James Forsyth's shop was one of the first in Orbost, dating from the 1880s. It was located in the southern section of Nicholson Street, on the eastern side. This building later became Frank and Gladys Matthews shop. The building was demolished in the early 2000s to make way for a Foodworks Supermarket. These items are from the Temple estate. George Temple (1832-1916) started Temple's store opposite Orbost Post Office. Packed stores to Bendoc area gold fields, also had a store in Cann River. This item is an example of a popular piece of jewelry worn by women in the early 20th century. These brooches were sold in a local store and could have been purchased for a local funeral.Black, bakelite brooch - three small sections form centre of brooch, one is a hexagonal cone-shape with hexagonal dome attached by link to smaller circular polygon attached by link to a smaller flat pentagon. Black mesh in the shape of wings form the backing featuring eight bakelite stars of varying sizes (two smaller stars missing from the assembly). The photograph shows the Royal Mail wagon outside Herbert's General Store in the main street of Orbost. This store was one of the first in Orbost, located in the lower (southern) section of Nicholson Streety. Lancelot Herbert had come to Orbost in c.1886 to become a partner in the store with Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Herbert bought out the partnership. Sunshine biscuits were made in Ballarat from 1921. During WW11 Sunshine biscuits devoted 80 percent of its output to army services. The company was twice devastated by fire. In 1923 the factory was completely destroyed and was rebuilt as a more modern factory on the same site. In 1939, a deliberately lit fire demolished the workshop. Sunshine biscuits continued to be sold until 1991. Biscuits were sold by weight from a large tin in the grocer's shop.This tin seems to be a commercial tin used in a grocery shop. These items were relics from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost, demolished mid 1970s. Herbert's Stores operated from c.1886 to 1970 in Orbost and also in Cann River. In Orbost, the main store was located on the s.e. corner of Nicholson Street and Ruskin Street. A feature of the store was the Lamson Cash-Carry mechanism which transported money and receipts to and from a central cashier. This was a rapid-wire mechanism attached to the ceiling of the shops. These items are significant because of their association with the Herbert's Stores in Orbost. Also, these itemns are a rare survivors of the Lamson cash-carry mechanisms which were installed in many larger shops in Australia during the first half of the 20th century.A collection of items from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost. George Temple, born in Yorkshire on 26/2/1832 was one of the earliest Orbost storekeepers. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the post office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. The store building eventually became part of Herbert's store when he died in 1917. This hessian bag was likely used for packaging and transporting goods from Cunninghame (later Lakes Entrance) to Orbost. George Temple was one of Orbost's earliest storekeepers. This hessian bag represents the earliest form of transport of goods, possibly by boat or maybe by wagon from Cunninghame to orbost. A large piece of hessian - probably an opened bag which was used for sending goods. The material is pinned around cardboard. It has black lettering stencilled on it."1850 G. Stuart Hats commenced manufacturing hats in about 1948 and closed their factory in Orbost around 1953 probably because of the high transport costs. The company's head factory was in Melbourne. The hats made in Orbost were sold all over Australia as well as in Melbourne at Myers and David Jones. Orme Andrews Ladies' Wear was the only store in Orbost to stock the locally produced Stuart Hats. The building became first a Dry Cleaners and then a private home.Stuart Hats was a significant manufacturing business in Orbost in the 1950's employing nearly 20 local people.A woven straw hat with a wide brim. These photographs were probably taken in the late 1940s - mid 1950s. 3275.1 was taken at the roundabout in Nicholson Street / Salisbury Street intersection looking south. On the right is the The Commonwealth Hotel and the Gippsland Northern Store can be seen on the right. The war memorial can be seen in the centre of the intersection. 3275.2 has been taken from a height (possibly from behind the hardware store) overlooking Orbost House in McLeod Street. The butter factory can be seen in the background. Back yard toilets and paling fences can be seen with a narrow lane for the sanitary truck. Mrs Ruth Hannah Macalister, 1861-1932, established “Orbost House” as a boarding house in about 1900. Following her demise “Orbost House” was taken over by her son, “Reg” and his wife and they continued the Macalister family‟s association until the accommodation house was purchased by “Slim” and Eileen Somerville and Lindsay and Joan Jensen, in partnership, in 1963. This is a photograph of the Saunders Family at Orbost 1888-89. It is Arthur and Agnes Saunders with their children, Beatrice, Cyril, Hilda and Vera. Arthur Scott Saunders was born 1864 in Orbost and died 3.12.1913 in Orbost where he is buried. He was the son of Son of Thomas Frederick Saunders and Lucy Beard Scott. He was a storekeeper at Orbost, a member of the early Show Committees, a Rechabite in 1893, and was a member of the Board of Guardians of the Church of England from 1894 to 1913 where he served as secretary and treasurer of the Board. His wife was Agnes Louisa Stuart Morriss who was born in 1862 and died 26-11-1938 at East Malvern and is buried in . Orbost cemetery. She sold the business in 1919 to Mr J. H, V. Dale. She left Orbost with her two daughters for East Malvern in April 1927. Saunders General Store was opened in 1900, overlapping part of the present Mensland and Coultons. The ―Melbourne Store‖ refers to it being a branch of their Melbourne store. The shop was burnt down in the early 1930‘s. Mr Carl Otto (Clyde) Drevermann was born at Lucknow and worked in various parts of Victoria before coming to Orbost in about 1902. In July 1902 he entered into partnership with Mr Edward Fisher Reynolds and the ironmongery, hardware and tinsmithing business was carried on by the new firm as Drevermann and Reynolds. In about 1905 Mr Drevermann assumed proprietorship and the tinsmith and plumbing section of the business was sold off to Mr Edward Swan. The ironmongery, hardware and timber business was known as Carl Dreverman & Co until 1917 when it was changed to Orbost Hardware and Timber Co. This shop had a row of nails on the window sill to prevent people sitting on the ledge. He married Carrie Bird and had children: Molly and Bill. Carl died in 1946.This is a pictorial record of a general store in early Orbost. It carried general merchandise, a variety of goods and staples needed by the surrounding community. The rural general store played a vital in regional communities throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century.. This photo shows a large paddock of beet (sugar beet) growing on a flat paddock, probably on the Snowy River flats. The fertility of the Snowy River flats is legendary. Although almost any crop could be grown, in the early years, because of the poor transport from this remote region of Victoria, only crops that could be stored, usually dried crops such as maize, could be produced. After the railway was constructed to Orbost in 1916, other crops could be produced and send by the Railways to Melbourne. Associated with crops such as sugar beet was the need for a huge amount of hand-labour, particularly for harvesting. Sugar beet was usually sent to a factory in Maffra. This photograph is significant because it is rare, and shows a field of sugar beet growing on the Snowy River flats, Orbost, in the 1930s. It shows the flourishing of agriculture in the inter-war period, and following the construction of the Railway to Orbost.This is a small b/w photograph, printed as a postcard. Connie Tomlinson was the daughter of Tomlinson, John (Mr) who worked in Temple's then Herbert's store, then his own business - very keen worker for starting Orbost Hospital. Father was also seecretary of Loyal Orbost Lodge for 21 years.Miss Tomlinson owned Connort (now Moogji building) and worked as a secretary at the Orbost Shire Council.Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . This box was crafted from a portion of one of the original oak trees in the Jarrahmond WW11 Avenue of Honour.The Avenue was planted in 1955 and linked the farms of the two servicemen from Jarrahmond who lost their lives in WWII. It consisted of English Oaks interspersed with flowering peaches and cherries. Wood for the box was collected in the early 1990's by Stan Weatherall following a windstorm. Stan had the timber rough-sawn into planks by local sawmiller Max Reynolds. The timber was stored for a number of years before being given to Don McLean.A hand-made oak box. The inside base is lined in green felt. The lid is single hinged. the front panel displays a radiating pattern in the grain of the oak wood that resembles the rising sun badge of the Australian Defence Forces. Two brass pins are symbols of Australian military regalia. Inside the box is an envelope with information and letters on the manufacture of the box and presentation to Orbost. This set was given to Mr and Mrs Henry Powell by Herbert's Store when their account was finalised. Herbert's Snowy River Store was at the lower end of Nicholson Street in Orbost.
