The men are obviously travelling up the river. There is a motor on the back of the boat. The luggage includes a Gladstone bag, suit cases and boxes, indicating they have been travelling a long distance.This photograph is significant because it shows the type of transport available in the 1920's. Also it shows the conditions the three men travelled in. The boat was small, heavily laden with a simple motor. River traffic in 1920 would have been sparse. These two cards have been sent In 1929 by two early Warrnambool amateur radio persons to William (Bill) Douglas, an amateur radio person with the call sign, VK3GA. The cards are QSL cards, sent as a result of radio contacts being made between two amateur radio persons. Bill Douglas (1898-1986) was a Victorian schoolteacher who was the first licensed amateur radio person in the Otway Ranges district. He was licensed in January 1929 and these cards refer to radio contacts in the July of that year. The cards do not feature the call signs of the contacts but were standard cards used by amateur radio people who did not have personalised cards at the time,. One card was sent by J.F. Anderson (VK3WN) whose address at the time was 100 Foster Street, Warrnambool. He was possibly connected to the family of James and Jane Anderson who lived for some time in Foster Street but later went farming in the Nullawarre district. The other card was sent by W. Brown of 23 Mackay Crescent South Warrnambool (call sign unknown). Angus Mackay enlisted on 22.4.1915 in the 7th Reinforcements 5th Battalian AIF No 2486. He later transfered to the 57th Battalian AIF. Wounded in action and while being treated in the field a shell burst overhead killing him instantly on 19.8.1916. The wallet and photos belonged to his best mate George Freeman No 2485. They joined up together both aged 18 years and went wherever the other went.The wallet is a dark green in colour. It consists of three layers of material. The outer cover and inner section are both cotton and sewn together around the edges. Where the photos sit there is a fine layer of felt that sits over the photo to protect it. The photos are Post Card style copies of the originals for display purposes.The wallet has no markings or inscriptions. The grave photo on the Cross has the following; “IN LOVING MEMORY, KILLED IN ACTION, No 2486, SIG ANGUS MACKAY, HQ S” The rest is hidden under the flowers.
