This book is a direct result of an incident on 16 March 2000 when Australian surfing champion Nat Young was physically assaulted at Angourie Beach after an altercation in the water. The book contains a series of eleven articles exploring the issue of aggression (rage) in the surfing community. The book features a forward by Drew Kampion and articles by a number of surfers including Nat Young, Derek Reilly, Nick Carroll, Fred Pawle and Torquay local, Gordon Stammers. This book is the definitive history of the surf travels by Peter Troy. Troy's travels are the stuff of legends. An original and influential figure in the early days of surfing at Bells Beach, Troy left Australia in 1963 and roamed the planet with surfboard under arm from Europe to Hawaii, South America to South Africa, introducing surfing to Brazil and discovering untold perfect waves like Nias off the coast of Sumatra. Propeller from HMAS Bayonet, Walkers Ltd
Bayonet was one of 20 Attack class patrol boats built for the Royal Australian Navy between 1967 and 1969 by Walkers Ltd of Maryborough Qld . In the 1960s, Australia became more closely involved in events in the Asia-Pacific region. This led to improved surveillance and control of our enormous coastline, especially the northern approaches. Patrol boats controlled illegal fishing, smuggling and immigration, search and rescue, and occasional inshore survey work. Her hull is steel and the superstructure is aluminium. It is armed for small-scale encounters, with one 40-mm Bofors gun and two 0.5-inch Browning machine guns to fire warning shots across the bow of a suspect vessel. She was 32.6 m long and 6.1 m wide, 150 tons, powered by two paxman diesel engines and capable of about 24 knots. . A sister ship featured in the popular ABC-TV series Patrol Boat. The Bayonet conducted patrol duties around Australian waters until her scuttling by defence maritime services on 21 September 1999 in 82 m of water off Torquay in Victoria. propeller, hmas bayonet -

Doris Mercy Willmott was born in May 1896 in Stamford Hill, London, the eldest of three daughters of Albert and Minnie Willmott. The family lived in various parts of north London until the beginning of the First World War, when they moved to Redhill in Surrey. It was in Redhill that Doris met her future husband, Frederick John (Jack) Bennett. Although Jack Bennett returned to Melbourne in March 1919, he and Doris continued to correspond and they were engaged in March 1923. She came to Melbourne on her own, and was married in the Congregational Church in Canterbury on 23 December 1923. In 1937, the Bennett family moved back to the United Kingdom, spending the war years in Uxbridge and Torquay. The family returned to Melbourne in October 1946, after the deaths of Doris’ parents. The family lived at 12 Stanhope Grove, Camberwell and 51 The Ridge, Canterbury before Jack died in February 1952. After this Doris moved to 12 Stanley Grove, Canterbury, her home until c. 1970 when she moved to 25 Corhampton Road, North Balwyn. She died in May 1980 in Princeton Nursing Home, 3 Bellett Street, Camberwell. (Adapted from notes provided by Sue Barnett, the donor).The collection of evening clothes owned and worn by Doris Mercy Bennett, of which this item is one, date from the 1930s and may have been purchased in Australia or in the United Kingdom. Each of the items, apart from the evening dress, which has a few minor tears in the lace, is of fine quality and evidences Doris Bennett’s love of glamour and style. While the evening dress and the mantilla are of the same fabric, the two capes might have been worn with the dress as alternative fashion accessories. None of the items has a maker’s mark, however each displays evidence of fine dressmaking skills. It is however probable that the two fitted capes were commercially made.Black silk chiffon or georgette loose-fitted evening capelet, decorated with a wide border of silvred sequins. Sequins are also used in the body of the cape, either individually or in circles. An example of the innovative winged keel design based on the Australia 2 yacht (Americas Cup winner 1982). The Star Fin was a collaboration between Australian pro surfer, Cheyne Horan, and Australia 2 fin designer Ben Lexcen. Horan won 1984 Bells Beach surfing festival riding a board using this fin design. This fin design represents a radical departure from surfboard design thinking at that time (early 1980s) Most people were concentrating on multi fin designs Mark Richards with high performance twin fin designs, then Simon Anderson's 3 fin 'Thruster' design. Cheyne Horan employed the talents of innovative yachting designer Ben Lexcen (who designed the Americas Cup winning Australia 2) to design a unique Star Fin which would provide greater hold for a single fin at critical angles. Horan proved the effectiveness of this design by winning the 1984 Rip Curl Pro at Bells beach using a board mounted with one of the Star Fins. Programme, Australia 1970 Fifth World Surfboard Riding Championships, Bells Beach, Victoria, Circa 1970
The souvenir programme was produced for the Fifth World Surfboard Riding Championships at Bells Beach, Victoria. The championships were the first international surfing contest held at Bells Beach. The finals of this event were held at Johanna Beach, also a first. Document, Human Impact on Australian Beaches (Results from SOS95 Beach Survey), 1/5/1996 (estimated)
Human Impacts on Australian Beaches was a landmark environmental study which provided a 'snapshot' of the health of 1612 beach areas around Australia. This nationwide study (which built on the success of the 1994 State of Our Surf Report) was put together by the Surfrider Foundation Australia with the support of more then 340 individuals and 70 organisations around Australia. The report was authored by surfer/environmentalist/artist Michael Legge-Wilkinson from Newcastle, New South Wales. Human Impacts was launched officially by Peter Garrett, leader of Australian rock band Midnight Oil at the Bondi Pavilion, Bondi Beach in May 1996.Human Impacts built on the success of the 1994 State Of Our Surf Report, released by the Surfrider Foundation Australia in 1994. Human Impacts was the first major report to specifically examine the environmental health of 1612 of Australia's beaches. A limited 500 copies of this report were produced, the majority of which went to education institutions, libraries, community groups and government departments. This surfboard was ridden by Australian surfer, Layne Beachley at competitions around the world for the 2003 ASP Professional World Surfing Tour. In 2003 Layne won her record sixth straight World Professional Surfing Championship. Layne would go on to win the word title for a record 7th time in 2006. Layne Beachley learned to surf at Manly Beach in Sydney. She is the first woman in the history of sport to win 7 professional world titles.The surfboard is of world significance. Kelly Slater is contemporary surfing's dominant competitive presence and a truly inspirational surfer. By the end of 2009 Kelly had won a record 9 professional World Surfing Championships. This surfboard is one of Kelly's from 1996 shaped by world renowmed shaper Al Merick from Channel Island Surfboards, Santa Barbara, California. This board was ridden by Kelly in Indonesia in 1996 and featured on the cover of Surfer Magazine in November 1996 in a sequence shot at speed reef Grajagan.This surfboard was ridden by Kelly Slater throughout 1996 and most famously featured on the cover of Surfer Magazine. In 1996 Kelly Slater was at the peak of his surfing powers. During this year he won his 4th World Professional Surfing championship equalling the record held by Australian Mark Richards. This poster was used to promote the Australian release of SOMEWHERE NEAR TAPACHULA February-April 2010. The film was shot on location in Tapachula, Mexico near the Guatemala border and tells the story of the orphanage Mision Mexico exstablished by two Australians Alan and Pamela Skuse. Surfing was introduced to the children at the orphanage in 2004 and surfing has now become an important part of the weekly program but has also played a key role in improving the lives of the children in the orphanage. SOMEWHERE NEAR TAPACHULA is a unique surfing documentary which explores the social impact of surfing on a community of children living in a Mexican orphanage run by two Australians. Through a series of interviews the film follows the lives of a number of the children as they struggle with issues of identity, family and the harsh economic reality of growing up in a poor Mexican coastal town. This Ockanui Hollow Plywood Surfboard was shaped by Peter Watson and his father at their family home in Murrumbeena in 1959 (Peter was aged 16 at the time). The surfboard was based on a series of full size plans purchased from the USA. The surfboard is made from marine ply, ureal/resorcinal glue, marine varnish, copper nails, the skeg (fin) is Huon Pine made from an old kitchen sink drain board.This surfboard is an excellent example of the type of hollow wooden surfboards being made in the USA and Australia in 1959. First Love is a feature film length surf film that tells the story of three young female surfers. The film follows the lives of Jess, Nikki and India as they follow their passion for surfing growing up together and competing against one another. Surfing brings the girls together but they are all different in their own way. The film culminates in a surf trip to Hawaii where they meet a number of professional female surfers. The film also features surfers Stephanie Gilmore (world champion), Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton. First Love was produced by an all female creative team and officially launched at the Surf World Museum Torquay on 4th April 2010. The film had its festival debut at the DUNGOG FILM FESTIVAL in May 2010 and its international debut at the HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL in October 2010. First Love is the first surf feature film shot in Australia with an all female cast/crew. A comedy surf film featuring Tom Carroll, Kong Elkerton, Bryce Ellis, Mark Sainsbury, and Ross Clarke-Jones as the Wiz. The Wiz stumbles on an old book about making your own wax and mixes a batch which magically transports him and his friends to some of the world's best surf spots. Music by popular Australian band GANGgajangMAD WAX had a national theatrical release in 1987. The film was shown at surf clubs, pubs and other surf film related venues during this period. The film is significant for the surfers who appear in the film (2 time World Champion Tom Carroll) and the 'loose' narrative thread which was common place in many surf films during the eighties. The film features Mark Sainsbury a popular professional surfer from New South Wales who suddenly died of a brain anueryism on 6th AUgust 1992. The poster and cover art for the VHS case were done by noted Quiksilver designer/artist Peter Webb. MAD WAX had its World Premier at the Enmore Theatre, Enmore, New South Wales on Saturday 28th February, 1987. This colour sticker was produced and distributed Australia wide by the SAVE BASTION POINT CAMPAIGN to support their environmental campaign to stop a breakwall being built across the popular surf break - Bastion Point in Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia. The breakwall is supported by the local fishing community and local council.
