Linton and District Historical Society IncPhotograph, Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus Shop, Sussex Street, Linton
... (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) ...(See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) ...Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop around 1901. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) In 1905, Will Angus advertised that he had moved his business to the building on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets (later this became J. H. Barr's drapery shop.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. There is a flagpole attached to one of the gate posts of the hall, and there is a telegraph pole in the street in front of the hall.w. angus, william angus, wilhelmina angus (née statemann), buildings, shire of grenville hall, shops, shire hall, town hall -

He began his maritime career in 1861 as an apprentice seaman at almost 15 years old and received his Master Certificate in 1871. In 1881, aged 35, he took his first command on the vessel Coldstream. His sailing skill and careful financial management earned him the command of the Cutty Sark for ten of its voyages. For another year, he commanded the Coldingham, then retired from life as a mariner in 1896. The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. At first, it carried tea from China. Later, it was used to transport wool from Australia. It became famous for its speed and held the record for the fastest voyage from Australia to Britain for ten years. Later, a Portuguese company bought the ship and renamed it Ferreira. After that, a retired sea captain purchased it to use as a training ship in Cornwall. When the captain died, the ship was given to a training college in Greenwich in 1938. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. The postcard is important for is connection with the vessel, Cutty Sark, a special ship because it carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. Postcards like this one help us imagine what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships were common, and they show us how trade, travel and migration changed over time. The Cutty Sark is also famous for being very fast. It set a record for the journey from Australia to Britain and kept that title for ten years. Today, people still recognise its importance because it has been carefully preserved and is on display at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its story has also made it a favourite subject for people who enjoy building ship models. The postcard is important to Australian history, as it shows the Cutty Sark at Sydney on one of its voyages, in the command of Captain Richard Woodget, a respected mariner and master of sailing ships.Postcard: Black and white postcard of a photographed image of a 3-masted sailing ship, sails half-lowered. John Waghorn was an amateur historian, an authority on the history of Victoria's postal services. Eltham District Historical Society IncPhotograph - Digital Photograph, Alan King, Reid family graves, Arthurs Creek Cemetery, 30 March 2008
... Linton near Ballarat, the cemetery was renamed the Arthurs Creek Public Cemetery in 1926. Arthurs Creek was named after Henry Arthur, a pastoralist and public servant, who ran 1000 sheep lower down the Creek, from 1836 to 1841. It is believed he built his home at the end of today’s Challenger Street in Diamond Creek. This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history ...The Arthurs Creek Cemetery was originally the private cemetery of pioneers Agnes and Patrick Reid. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then / Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p11 The Hazel Glen property, at Middle Hut Road, Arthurs Creek, which includes one of Victoria’s earliest pioneer buildings, was the forerunner to the Arthurs Creek and Doreen townships. At one time the Doreen Post Office and school were called Hazel Glen. The Hazel Glen State School No 945, before it was moved to its present site, stood on land to the south of Chapel Lane, which had been donated by Hazel Glen owner, William Reid. In May 1895 the post office was renamed Doreen to avoid confusion with the Reid’s address. The Arthurs Creek Cemetery was originally the private cemetery of Hazel Glen pioneers Agnes and Patrick Reid. The Reids with their eight children, arrived in Melbourne in April 1839. In 1844 Patrick Reid took over the licence to the Stewart Ponds run of 5120 acres (2072ha). Reid renamed it Hazel Glen, after Hazelden, the name of the Reid estate at Mearns in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Reid built a small cottage from local stone and hand-made bricks, with walls one yard (91 cm) thick, a flagstone floor and a shingle roof. Today two rooms and a store room survive as part of a larger house. Agnes died in 1847 aged 49, and was buried on a hill overlooking Hazel Glen, where it is said she had asked to be buried as it had been a favourite picnic spot.2 In 1858 Patrick died aged 74, and was buried near her. Their son William was to become Whittlesea Shire’s first president. From 1868 he was a Whittlesea Roads Board member, then a shire councillor until shortly before his death in 1923 aged 88. In 1865 the Reid’s burial area was no longer on their property, so it was declared a cemetery site. In 1867 it became the Linton Public Cemetery, being in the Linton Parish. However, to avoid confusion with Linton near Ballarat, the cemetery was renamed the Arthurs Creek Public Cemetery in 1926. Arthurs Creek was named after Henry Arthur, a pastoralist and public servant, who ran 1000 sheep lower down the Creek, from 1836 to 1841. It is believed he built his home at the end of today’s Challenger Street in Diamond Creek. This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. It remains the most recent comprehenesive publication devoted to the Shire's history connecting local residents to the past. agnes reid, arthurs creek cemetery, nillumbik now and then (marshall-king) collection, patrick reid, reid family -

The buildings are recorded in the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study Amended 2017 (Heritage Overlay No. HO219) and notes the following: Historically, they are among the oldest shops in Nelson Place and illustrate the early development of the street during the most prosperous period of the Port. They are also important for their associations with Thomas Mason. Thomas Mason, who owned these two shops, each of stone, brick and four rooms until c1880, was one of the most significant men in the early history of Williamstown. In 1858 he ran the two shops jointly with Benjamin Culley, a draper and clothier (Refer to 55 Cecil Street). Culley and Mason's partnership dissolved and after a brief period as the Ship Inn, in 1859, the two shops were now leased to various other businessmen, some of the longest standing being Matthew Suffren, a watchmaker; Edward Bailey, a chemist; a stationer, George Divers; Henry Douglas a plumber and Henry Linton, a boot maker (Refer to 22 James St, 46-48 and 50 Stevedore Street). In 1880 Mrs. Mason had assumed ownership which she retained until the shops were retaken by the executors of Sutton's estate (1890). Given the property's description in the period 1857-59 as a store of wood and stone and in 1860, as two shops of brick and stone, it is probable in that year that the whole premises was rebuilt. Thomas Mason, originally a Londoner, arrived in the colony in 1841. On 24 August 1844 he took charge of the signal station, and subsequently the light- house (then a lamp in a wooden tower), for a further five years. In `Port of Many Prows', Wilson Evans recounts a tale which indicates that Mason may not have been entirely conscientious in this role. After this he took up storekeeping and auctioneering but gave up the shopkeeping in 1858. He was a member of the first Williamstown Council and its chairman no less than four times (1856, 1860, 1862, 1864). He represented Williamstown in the Legislative Assembly in 1860-61 (6). Andrew Rider's photograph of Nelson Place, taken c1866 shows these shops as the most substantial in the block and adorned with a slender timber verandah. nelson place, 151-157 nelson place, thomas mason -
