George Smith was a noted nurseryman and seedsman who founded the Royal Exotic Nurseries at Lake Wendouree. He gave technical advice in the laying out of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, the planting of street trees and in advancing numerous municipal works around Ballarat.George Smith advanced the interests of Ballarat and its inhabitants in numerous ways, especially in agriculture and horticulture. First curator's cottage, was built in the gardens early 1860's, later moved to 1414 Gregory St, now relocated back to the Northern Gardens and used by the "Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens" for meetings and Botanikids activities.The Cottage is important as an early structure in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. It is one of the early works of the Ballarat pioneer architect, Cassini. Its removal from Gregory Street back to the Gardens is testament to the generosity and enthusiasm of the Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Its renovation was funded by the Ballarat City Council and the Friends of the Botanic Gardens as an important landmark from the past. It is now visited, used and enjoyed by the community. Charles Robert Rooney was born 1894 and worked as a gardener at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens until joining the Army in July 1915, aged 21 years. Charles was recorded as "Killed in Action" on 26th November 1917. Charles was the son of Tom Rooney, curator at the gardens until 1914. Little is known of Charles Rooney's contribution to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, as he was only twenty-one when he enlisted and went to War and was reported "killed in action". Donald Victor BLACK, gardener, served and died as a result of WW11 service, an oak tree in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens is dedicated to him, 19th March 1944. Donald V. Black was highly regarded as a gardener in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens before he saw action in the Middle East and New Guinea during World War 2. "The Little Zoo in the Gardens" booklet. Henry Ben Jahn was the benefactor behind the establishment of the Ballarat Zoological Gardens. He died 28 December, 1911 and the zoo was opened on 17 April, 1917 and closed 1957.
