vessel, and as such, Alice took a small can basket and coin purse. The metal trunk was also amongst the couple’s possessions, along with a pair of candlesticks and a Bible. Their trunk was later retrieved from the ship’s deck by the crew of a steamer sent from Melbourne. At that time, David was 23 years old (born in Wales, in 1832) and Alice was 26 (born in Ireland, 1829). The couple lived in Tasmania for a short period before settling in the Western Districts of Victoria. David worked as a gardener and, when land in the area was available to purchase, David and Alice claimed a selection on Noorat Road near Terang. They settled there for the remainder of their lives, expanding the property that they named, ‘Allambah’, and had six children. David died in 1911, aged 79, and Alice passed away the following year, aged 83. B, B & B. Brand: - The company was renowned for its strongly constructed and high-quality travel goods. In 1906 the company was sold and renamed Buffalo Trunk Manufacturing Co. Interestingly, the trunk maker’s promise on its printed label is certainly fulfilled: - "B B BRAND. These Goods are manufactured of the best steel sheets, and are guaranteed to give every satisfaction, and will last for years."David and Alice Ellis’s donated possessions have great significance as a group of personal belongings saved from the sinking luxury clipper ship, the Schomberg, in 1855. The strong, well-crafted metal trunk is an example of high-quality travel luggage owned by newlyweds on their journey to a new life across the world. The well-made trunk is a rare shape. It joins Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from the Schomberg shipwreck, which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S612). The ship has historical significance as a rare example of a large, fast clipper ship on the England to Australia run, built to carry emigrants at the time of the Victorian gold rush. The ship’s design included the technical advances needed to break sailing records between Europe and Australia. The relationship of the objects in Flagstaff Hill’s Schomberg collection allows has potential interpretation of the story of the Schomberg. The collection of objects is archaeologically significant as the remains of an international passenger ship, as it represents aspects of Victoria’s shipping history, in addition to its association with the shipwreck and the ship.Traveller's metal trunk; small brown woodgrain patterned trunk with dark red features and brass lock. This well-made strong and sturdy piece of secure hand luggage has rounded corners and sides, with the ends of the lid slightly bulbous. The lid is reinforced inside across the centre. The lid and sides have dark red metal D-shaped handles that fold down. The two hinges on the lid have their fittings inside the trunk which is hinged across the back. Two dark red painted latches secure the front along with a brass rod and lockable latch in the centre front. The metal is shaped with a group of corrugated ribs on each side of the centre, around the trunk. A white printed and lacquered label is inside the lid and has additional handwritten text. The truck was the luggage of David and Alice Ellis on the sailing ship SCHOMBERG in 1855. This is a silk picture woven by the highly acclaimed French jacquard loom woven tapestry maker Neyret Freres. The scene is derived from a painting by Spanish artist Mariano Alonzo Perez (1853-1930). This style of weaving is referred to as a Stevengraph, named for their original creator, Thomas Stevens (1828-1888), a 19th century weaver from Coventry, England. Neyret Freres began manufacturing textiles in 1823, and are still in operation today. Silk embroidery in a decorative gilt frame. The scene depicts a Victorian era billiards room. An ornate billiard table is at the centre of the image. At the near end of the table, two men are crouching down and leaning over the table, examining billiard balls while holding billiard cues in their left hands. At the far end of the table, a woman is sitting on the corner of the billiard table while holding a billiard cue in her left hand, in an intimate face to face pose with a man standing behind the billiard table. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Letter - Correspondence, Letter to Lillie from Howard, 29 August 1925
The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925. Page 1 S/S City of Norwich Port Said My Dear Old Lillie, Well, I never got so much of a shock in my life, when your postcard turned up 2 days before my birthday, wishing me many happy returns, for which I thank you sincerely, and am sorry to say I had forgotten yours, or being very quiet about your various qualities, you would not tell me. Well to get on with the news, the next day I had a telegram to report at the Line head office, on the 15th Aug. early, imagine how I swore, as a little do was to [be] held at night, they immediately shored me on this ship S/S City of Norwich to go to Port Said, then join the City of Corinth bound for Boston & New-York so I may come out to “little Aussie” again from there with a little luck, any way we ought to be in New-York about the 19th Sept to stay a month, I will write you more in detail from there, if you feel inclined and have forgiven me for being so long about answering your last letter, could you write to S/S City of Corinth, C/o Norton Lilly & Co, New-York. You must be A.1 actresses to amuse such a motley crew. Hoping you are all well at home, give Mr & Mrs Duncan my kind regards, sending my best love to you dear. Document, Australian Imperial Force, 1918
A leaflet issued by General William Birdwood to the AIF troops just after the Armistice on 11 November 1918 to end the first world war. 'To the officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Australian Imperial Force. It is now just four that we have been serving together, often through days of hardship and peril, and often through times of well-deserved success. During this time I hope and think we have come to know each other well and I trust we realised how rightly we have confidence in each other. No words of mine can possibly express all I feel for the magnificent work which has been done by the Australian soldier during these long four years. It is well known and recognised, not only throughout the British Empire, but throughout the world - and now we have peace in sight, and peace after a victory in which the Australian soldier has taken so large a share. Even then, with peace there are still difficult times before us. Faith in our recent foe cannot quickly be established, and it may be that some little time yet we shall be able to relax no precautions, until we are assured of the complete and honest fulfilment of our terms. Then will come the difficult time of demobilisation, and it is regarding this that I wish to make a personal appeal to every single member of the AIF in the full confidence that it will be met as every other appeal to face and tackle the strongest positions has ever been met by the Australian solider. Never has the name of Australia stood higher than it does now throughout the world, thanks to the bravery of her soldiers, and it sup to everyone one of us to see that this is maintained, and that no reproach can be cast on the Australian Flag owing to any behaviour of ours. The time of demobilisation will undoubtedly be difficult and irksome - I fully realise what great personal self-restraint will certainly be required - but if each individual of us makes up his mind to do his best during these times, realising the good name we bear, I feel confident that all will go well. I want you to remember that everything possible will be done to look after and help the troops during this period, while every energy will be strained to get men back to their homes as soon as this possibly can be done. You will have to realise, however. that there is a great shortage of shipping, and that there must be a considerable inevitable delay. Play the game, boys, during this time, as you have always done, and add still more to the deep debt of gratitude which will always be acknowledged to you by the Empire and remembered by me as your comrade and commander. In the field, 14 November 1918.' Boot, Charles Rogers
These boots belonged to Captain Charlie Rogers of the Australian Army who wore these and ceremonial regalia when he was part of the Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and an Army identity. He built a house in Birdwood Avenue, Warrnambool, in 1935 and was a long-serving Warrnambool Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the boots worn by Army Lighthorse personnel in the 1930s. The mechanism for keeping the boots in good condition is of some technological interest. They are also of interest because they belonged to a well-known 20th century Warrnambool person. These are two knee-high brown leather boots with brown laces. The boots are slightly scuffed. Inside the boots are two pieces of red-striped canvas. The boots have wooden inserts to support the boots in storage. These wooden inserts, all varnished, are in four pieces - a solid foot shape to fit in the foot of the boots, two pieces shaped to fit the calf of the leg padded with green felt, one with slight indents at the top and the bottom and the other with a decided groove and the centre piece that has a hole cut out to fit the shape of the other two. This last piece has a wooden handle with a metal attachment. There is only one handle as it can be screwed out and fitted to either wooden insert. On the two wooden inserts ‘R ‘ for right and ‘L’ for left, marked twice on each insert.charles rogers, duke of gloucester, warrnambool -

Clothing, G. Wardrop, Tailor, Button, Early 20th century
This button has come from an item of clothing made by George Wardrop, a well-known Victorian tailor who was apprenticed to a Mr J. Jones in Smith Street Collingwood in the late 19th century. George Wardrop was a partner in the Jones firm for seven years before opening his own tailoring business in Collingwood and later in Northcote. The business expanded, with a major store in Melbourne established in the 1930s, (Wardrops, My Tailor) and other stores opening in suburban and regional areas in Victoria. The business lasted until the early 1970s. This button is of interest as it was found in a Warrnambool garden and perhaps came from an item of clothing owned by a local resident and purchased from a Wardrop tailoring shop early in the 20th century. This is a round buff-coloured button with an eyelet and printing around the button edge. The item is slightly bent and discoloured.‘G. Wardrop Collingwood’wardrop, tailor -

It shows Humpty Dumpty and a girl nursery rhyme character and is believed to have been on the wall in a children's ward at the Warrnambool Hospital. The painters were A&A Henderson of Ballarat, believed to be Angus and Andrew Henderson who had a sign-writing and house decorating business in Ballarat in the early to mid 20th century. The business operated under the name Henderson Brothers. Angus Henderson was a well known Ballarat signwriter who taught signwriting at the Ballarat Technical Art School in the 1940sThis is a piece of cream canvas material on which are painted two nursery rhyme figures in various colours. There is some evidence of mould on the back of the canvas. A.& A.Henderson Ballarathenderson brothers, signwriters, ballarat -

Black and white rectangular photograph, 1950?
The paddle steamer P. S Pevensy appears to still be a working steamer in this photograph. The boat seems a bit dishevelled and the workers are doing repairs on her, while she is still steaming up the river. If this photograph was taken in 1950, that would have been well before the development of the Tourism Industry in the Murray Darling area. This would explain the number of workers and the fact that they were doing maintenance while the Paddle Steamer was still working. She does not appear to be towing a barge, but a large tarpaulin could be covering a load for transport. This picture holds significance because it shows a paddle steamer in use before the Tourism Industry had developed in the Murray Darling region. The paddle steamer which now carries passengers every day has been renovated to cater for passengers cruising up and down the river. Here is this photograph the P.S Pevensy looks a bit dishevelled and untidy. This is a black and white rectangular photograph of the P.S Pevensey. Four people can be seen painting the wall of the cabins on the upper deck. A person can also be seen kneeling on the back deck working on something lying on the back deck. A wooden boat is nearby, also on the back deck. The boat is steaming and appears to be moving upstream. There is along pole at a 45 degree angle attached to the very front of the paddle steamer. On the front of the photograph written on the paddle steamer can't be seen the words "PEVENSEY. Melbourne." Written on the back of the photograph in lead pencil " M4414-17. K4". p.s pevensey, paddle steamers -

Over the years his real estate business was involved in the selling of many well-known Warrnambool properties, including the Lyndoch estate. These cuff links are of considerable interest as they are mementoes of the life and work of the prominent Warrnambool auctioneer and real estate agent, Harry GreeningThese are two identical gold cuff links in a rectangular shape cut across the edges. The centre of the cuff links is an oval shape with ornamentation around the outside and two inscribed letters in the middle. Domestic object - Cream Can, Malleys Ltd, 1920-1950
This small cream can was made by the Sydney firm of Malleys Ltd from the 1930s until the 1950s and came in various sizes. Malleys Ltd was established in about 1890 by Francis Malley (1863-1932). This firm was located in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria, in McEvoy Street. They manufactured items for use in the dairy industry, as well as for hardware related to building and plumbing. Many of the Malley dairy products were sold under the "Sunrise" name. Malley retired in 1912. In 1931 there were branches at Parramatta, Hurstville & North Sydney. This cream can was designed for domestic home use and was used to fetch cream from a dairy or retailer of dairy products between 1920 to 1950s. M Luscombe Diamond Creek on the nameplate suggests this is the farm dairy that supplied the cream the can would hold and that they were the owners of the can. This dairy no longer exists as the area is now a housing estate.Cream can, round metal container with fitted lid and carrying handle. Can has a short wide neck. Body has embossed letters and an attached metal nameplate that has been soldered. Made by Malleys. Embossed raised letters "MALLEYS".
