All members of the Australian Survey Corps, that was later renamed the Royal Australian Survey Corps were expected to be proficient at freehand lettering and figuring. Initially all text on military maps was hand lettered in ink and an extremely high level of proficiency was required. Later technology changes meant that there was less reliance on hand lettering. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director of the Survey Corps from 1942 to 1960 and was succeeded by COL Don Macdonald AM, MID. COL Frank Buckland OBE, MID succeeded BRIG Don Macdonald AM, MID as Director of the Survey Corps in 1967. He served as Director until 1972. A Souvenir Booklet recording the Section photos and a Nominal roll of those who served 1942-45 at the Land Headquarters Cartographic Company, Australian Survey Corps located at "Fortuna Villa" Bendigo was produced at the end of WWII. Each member of the unit was presented with a copy of the booklet. The booklet besides being a great memory for those who served is a very valuable resource as it names the individuals in the photographs and very importantly records a Nominal Roll of unit members and their Military details. This booklet is one of those original booklets. The booklet has been reprinted on a number of occasions with different coloured covers. The first and original booklet had a red cover. Editions with brown, dark blue and black exist. The black covered edition was the last reprint. This booklet was donated by Carol Hargrave of Grenfell, NSW after discovering it in an old trunk that she purchased. A black covered edition was donated by a local Bendigo Antique Dealer in September 2024.A4 sized red cloth covered hard covered book mainly containing sub-unit photographs of section members and includes their names. 23 x double sided pages of photographs and 2 double sided pages of a Nominal Roll of those who served at Fortuna 1942 - 45. Following cessation of hostilities following WWII the Survey Corps was actively redeployed to commence mapping of Mainland Australia to ensure that Australia's limited mapping coverage situation was not repeated should any similar conflict occur. There was still an urgent requirement to map enemy occupied territory for the recovery of our prisoners of war. This envelope was specifically produced for the 75th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This First Day cover envelope was stamped at the Bonegilla Military Post Office on 29 June 1990 in preparation for the Corps birthday on 1 July. The School of Military Survey was located at Bonegilla Victoria adjacent to Lake Hume reservoir. This is the second Edition of the "Chrology of the Royal Australian Survey Corps" produced in 1985 by the officers at the School of Military Survey (SMS). The First Edition produced in 1979 was also produced at the SMS. Since the first edition was produced, a definitive history of the Corps has been published by Brigadier Fitzgerald in his book "Lebanon to Labuan" in 1980 and is the story of the Corps during WWII. This new edition has been completely revised and updated. In order that amendments for future editions may easily be made, this document has compiled on computer. Survey Corps Flags of this type were produced mid to late 1970's and distributed to all Survey Corps Units. This flag was issued to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and flew during daylight hours on the Unit flag pole at Fortuna Villa for many years. The flag was ceremonially marched out of the gate on the day that the Army Survey Regiment was disbanded in 1996. This flag was issued to 4 Fd Svy Sqn and flew during daylight hours on the Unit flag pole at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide from issue until 1995. The flag was signed by about 160 of the 208 attendees at the Ceremonial closing of the Unit on 25 November 1995. This is a photograph of 566 WX31826 LT W.J. Harrison. Wilfred John Harrison enlisted in the Permanent Military Force on the 24 Apr 1939 in Western Australia at the rank of WO2. He was one of the fifty Permanent Force members of the Australian Survey Corps as of 3 Sep 1939. WO2 Harrison’s first unit was No 3 Survey Section, located in the 2nd Military District, New South Wales. It is not known when he was commissioned as an officer. The following events were held during the weekend of celebrations: Friday 3 July 2015 – Informal Meet and Greet at the Bendigo RSL. Saturday 4 July 2015 – 1030hrs Civic Reception Bendigo Town Hall. Saturday 4 July 2015 – 1400 -1600hrs Open House at Turriff (The WRAAC Barracks). Saturday 4 July 2015 – 1900 for 1930hrs Main Dinner Function at the All-Seasons Function Centre. Sunday 5 July 2015 - Catholic & Anglican Church Services. Sunday 5 July 2015 – 1200hrs BBQ Lunch Goldmines Hotel.
