Document, In the Beginning (H31), 1973
... to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers... to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers ...A document written in 1973 with a summary of the first few years of Legacy. It relates the story of Legatee Stan Savige being inspired by Major General Sir Gellibrand to start a club in Melbourne with the broad objective to help the further the interests of ex-servicemen (by business reciprocity). Stan Savige had 'within a few weeks had gathered a small band of ex-servicemen, mostly from his old Brigade, and on 25th September 1923 a Club of about 50 members was established in Melbourne. It was given the name of 'Legacy' and its members in due course came to be known as 'Legatees'. ' Two years later the focus changed to the families of departed comrades. In September 1925 'a quiet and experienced Legatee pointed to the Families, now two years older, of their comrades who had not come home, the name and destiny of Legacy, hitherto not fully grasped and with its inner significance of Challenge, Trust and Responsibility, flashed for the first time into full and clear focus and Legacy had, in that realisation, found both its goal and its Soul.' The document is not signed but a file reference on the bottom is 'JHBA:WF 16.1.73" and the note from the Public Relations Committee indicates the author as being Legatee JHB Amstrong (Brian). The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. (Fifty Years On is at 01506). The notation H31 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A summary of the beginnings of Legacy written in its 50 anniversary year by Legatee Brian Armstrong.White foolscap paper with black type x 2 pages, a summary of Legacy's history written in 1973.Handwritten H31 in red pen. ... Gower and Eddards. According to the SMB Annual Report of 1914... Gower and Eddards. According to the SMB Annual Report of 1914 ...The large plaster Illisos depicted in the back of this image is still held by Federation University Australia. The Ballarat Technical Art School (No. 10) was part of the Ballarat School of Mines and was established in 1907. After conducting classes in various locations around Ballarat a custom built art school was erected on the site of the former Ballarat Circuit Court House, previously used as the initial building of the Ballarat School of Mines. Examples of drawings undertaken by students, as well as some plaster castes are held in the University of Ballarat Historical Collection. The Ballarat Technical art School is the oldest continuous Tertiary Art School in Australia. Sir Alexander Peacock opened the new Ballarat Technical Art School building in July 1915. It cost 10,000 pounds and was constructed by the Public Works Department from plans drawn by the then Art School Principal, Herbert H. Smith. The building contractors were Messrs Gower and Eddards. According to the SMB Annual Report of 1914 'the internal upholstering and fittings have all been carried out in Australian timbers, with Queensland maple largely used throughout.' The building could be described as federation-art deco in style. It features sandstone insertion with sandstone string coursing. The base of the building is rusticated sandstone. The building is functional in design with large metal windows in the south wall to ensure good light into the studios. The northern wall has standard double hung windows. The interior of the building features a carved wooden staircase and cast iron ceiling vents. The rear drawing studios could be made into one large studio by opening panelled timber doors. This opening features classical plaster pilasters with a pediment above. Annual Report of 1914 'the internal upholstering and fittings ...The former Ballarat Circuit Court Building, later the first building of the Ballarat School of Mines, was demolished to make way for a new custom built Art School building. Sir Alexander Peacock opened the Ballarat Technical Art School in July 1915. It cost 10,000 pounds and was constructed by the Public Works Department from plans drawn by the then Art School Principal, Herbert H. Smith. The building contractors were Messrs Gower and Eddards. According to the SMB Annual Report of 1914 'the internal upholstering and fittings have all been carried out in Australian timbers, with Queensland maple largely used throughout.' Before this building was constructed art and craft classes were held in various buildings around Ballarat. The building could be described as federation-art deco in style. It features sandstone insertion with sandstone string coursing. The base of the building is rusticated sandstone. The relief stone panel on the front with the words "Technical Art School" features stone pilaster brackets and corbels. In the centre front can be seen rectangular sandstone pediment with decorative stonework incorporating the date of construction. The windows in the lower floor feature five supporting keystones whereas the upper windows have sandstone lintels. The building also features decorative cast iron downpipes. The entrance on the northern side has attractive leadlight glazing in an art deco style. Above the door a miner's lamp and pick are featured in the design. The building is functional in design with large metal windows in the south wall to ensure good light into the studios. The northern wall has standard double hung windows. The interior of the building features a carved wooden staircase and cast iron ceiling vents. The rear drawing studios can be made into one large studio by opening panelled timber doors. Plan, Ballarat School of Mines Future Development: A Southern Terminal to Lydiard Street, 1947, 09/12/1947
... . In the annual report of 1947 the President said: "These transfers.... In the annual report of 1947 the President said: "These transfers ...In 1947 Percy Everett, Chief Architect for the Victorian Government, drew up plans to accomodate the growth in student numbers on the Ballarat School of Mines site. It was an era of government buildings surrounding the Ballarat School of Mines campus either being transfered to the school or foreshadowed for transfer. In 1947 two Red Cross huts were transferred from Victoria Park to the western side of the former Ballarat Supreme Court (later Courthouse Theatre) for use by Wool Classing and Motor Mechanics. In the same year additional facilities were provided for Pottery due to the increase in enrolments and a large brick classroom was built at the rear of the Ballarat Junior Technical School Building. In the annual report of 1947 the President said: "These transfers are, however, only temporary expedients and indicate the pressing need for more buildings of a permanent nature". By the end of the year the School Council decided to request the Education Department of Victoria to proceed with the implementation of the School's long-range plan whch had received approval earlier and to treat it as an urgent post-war requirement. After much communication a plan for a six-storied building, flanked by two three storied buildings was planned to be built on the site of the Ballarat Gaol was developed. The plan was sent to the Education Department for the Minister's Approval. It is not know if approval was granted, but the building did not proceed, possibly becausse the Ballarat Gaol was still very miuch in use. When a tertiary division of the Ballarat School of Mines was being developed in 1967 it corresponded with the closure of the Ballarat Gaol. It was determined that the Lydiard Street South site had no room for future growth so a new campus was sought. The new campus was purchased at Mt Helen, and was initially known as the Ballarat Insittute of Advanced Education. In 1976, when the Ballarat Teachers' College merged into the structure, the campus became known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and it was no longer a part of the Ballarat School of Mines. Plans for a proposed building to replace the Ballarat Gaol buildings. The proposed building was never built, the concept being replaced by a new teritary facility at Mt Helen. buildings, percy everett, ballarat school of mines battery, ballarat technical art school, engineering workshops, machine shop, ballarat junior technical school, architectural plans, ballarat school of mines, smb campus -

... coordinators annual report 2004 and 2005 album (record 00001), Andrew... coordinators annual report 2004 and 2005 album (record 00001), Andrew ...This photograph was taken at Wooragee Hall on Wednesday the 28th of April 2004 called 'Queries about Quolls' and shows a Quoll Presentation by Andrew Murray at Mt Pilot, Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park. The photograph shows (L - R) Jerry Alexander, Unknown, Unknown, Mary Prowse, Tony Prowse. The event was hosted by the Wooragee Landcare Group and was led by Andrew Murray (of Parks Victoria), President of the South-East Forest Spotted-tailed Quoll Working Group and one of Victoria's leading authorities in quolls. As the name of the event would suggest, this session provided attendees with insight and general information on quolls, including the characteristics of quolls, the habitat of quolls and the techniques that can be used when searching for quolls which was part of a wider project aimed at protecting the endangered species of the tiger quoll, also known as the spotted-tailed quoll, an animal that once inhabited Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park. This particular photo shows a group of attendees looking at a typical quoll nesting site in a rock crevice. According to an article included in the Wooragee Landcare group coordinators annual report 2004 and 2005 album (record 00001), Andrew Murray had been tasked to train a team of Department of Sustainability and Environment staff and volunteers from the local area (Beechworth and Wooragee) in the detection skills needed to establish whether the tiger quoll still inhabited the Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park and had survived after a bush fire in 2003 had burned through the area where they would normally have been found. The Tiger Quoll is the largest of the quoll species. Largely resembling a cross between a possum and a cat, the quoll is distinctive due to the white spots that are often found all over its brown fur. This photograph is significant as it provides evidence of a project undertaken by the Wooragee Landcare Group to educate themselves and members of the public on the tiger quoll in the early 2000s in an attempt to better understand and protect the species. The Wooragee Landcare Group has been instrumental in the co-ordination of programs relating to biodiversity protection in the local area, providing great assistance to landholders.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paperReverse: WAN NA 0ANA2N0 AN2 0 1636 / [PRINTED] (No.4) / 918wooragee, wooragee hall, wooragee landcare, wooragee landcare group, quoll, spotted-tailed quoll, tiger quoll, queries about quolls, south east forest spotted-tailed quoll working group, andrew murray quolls, mount pilot chiltern national park, quoll species, endangered quoll, andrew murray, beechworth, landcare group, mount pilot -

His childhood interest in horses began with the draft horses kept at the bluestone stable and barn at Darlingsford. When the stables were empty in the late 1980s visit, he vividly recalled the names of the horses he had handled in his youth. When the draft horse became obsolete with the introduction of tractors and trucks this interest continued with the breeding and training of harness racers. Darlingsford Drafts and Ponies. Memorabilia - Object, Ballarat School of Mines Boer War Memorial for Alfred Gresham Johnston, c1901
... .' The SMB Annual Report of 1901 recognised the loss of one... Victorian soldiers.' The SMB Annual Report of 1901 recognised ...Former SMB mining student Alfred Johnston was the son of Charles Johnston of Cork, Ireland, and Elizabeth Jameson, the family owning a large furniture store in Fitzroy. Alfred joined the Fifth Victorian (Mounted Riffles) contingent at the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. The October 1901 Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) Students Magazine reported 'Alf. Johnston's gone. The news came as a shock to all of us at the school. He who was with us a few short months ago, in all strength of sturdy manhood, has met a soldier's death in South Africa, and we sincerely mourn his loss…. His heart was in the school, and he did his best to further its interests … His last act on leaving Australian shores was to send a telegram from Albany to Prof. Mica Smith, to whom he was warmly attached, wishing the School and all connected with it "Good-bye". In his short, all to short, life of 29 years, he had more adventure than falls the lot of most men, and possibly the spirit of adventure, and also, of duty, prompted him to throw in his lot with the "colors," and leave for the front. The news of his death comes to us with added weight of sadness when we remember that he was one of the organisers of the School entertainment last year to help swell the fund for the erection of a statue to fallen Victorian soldiers.' The SMB Annual Report of 1901 recognised the loss of one of their students: 'Mr Johnston was, until the date of his leaving for active military service in South Africa, one of our students. While here besides being regarded as a general favourite for his urbanity and manliness, he was noted as a faithful, diligent, and most successful student. The news of Lieutenant Johnston's death cast quite a gloom over the school and it was early decided that in addition to a letter of condolence sent to his parents a bronze tablet, suitably inscribed, be erected to his memory in some prominent part of the school. On the 4th November last the ceremony of unveiling the memorial tablet was performed by Professor A. Mica Smith in the presence of several members of the late Lieutenant A.G. Johnston's family, the President and Members of Council, the Staff and Students of the School, and a number of prominent citizens.Brass shield used to commemorate the death of former Ballarat School of Mines graduate Alfred G.
