Trophy, NWRC Barber Cup 1935
The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). It shows what sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals the popularity of rifle shooting in Warrnambool in earlier decades, with two clubs existing at that timeThis is a sports trophy cup made of electro-plated nickel silver (now very tarnished). It was a trophy named ‘The Barber Centenary Cup’ given for competitions amongst the North Warrnambool Rifle Club members during 1934-5. On cup: N.W.R.C. Document, Licence Motor boatman, 1918
This is a licence issued to Leslie Palmer in 1918. It gives him authority to operate a motor boat across the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth and to carry passengers. As there is a bridge at the mouth of the river it is assumed that this motor boat was used to go across the river from a private house, making it more convenient than going by road to cross the bridge. It was, and still is, a common practice to use boats to cross the river from private homes built along the banks of the Hopkins River. This is a significant item as it is an original certificate and is interesting because the licence was a restricted one, for use only in crossing the Hopkins River. This is a paper licence issued by the Marine Board of Victoria in 1918. The certificate has printed material and entries written in black ink. It has the seal of the Marine Board and the signature of the SecretaryWritten material: ‘Leslie Alfred Palmer of Warrnambool, oil, on the Hopkins River within a line bearing east from Point Ritchie on the western side of the mouth of such river to the opposite shore, 6th December 1918’ motor boat licence 1918, warrnambool, leslie palmer, hopkins river -

He was community minded and promoted support for local industry, advertising his locally made or sourced products. He and his wife were involved in the Congregational church and music. Badge, Warrnambool Butter
These discs come from the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford and promote the butter manufacture. The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory was established in 1888 and was one of the first co-operative butter factories in Victoria. Cheese making started at the factory in 1892, with the Kraft Food Company leasing the factory in the 1930s and continuing for many years to operate the cheese production area. These discs are of some interest as ones used by a premier factory in the Warrnambool district. Dairying in the Warrnambool district is of major significance. These metal discs, four in number, are in the shape of a shield and have gold, brown and green enamelling on the front. There is an image of a cow with a boomerang shape underneath. The discs would be used for packaging and promotional material and are intended to be glued on to the material. ‘Warrnambool Butter, Allansford’warrnambool cheese and butter factory, allansford -

Certificate - Ticket Book, Main Belfast Road Toll, 2s 6d, 1860s
The Shire of Warrnambool operated toll gates from 1866 to 1869 as a means of revenue rai sing for road construction. There were three toll gate locations – on the main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road at Dennington Bridge, on the Woodford Road at Russells Creek and on the Geelong Road at the Allansford Bridge. The toll gates were unpopular and unprofitable for the lessees as travellers were able to avoid the tax by skirting around the gates. They had toll houses besides the gates. The printers of these tickets, Fairfax and Laurie were the lessees at the time of the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper. This paper, founded by Richard Osburne and John Wilkinson, and published with some gaps from 1851 to 1880, is a key source today of Warrnambool’s history at that time. These toll gates tickets are significant because:- 1. They date back to the 1860s and were only issued from 1866 to 1869. 2. They are the only artefacts we hold of the time when toll gates were operating in our local district 3. They are the best example of how the Shire of Warrnambool in its early history raised revenue for road building and maintenance This is a book of toll gate tickets for sale at the Main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road Toll Gate.
