Kerrie Cross was a member of the Ballarat School of Mines Council from 1985 to 1992. In 1987 she was appointed as the first female senior vice president of the School of Mines Council. She was the President from 1988 to 1991. Prior to this she chaired the equal opportunity committee at the school. Kerrie has been the regional manager of the Department of Community Services and now the assistant regional director for the Department of Health in the Central Highlands/Wimmera region. This is a photograph of Annabella McKenzie who trained at The Royal Melbourne in the 1890's. The Royal Melbourne Hospital was the first hospital in Victoria – established in 1848 to serve the young and thriving community of Melbourne. Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three-year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Annabella Mckenzie Fisher was born into the Mckenzie family and married into the Fisher family. Ithaca House, the home of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society, is located at 329 - 335 Elizabeth Street. The site was purchased in the mid 1950s to build the club rooms. The money for the venture was raised by the issue of non-redeemable 10 and 50 pound debentures to members. Nicholas Sofarnos, a young Ithacan architecture graduate, designed the building. Construction was completed in 1958. Up until 2020 Yamaha were long standing ground floor tenants. Prior to the building of Ithaca House, from 1917 up until 1958, the club rooms were located on the top floor of Michael's Building on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society has been a focal point initially for expatriate Ithacans and as the years have passed it holds many happy memories for Australian born Ithacans through the generations.A coloured photograph of a three storey grey building in a city street with two cars being driven along the road. This machine uses a series of combs attached to bars that move with increasing speed away from a starting point. This draws-out and aligns the wool fibres to produce a gilled top. The gilling process is also used in other positions along the worsted production line. A gill box draws and combs the fibres prior to spinning. In the days before television advertising and the WWW, commercial artists such as John Whittenbury designed posters, railway billboards and trade exhibitions advertising products and services to the masses. Whittenbury’s series of quirky Christmas mail posters for the Post Masters General Office, now known as Australia Post, were displayed in post offices across Australia. He had a wealth of experience in the field, having worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, cartoonist, and mechanical draftsman for the RAAF in Laverton and then Victoria Barracks, and also taking out a qualification in Advertising Art from RMIT in 1961, prior to joining the PMG. Frederick de Kock first advertised as a teacher of French situated in Mr N Caire's photographic Studio, View Place. In 1882 he began teaching hand painting on ceramics. In 1883 he advertised as a photographer with his own studio on the corner of Mitchell and King Street, which was later named the Bendigo Portrait rooms. In December 1887 Mrs De Kock sold all her goods prior to a move to Sydney. In 1888 Frederick advertised as a representative of the Enlargement Company who was visiting Bendigo to take orders. This tunic was worn by Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC when Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Joseph Arthur Bailey, described as a manager in electoral rolls, came to Surrey Hills some time before 1903. He was born in Brighton in 1873 and died in Burwood in 1929 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was the son of George Bailey and Georgina Hardwick, who lived in Healesville for a time but 'retired' to Surrey Hills where they are listed at 'Claremont' in Mont Albert Road in 1919. Joseph married Eleanor Beatrice Greenhill in 1897. They had 3 sons - Rupert Aitken (who served in WW1); Kenneth Alan and Edwin George. Prior to living in Trafalgar Street they lived at 9 Victoria Crescent. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress O'Brien was born Annie Webb at Dunolly in 1893 and died in 1938 aged 68. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Monica Cecelia Murray was born in 1910 in Strathfieldsaye and married Thomas Flood in 1934. She served as Mayoress for four terms and died in 1973. Mayoress Flood was president of the St Mary's Past Pupul's Association and a patron of the Bendigo Girl Guildes. This photograph was taken four years after bicycles were purchased by the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) and is a record of the first mode of transport used by their Trained nurses, and a record of the change of head ware needed now bicycles were in use. The uniforms were grey with white collar, belt and cuffs and a red Maltese cross was in the centre of the pith helmet. Prior to the use of bicycles the trained nurses walked to their patients and had become exhausted, particularly in summer. The bicycles were a solution to this problem, and now they could visit more patients and the Society's areas (districts) could be extended. In February 1885, 50 years after Melbourne was founded, it was recognized that nursing care was needed for the sick poor in inner Melbourne. The Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), the first such Society in Australia, was founded with one Trained nurse, called 'Nurse' in those days, and a second employed six months later. They worked in the now CBD, ie from Spencer Street to Spring Street and from Victoria Parade to Flinders Street. From its inception the Society was at the forefront of health care. They provided high quality nursing care; educated their patients in the curing and prevention of disease; teaching the importance of cleanliness and good nutrition, both by verbal instruction and demonstration, even supplying soup and milk when needed. At that time they walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of inner Melbourne carrying their nursing bag containing lotion, ointments, powders, liniment, bandages, dressings, a case of spirits, and the Nurse's own clean apron, soap and small towel. They supplied equipment on loan, such as earthenware hot water bottles, splints, urinals, bed pans, bed cradles, feeding mugs, and air-cushions as well as providing blankets, clean bed linen, and nightdresses as necessary. Trained Midwives began home births in late 1893 taking midwifery bundles and providing clothes for the babe and mother as needed. This was arduous work, particularly in the heat of summer. Permission to use bicycles was given to the Nurses in 1898 and the Society decided to purchase their own in 1903. A business man offered ‘new free wheel’ bicycles at £13 each which included maintenance for one year. Bells and wooden frames were added, at a cost of £5 per frame, so the Nurses could carry extra equipment. Nurses’ bags were strapped to the handlebars. Soup was made for those in need 2-3 times a week and if patients could not arrange to have it collected the soup was delivered by the Nurses on their bicycles. The use of bicycles caused a change in uniform, with white pith helmets, and veils covering them and tied under their chin, now being used. The Nurses provided high quality nursing care to a range of people, often in destitute situations, some lying on rags on the floor as they had no bed, others with just a bed and maybe a thin blanket, a chair and nothing else. Their ages ranged from babes, children, adults to the elderly. The Nurses gave medications as ordered by a Doctor, dressed wounds e.g. to the injured, and surgical cases, and to those with leg ulcers; attended to patients with ‘surgical ailments’ such as ‘hip disease’; gave care to those with acute illnesses such as bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia, measles, and scarlet fever, as well as those with chronic illnesses such as consumption (tuberculosis), heart disease, arthritis, cancer, debility, neuritis and paralysis. Over the years the Nurses complained that their veils became wet in the rain and asked for a change of uniform but this did not occur until 1921. Bicycles continued to be used in inner areas until 1945. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of the children with floral wreaths on the steps of the Shrine in 1970. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies.
