Book, Road register loose binder, 1953
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This is an Alphabetical Register of the streets in Warrnambool as listed by Warrnambool City Council officers. It appears to have been a working register used in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and information has been added to the entries as it became available and as Council works were carried out in these streets. It contains information on the locality, wards, allotment numbers, lodged plan numbers, footpaths and printed information from the Victorian Local Government Departments. It sometimes gives the origin of the name of the street and some other miscellaneous information is included. It is presumed that the information contained therein has now been stored electronically. This is a most important ledger as it contains much valuable historical information on Warrnambool streets. It will be of great use to researchers. This is a loose leaf binder with a black leather cover and a black metal and cord binding mechanism. The pages are unnumbered but there is provision for insertion or removal of pages and there are leather alphabetical tabs protruding from the pages. The pages have blue ruled lines with blue lined margins and headings. The streets in Warrnambool are listed alphabetically and the information in the register contains both typed and handwritten material. Map, Victorian Railway W'bool No1 & No2, 1897
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These two sheets show the 1897 plans drawn up by the Victorian Railways for the erection of the Warrnambool Railway Station building. It is a two-storey building still existing today. The railway came to Warrnambool in 1890 and they must have used temporary buildings for seven years before this railway building was erected. It had offices, booking counter and public facilities on the ground floor and housing for the Station Master on the first floor. The building erected was a typical design for country town railway stations and many of similar design were erected in the 1880s and 90s. These plans are important because they show clearly the design of the Warrnambool Railway Station buildings when they were first erected in the 1890s.They will be very useful for researchers. The coming of the railway was a significant event in Warrnambool’s history and did much to make the port and shipping a less viable proposition. These are two architect’s plans and drawings of the Warrnambool Railway Station building (1897). The drawings are black and white and the first plan shows the ground floor plan and the first floor plan and the outbuildings. The second plan shows drawings of the building with its elevation to the platform and its elevation to Merri Street. There are two stamps of the Railways Department, Melbourne. Map, Plans (5) showing Subdivisions of Warrnambool, 1989
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These plans have been drawn by Steve Hester for the Warrnambool City Council to illustrate the allotments in Warrnambool concerned with the subdivisions of 1989. The streets have not been named but there is an indication of the area with the identification of known buildings (eg Hospital) and the plan numbers of each allotment is clearly marked. These numbers corresponded to the plan numbers registered in card files and ledgers in the Warrnambool City Council offices. The scale of the plans was 1 to 5000. These plans are of considerable interest because they show Warrnambool street subdivisions of 1989 in illustrative form. They show how information was collated in the late 1980s before the widespread use of computer digital means to describe and store information. These are five hand-drawn sheets showing plans of sub-divisions in Warrnambool streets in 1989 (Warrnambool City Council material). The plans are multi-coloured (crayons) and show allotments with plan numbers. The first plan has much of the material torn off but the location is known to be in the Russells Creek area. Some of the green tape around the edges is missing. Plans two to five are almost intact and are bound with green tape. Artefact, Textile: Beaded mourning collar, Circa late 19th century
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...Black has for centuries been associated with mourning but it rose to new heights during the Victorian times with Queen Victoria wearing black from the time of her husband’s death in 1861 until her death in 1901. There were different stages of mourning from the severe plain black clothing of the first period to items of decoration or adornment such as this collar with other items such as brooches, hair and dress adornments which were used at the later stages of mourning. This second stage often went for extended periods especially for widows who often remained in mourning until or if they remarried. Other colours such as dark greys and purples were also acceptable as mourning clothes. Such was the practice in England that jet from Whitby was used extensively by the more well to do. Later on black glass was used which was cheaper. An item which relates to customs which were prevalent in the late 19th and early 20th centuryBlack beaded collar with seven lengths of beads coming from a section which joins at the back with a hook and eye. Booklet, Warrnambool Racing Club Annual Reports 1985,86, 1909
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. Document, Bachelders Anglo American Chemist, 1880s
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...These three programmes are advertising brochures for the entertainment of R.G. Bachelder’s Anglo-American Christy Minstrels. R.G. Bachelder was an American minstrel performer and showman. He and his company toured Australia in the 1870s and 1880s and for a time his partner was Horace Bent, regarded at the time as Australia’s greatest comedian. The three programmes date from the early 1880s, with the date of Programme One being 1882. The three programmes appear to feature only males with the man attractions being the African- American comedians, Sam Keenan and Alf Moynham and the singer, Beaumont Read. The latter was an American singer and songwriter and is regarded in some circles as the greatest male alto singer ever to appear on the Australian stage. He settled in Australia for a time. Other performers included W. Ball, C.S. Fredericks and T. Bergin. These three programmes are of considerable significance because they are original advertising brochures for Bachelder’s Anglo-American Christy Minstrels, a prominent entertainment company touring Australia in the second half of the 19th century. The items are also of significance because one of them is the brochure for a local Warrnambool concert held in the month of August in the Orderly Room in Kepler Street, Warrnambool This concert was a benefit for the famous alto singer Beaumont Read and was listed as the last performance of the company so it probably can be dated 1883. These are three original programmes for Bachelder’s Anglo-American Christy Minstrels. They date from the early 1880s. Programme One is a yellow sheet with black print and an ornamental border, Programme Two is a faded white sheet with black print and Programme Three is a white/cream sheet with black print and an ornamental border. Booklet, Allan's Community Songs, 1920s
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This is a book of music produced by Allan & Co. English- born George Allan (1826-1897) was a pioneer singing teacher in Melbourne who joined the music warehouse of Wilkie and Webster in 1862 and became the sole proprietor in 1874. By the late 1870s Allan & Co was the largest music warehouse in the Southern Hemisphere. It was bought by Brashs Stores in 1998 and since then it has had a series of other owners operating on a limited scale. Allan & Co. had a music warehouse in Warrnambool later in the 20th century. The supplier of this music item in Warrnambool was Mrs Fanny Rowan (nee Lavery) who had a music store at 143 Liebig Street after 1918. Later, in the 1930s, she had a music and stationery shop in the Oddfellows Hall and, as the owner of the building, also operated the Plaza Cinema in that building. This item is of some interest mainly because it was sold by Mrs Fanny Rowan, a prominent Warrnambool businesswoman in the first half of the 20th century. It is also of interest because it is an example of the music produced by Allan and Co, at one time the largest supplier of music books in Australia. Also Warrnambool had for some time an Allans Music Store at 76 Liebig Street. This is a soft-cover book of 50 pages containing the music of well-known community songs. The pages were stapled but the staples have been removed and there are rust marks and some tearing where the staples were removed. Balance Sheet, Warrnambool Permanent Building and Investment Society 1872, 1872
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...The Warrnambool permanent Building and Investment Society was established in May 1869. It relied on investors buying shares in the society, thereby providing the funds which were available to be borrowed to use in the building of houses. A considerable number of houses in Warrnambool would have been built using this scheme. The stated trustees in 1872 were Samuel Macgregor, C A Cramer, James Astley Bromfield, and the committee comprised of James Hider, W. W. Jamieson, James Coulstock, Archibald MacFarlane, Robert Newton, David Evans, NT C Stelling and W Jones. The bankers were the national Bank of Australasia. It had some difficulties in the 1870’s but was still operating well into the 1930’s where it again was not putting through the volume of business compatible with its resources and it had been found necessary to pay off a considerable number of fixed deposits and Investors’ shares. There is little mention of it after the mid 1930’s. This document provides details of an organization which operated in Warrnambool for over 60 years and proved beneficial to homebuilders and investors alike. It also has a number of well- known local names listed in their positions of operating the building society.Cream watermarked paper folded to four pages. The Bill was for two dozen ales ordered on November 4th 1873 and for 6 dozen ales ordered on November 24th 1873 (cost £6-18-0). The bill was paid in February 1874. Undertaker's Cards x 3, Beattie and Phillips, 1930s or 40s
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This card is one that was given to those who were designated to hold the tassels of the pall at a funeral conducted by Beattie and Phillips of Warrnambool. A pall was a cloth used to cover a casket or coffin at a funeral. The pall often had four or more tassels on the edges and these people, usually men, would hold the tassels when the coffin was being carried into the church and out of the church. The pall was removed before burial. It was also in some services unfolded and folded in a ceremonial manner when it was placed on the coffin and when it was removed. Other men would have been designated as pallbearers to carry the coffin to and from the church. The firm of Beattie and Phillips was commenced in Warrnambool in the 1860s, by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips, initially in Koroit Street and after 1928 in Fairy Street. James Beattie, the son of Christopher, was the proprietor from 1896 to 1945 when James Leahy took over but traded for some years as Beattie and Phillips. The business was sold in 2000 and an undertaking business still operates from the same premises. The other two cards relate to part of the main mourning party who would have been allocated seats in the funeral vehicles These are very interesting cards as it is a great example of funeral practices 70 to 80 years ago. The practices may in many cases be the same today but cards such as these are no longer in use. It is also important as items connected with Beattie and Phillips, one of the two best-known undertaking businesses in Warrnambool’s history. This are three small buff-coloured lightweight cards given to those at funerals who were designated p[laces or parts in the service. Booklet, Thompson & O'Farrell, Rules & Regulations scale of fees Cemetary, 1902 (original edition)
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This booklet gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Fees for the Warrnambool General Cemetery as from 1902. The booklet rescinded the Rules and Regulations of 1855 and amongst the 1902 Rules it is noted that no catacombs or wooden structures were allowed by the Trustees. It was also noted that no child under ten was permitted into the cemetery grounds unless under adult supervision. The charge for an adult burial was £1 and ten shillings for a child under ten. The Warrnambool Cemetery is in Otway Road, Warrnambool and was first gazetted in 1853 with Mr Whittet as the first Sexton. This booklet is of considerable interest because it gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Charges of the Warrnambool General Cemetery as laid down in 1902. The Trustees at the time were William Ardlie, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Samuel Nettleton, a well-known Warrnambool shopkeeper and J.H.Allan, a member of a pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a small booklet containing the Rules and Regulations of the Warrnambool General Cemetery. It contains four double-sided pages with printed material on all of the pages. The cover is pale yellow and the printing on the front cover has a black edging. There is some silverfish damage on the page edges. Booklet, Grand Centenary process, 1947
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This is a program of the Centenary Procession that took place in Warrnambool in 1947 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the city’s founding in 1847. It was originally intended to celebrate the 100th anniversary in 1940 but these celebrations were postponed because of World War Two. In 1947 centenary celebrations were held but on a less lavish style. 1947 was a more appropriate year as 1847 was the year of the first land sales for Warrnambool and the arrival of the first European settlers in the town. The 1947 celebrations included a Grand Procession which was estimated to have been watched by 20,000 people. A similar number saw the bonfire and fireworks display in Albert Park the same evening. The celebrations lasted a week and included a choral thanksgiving festival in the Botanic Gardens, a massed band display and a ‘Warrnambool Can Make It’ exhibition of local manufactures. The well-known historian and Town Clerk at the time, Henri Worland took a prominent role in the organizing of the celebrations. This little booklet is of considerable importance because it contains a short description of the floats and the names of those connected with the various floats of the Warrnambool Centenary Procession of 1947. It not only gives us a better idea of what and who were in the procession but it now enables us to better label the many photographs we have of this procession and to identify the people in the photographs. The program is a valuable source of information for historians. It also is a good example of the type of celebratory procession that was popular 70 years ago. This is a paper program of the Warrnambool 1947 Centenary procession. It has four pages and a buff-coloured cover. The front cover has a sepia-toned photograph of the first car purchased in Warrnambool (1906) and on the back cover there is an advertisement for Lane’s Bus Services. The inside front cover has an advertisement for Guyett and Sons Furniture Store and there are other advertisements throughout the pages. The printed text on buff-coloured paper gives details of the 29 floats in the ‘Mechanized’ Section and of the 27 floats in the ‘Back to the Horse Pageant’ Section. The pages were stapled but the staples have been removed. There has been some silverfish damage. Document, Docket Dr Bright's Phosphodyne, Mid 19th century
... Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc. 2 Gilles ...This label accompanied a bottle of Dr Bright’s Phosphodyne. It was a form of medicine also known as ozonic oxygen which was developed and patented in 1869 by Dr Charles Bright, a 19th century Resident Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital London, The medicine claimed to ease ‘indigestion, liver complaints, nervous debility, female complaints, premature decline, local weakness and spermatorrhea’. It was widely sold by chemists throughout Australia in the 19th century and in this case was supplied by the Warrnambool chemist, James Astley Bromfield. He was a significant person in Warrnambool’s history as he produced the 1856 map of the Warrnambool district showing all the original landholders, a seminal resource for historians today. Bromfield had a chemist shop in Warrnambool from 1854 to the late 1880s, initially in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street (number 80 and later number 78). Bromfield was very active in local community affairs. This label is of considerable interest as it shows the use in the 19th century of medicine that today would be labelled ‘quack’. It is of particular interest as it was supplied by James Astley Bromfield’s chemist shop and he is an important early identity in Warrnambool, involved in many activities in the town. He was a Justice of the Peace, a Trustee of the Savings Bank, Chairman of the Western Steam Navigation Company, a Director of the Gasworks and on the committees of the Harbour Committee, the Fire Brigade and the Anglers Protection Society. He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1858-60; 1865-1870) and a Shire Councillor (1875-1883). This is a sheet of paper that accompanied a bottle of Dr Brights’ Phosphodyne medicine. It is buff-coloured with black printed material. It is in two pieces and dog-eared at the edges.warrnambool, dr bright's phosphodyne, james bromfield chemist, warrnambool chemists
