Craig Thomson was a trade union official and subsequently a federal ALP parliamentarian for the seat of Dobell. After allegations of theft and fraud by Kathy Jackson, Thomson addressed parliament prior to the allegations being tested in court; he protested his innocence and highlighted what he believed to be a distinguished contribution to the trade union movement. The courts subsequently found Thomson guilty of fraud and theft during his time at the Health Services Union. The recording contains Thomson's address to parliament (above) that took place on 21 May, 2012.Relevant to the history and conduct of elected officials within the Health Services Union. Jody Bartolo and his band 'Diggers with Attitude' founded Punks for West Papua with the aim to raise money and awareness for the Free West Papua cause. West Papua was overtaken in 1969 by a rigged vote by Indonesia. The Indonesian military has killed hundreds of thousands of West Papuans since then. There has been a ban on journalists and foreign aid to enter West Papua which means that the killings of hundreds of thousands of West Papuans by Indonesian military have been kept secret. Labour Day originates from the eight-hour day movement - eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. On 21 April 1856 Stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne, Australia, stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their direct action protest was a success, and they are noted as the first organised workers in the world to achieve an eight-hour day with no loss of pay, which subsequently inspired the celebration of Labour Day and May Day.
