This folder contains photographs, advertisements and a sample of a piece of blanket from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. This mill was officially opened in South Warrnambool in 1910 following the establishment of a local public company. The first manager was John Bennett from Yorkshire, England. The operations of the mill expanded with new buildings enabling the business to double in size by 1915. In the 1940s the factory was employing 700 people. In 1968 the factory was sold to Dunlop Australia but was sold again in 1982 to Onkaparinga Woollen Company. In 1983 Mcquarie Worsteds took over the factory with the business then known as Warrnambool Textiles. In 2000 the mill closed and most of the buildings were later demolished for a housing estate. This item is an attractive and informative memento of one of Warrnambool’s most important businesses of the past. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill operated for 90 years and employed many local people. The photographs are of particular interest.This is a rectangular-shaped sheet of buff-coloured lightweight cardboard. It has been folded twice to create six pages in a folder. Three pages contain black and white photographs of the woollen mill operations and two pages contain advertising material with black and white images. One page has a cream blanket piece of material attached to the page by two staples and this has the brand name stitched onto the right hand corner This piece of blanket also has a paper guarantee card attached by staples. These two badges came from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. The badges appear to have belonged to Agnes Ardlie who was known to have been a keen sportswoman. The Warrnambool Racing Club was founded in the 1870s and annually produced badges for members, both men and women. Female membership of the Warrnambool Golf Club was well established by 1890 and the course then was in Albert Park. These two badges are of interest as having local provenance, belonging to a member or members of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century..1 This is a metal badge in an elliptical shape with gold edging. The image on the badge shows a horse and jockey clearing a hurdle with wording around the image. The colours used are blue, red, gold and green. The badge has a metal clip at the top with a blue cord attached. The back of the badge has wording imprinted on it. .2 This is an oval-shaped metal badge with an image of two golf clubs in blue and gold and the word ‘Associates’ in gold and green. These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale , retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in "Cyclopedia of Victoria' as the "largest and best appointed pharmacy in Victoria'. Kennedy was Vice President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool. He was for some time President of the Mechanics Institute and the Warrnambool Hospital and a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club. He also made locally perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time-Federation, Nellie Melba etc.. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house 55 Canterbury Road "Ivanhoe" still stands (2019) The use of a lighthouse in his advertising and on his bottles is of particular interest. This recipe booklet has been produced as a fund-raiser for the West Warrnambool State School. The production of recipe books such as this one was a popular school project in the 1960s and 70s. West Warrnambool School No. 4899 opened in February 1966 with an enrolment of 183 children and a staff of 8 teachers under the Head Teacher J.J.Godfrey. The West Warrnambool School still operates today in Hoddle Street Warrnambool.This booklet is retained as an example of the recipe books produced for fund raising purposes by non-profit organizations in the second half of the 20th century. It is also a memento of West Warrnambool State School. This is a soft cover booklet with a green front cover with an image of a fry pan and cream printing. The back cover is cream. One of these booklets contains the Minutes of Procedure of the Annual Session of the Municipal Association of Victoria in October 1939. The other three items are booklets containing the rules of golf as approved by the Golf Club of St Andrews in 1920. The four items belonged to Rolf Crawley who had a private surveying, engineering and architects practice in Warrnambool and was also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. Rolf Crawley’s grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The items came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the items, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia, from the estate of Michael Hand. These booklets are of minor interest as items that belonged to Rolf Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century..1 This is a buff-coloured booklet of 121 pages. This is an old tin which has been used as a first aid box by a scout group in Warrnambool. It appears to date from about the 1950s. Today there are two scout groups in Warrnambool and one in Allansford. The Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Raglan Parade and Kepler Street and the Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets and in Otway Road. This tin is of minor interest as an item that belonged to a local scout group in the mid 20th century.This is a rectangular metal box painted cream but with the paint peeling. The metal handle is rusted and there are two metal catches. On the side is a red cross taped on and a red cross painted on the top. There is a black hand-painted name. The Australian Military Forces buttons were worn by Australian troops in World Wars One and Two. The Australian Commonwealth buttons date from the Edwardian era (1901-1910)These buttons are examples of the buttons used by the Australian Army. This tool is one of a collection of tools that are believed to have belonged to the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy and came to Warrnambool where Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie to establish the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued after the deaths of the two founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved with the management of the Mechanics Institute. This tool is of interest, firstly because it is a good example of a vintage tool and secondly because it is a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a small hand drill with a metal piece containing a composite material handle at one end (for one hand) and a metal piece at the other end for the insertion of a drill. Attached to the main metal piece is a circular piece of metal with spokes and a wooden turning handle (for the other hand). This item was donated by the daughter of Ena Heazlewood, a former Warrnambool resident. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920. She worked as a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married Jack Heazlewood, also of Warrnambool. He was serving on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at that time. Later they moved to Sydney. Pantaloons were worn particularly in the 19th century to cover the legs under voluminous dresses such as crinolines. This item may have belonged to earlier female members of either the Todd or the Heazlewood families.This item is of interest as an example of vintage women’s clothing and as an item donated by the daughter of a former Warrnambool resident. This dress was donated by Judith McShane, the daughter of Ena Heazlewood, the maker of the dress. It was the First Communion dress worn by the daughter, Judith about 1952. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920. She was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool and in 1942 married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S Sydney at the time. They later lived in Sydney. The material for this First Communion dress was brought back from Japan by Jack Heazlewood, on naval duties there at the end of World War Two.This dress is of interest as one made by a former Warrnambool resident and as an example of a dress made 70 years ago for a special event in a child’s life (First Communion Day) This is a hand-sewn child’s dress made of embroidered silk. The dress has a Peter Pan collar made of satin with a fluted satin band around the waist. The long sleeves are set in and the top has three press studs to close the opening at the front. The material is gathered at the waist and hemmed at the bottom. It is also an example of the style of children’s clothing worn 70 years ago. This is a child’s coat, hand-sewn and made of white cotton (towelling or boucle type material). The coat is lined with white cotton material and has a pointed shirt collar with inset sleeves and flares out slightly from the chest area. The gasworks in Anstruther St, allowed the streets of Echuca to be lit at night, therefore improving the safety of the citizens of the town. The gasworks were operational for many year providing cooking and lighting facilities to houses as well as to the streets. This picture shows the height of the flood in either 1906 or 1916? The Senior Citizens Club now stands on the site. The Central Kindergarten and Echuca Primary School are also nearby.This postcard is significant because it shows the height of the floods before the town levee banks had been built. It also shows the need for flood proofing the town. It also shows the size of the gasworks in the early 20th Century. William Wilson Jamieson came to Warrnambool around 1857 after running a Ironmongers business in Hawthorne died . He opened his store in Liebig St which he operated until his death in 1882. He was quite active in the community serving on the town council for a number of years and also the Oddfellows Lodge and the Mechanics Institute. He came to Warrnambool in 1857, after running an Ironmonger's business in Hawthorn and having worked for the hardware company McEwan & Co. in Melbourne. He bought a weatherboard building that had previously been a 'bowling saloon' in Liebig Street and opened a business that Gardner describes as a general store and Turnbull describes as a drapery store. He was a member of the town council from 1862 to 1874 and from 1877 to 1880 and also served as mayor for two terms. He was also active in community organisations including the Mechanics institute and the Oddfellows This token is of great importance. It is significant for three reasons: 1. It is an example of an 1850s Australian token, demonstrating an early business practice in our history. 2. It is an example of a Warrnambool token produced by an important Warrnambool business (only two firms in Warrnambool produced tokens)A round copper token. The token was issued by: W.W. These items were hand sewn by Annie Beryl Mathieson, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Mathieson who lived at Naringal. The silk came from China, via family connections. This is a souvenir glass with an image of the Lower Lighthouse at Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool. This lighthouse is one of two first situated at Flagstaff Hill in 1871, with the lower light being placed on the top of an obelisk that had been erected at an earlier date. The two lighthouses still operate today on Flagstaff Hill. The glass has been sold as a tourist souvenir or as a memento for local people.This item is of minor interest as an example of a tourist souvenir of Warrnambool.This is a clear glass circular tumbler with a heavy base and an indented section near the base where the hand grasps the glass. This chair is believed to have come from the homestead of Dr. Daniel Curdie (1810-1884) who arrived in Australia in 1839. He established a property called Tandarook ten miles south of Camperdown. At first he combined farming with a medical practice as he was the only doctor in the coastal regions between Geelong and Portland. After 1850 he concentrated on farming and exploratory tours of the region. The chair may have been used for some or all of his ten children.This chair is of considerable significance firstly because of its rustic nature and age, being a hand made item and secondly because of its association with Dr. Daniel Curdie, one of the important pioneers of the Western District.This is a hand made wooden chair with two struts at the back and four struts supporting the legs. These ledgers contain the purchase details by various people in the Warrnambool region of items obtained from Thomas Patrick Hyland, a produce merchant and insurance agent with a business in Fairy Street, Warrnambool. One ledger dates from 1955 to 1960 and the other ledger dates from 1970 to 1978.These two ledgers are of interest as a example of a Warrnambool produce store business in the second half of the 20th Century and as a source of information on the purchasers, people living in the Warrnambool area at that time..1 A ledger with brown corded fabric cover, a metal spine with leather trimming and gold strips. Shows two bridge crossings over the Diamond Creek in Diamond Street, Eltham. The upper pedestrian crossing provided continual access for foot traffic during times of flood. The railway came to Eltham in 1901, the Eltham Railway Station is visible in the distance as well as a wooden bodied Tait (Red Rattler) First Class train carriage. The Tait train was first introduced in 1910 as a steam locomotive hauled carriage and in 1919 electric motor carriages were introduced however the line to Heidelberg was not electrified till 1921 and to Eltham in April 1923. The Railway General Store on Main Road is visible beyond the station and was built by Luther Haley in 1902. It was the first shop in the present day shopping centre. It was later known as lloyd's stopre (1917-1920) followed by a succession of six other owners until purchased by Eric Staff in 1939.
